Mumbai Indians played their first afternoon game at the Wankhede Stadium this season. It was a crucial clash against Lucknow Super Giants as both teams are pushing for a top-four finish. Thanks to a great start in the first innings, the hosts won the clash.
Batting first, the Mumbai Indians got a great start in the power play. Ryan Rickelton scored only his second half-century of the season and reached the milestone in only 25 balls. Even though Rohit Sharma was dismissed cheaply, the Super Giants’ bowlers were taken to the cleaners by Rickelton. The South African batter scored a great half-century before Suryakumar Yadav put on a show. The right-handed batter scored his third half-century of the season.
In the second innings, Mumbai Indians put on a great bowling performance. Barring Deepak Chahar and Karn Sharma, all the bowlers were right on the money. Jasprit Bumrah returned to his best as he picked up four wickets, including three that came in the 16th over. That over sealed the win for the hosts. Bumrah received a great deal of support from Boult, who picked up a wicket in each of his last three overs.
Will Jacks was named the player of the match for his all-around performance. With the bat in hand, the English batter scored 29 runs off 21 deliveries. However, it was his performance in the second innings that turned the game on its head. LSG had scored 60 runs in the power play with Nicholas Pooran going all guns blazing. Jacks came on to bowl the seventh over, and with his first ball, he dismissed Pooran. In the same over, the right-arm off-spinner dismissed Rishabh Pant.
Will Jacks, in the absence of Mitchell Santner, was the premier spinner for the Mumbai Indians. In the first innings, the Englishman scored 29 runs off 21 deliveries. He struck three fours and a solitary six in his innings. However, it was his bowling performance that earned him the player of the match award. The right-arm off-spinner dismissed Nicholas Pooran on the first ball of his spell before picking up Rishabh Pant’s wicket in the same over.
It is not often that Jasprit Bumrah does not light up the Wankhede Stadium in the IPL. He had been kept quiet in his first five games. However, today against the Super Giants, he brought his best at the crease in the second innings. Coming in as an impact sub, Bumrah broke the opening partnership in the power play, dismissing Aiden Markram in the third over. However, it was his death bowling that sealed the win for the hosts. He picked up three wickets in his third over, dismissing David Miller, Abdul Samad, and Avesh Khan in the 16th over. On a pitch where most bowlers went for a few runs, Bumrah was not only economical but also a great wicket-taker.
Trent Boult, at 35 years old, has redefined his bowling. The left-arm pacer was always lethal with the new ball all around the world. But his newfound success with the old ball has not only put him among the best bowlers but also given the Mumbai Indians a lethal death bowling pair of Boult and Jasprit Bumrah. Boult went for nine runs in his first over, but then bounced back in his next three overs. He picked up a wicket in each of those overs and paired up with Bumrah to seal a 54-run win for the hosts. He dismissed Mitchell Marsh and Ayush Badoni in the 12th and 15th overs, respectively, before nailing a yorker to end the match with Digvesh Rathi’s wicket.
Suryakumar Yadav has been on a consistent run of form. The right-handed batter is the only player in the season to have scored more than 25 runs in every game. Against the Super Giants today, Surya scored a crucial half-century. He reached the milestone in 27 balls, but unfortunately for him and the hosts, he was dismissed on the very next ball from Avesh Khan. In his 54-run knock, the 34-year-old hit four fours and sixes each.
Ryan Rickelton provided a great start to the hosts in the power play. The South African batter struck at a strike rate of more than 180 in his 32-ball knock. Even though Rohit Sharma, who had been in some good form heading into this clash, was dismissed cheaply, Rickelton took on the mantle of going big on himself. The left-handed batter scored 58 runs, hitting six fours and four sixes.
The Mumbai Indians put on a great show after being asked to bat first. In spite of Rohit Sharma being dismissed cheaply, his opening partner, Ryan Rickelton, returned to some form. The South African batter scored only his second half-century of the season. Suryakumar Yadav, coming into this match, had scored more than 25 in each game this season. The 34-year-old carried on with his consistent form and scored yet another fifty in the game. Suryakumar struck four fours and as many sixes in his 28-ball knock. Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch provided a great finishing touch to the innings. The two right-handed batters scored 45 runs in the 21 balls they faced in the middle.
For the Super Giants, Mayank Yadav, playing his first match of the season, picked up a couple of wickets. The right-arm pacer was pretty expensive but still clocked up some high speeds in his opening spell and mixed it up with some slower deliveries as well. Avesh Khan too picked up two wickets while the other three bowlers claimed a wicket each as well.
It was a great bowling performance from the hosts in spite of not starting on a great note with the ball in hand. Deepak Chahar, who bowls three overs in the power play for the five-time champions, was taken to the cleaners as he conceded 38 runs in his three overs. However, Jasprit Bumrah, for the first time, was given two overs in the power play, and he did not disappoint the home fans as he broke the opening partnership by dismissing Aiden Markram.
Nicholas Pooran, after failing in the last three games, seemed to have returned to some form and scored 27 runs in the power play itself. However, Will Jacks came on to bowl right after the power play and dismissed the left-handed batter with his first ball. In the same over, Jacks picked up Rishabh Pant’s wicket as well.
While a partnership was brewing between Ayush Badoni and Mitchell Marsh, Trent Boult carried on with his form with the older ball. He dismissed both Marsh and Badoni in the 12th and 15th overs, respectively. The left-arm pacer ended up with three wickets to his name.
But it was Jasprit Bumrah who was the main man for the hosts. After not being at his usual best in the last few games, Bumrah picked up four wickets. He nailed the yorkers in the death over stage and picked up three wickets in the 16th over.
