Mumbai Indians hosted Sunrisers Hyderabad in a high-octane clash at the Wankhede Stadium. The five-time champions won their second game on the trot.
Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to an unusual start. Even though the two opening batters survived the power play, SRH could only score 46 runs in the first six overs. The MI bowlers were right on the money in the first innings. Not only did they bowl with accurate lines and length, but they mixed up their speeds as well. It proved to be difficult for the SRH batters to score off slower deliveries, and they were restricted to a score of only 162 runs. Will Jacks picked up a couple of wickets and received a great deal of support from the MI pacers as well.
In the second innings, Jacks, after impressing with the ball in hand, stepped up. The English batter scored 36 runs to seal the win for the hosts. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton started the chase off on a great note. The former MI skipper too looked in great touch but was once again dismissed in the power play. Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya also played some handy knocks.
Will Jacks was named the player of the match for his splendid all-round performance. The English cricketer picked up two wickets in the first innings before he came back to some form with the bat in hand in the second innings. He took crucial wickets in the first innings, dismissing Travis Head and Ishan Kishan.
With the bat in hand, Jacks came to the crease when the Mumbai Indians were already on top of their opponents. Chasing a target of 163 runs at Wankhede Stadium, where dew plays a huge role in the second innings, Jacks sealed the win for the hosts with a 36-run knock.
Will Jacks bowled with a great amount of control after he was tasked to act as the fifth bowler. Karn Sharma, after being named the player of the match in the previous game, was injured inside the powerplay and had to walk off. Jacks came into the attack with the top-order of SRH featuring three left-handed batters. The match-up worked in the favor of the English spinner as he dismissed Travis Head and Ishan Kishan to put on a choke on the visitors.
In the second innings, Jacks returned to some form with the bat in hand as well. The English batter scored 36 runs off 26 balls. He struck three fours and a couple of sixes to seal a tricky chase for the hosts.
Pat Cummins was the lone performer with the ball in hand for the Orange Army. The SRH skipper picked up three wickets, but it was always going to be tricky for the visitors once their batters failed in the first innings. He dismissed the top order of the hosts and accounted for the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Will Jacks, and Suryakumar Yadav.
It was a snoozefest in the first innings as the orange army in spite of not losing a single wicket in the powerplay, batted slowly. Multiple batters played at a below-par strike rate. Nitish Kumar Reddy, for instance, batted 21 balls but scored only 19 runs. Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order top-scored with 40 runs off 28 balls. Heinrich Klaasen, down the order, played a cameo along with Aniket Verma. But the slowness of the track did not allow the visitors to attack and make use of the small boundaries.
With the ball in hand, Will Jacks was the pick among the bowlers. The English off-spinner picked up a couple of wickets in the absence of lead spinner Karn Sharma. The pacers too chipped in with a wicket each and bowled with great accuracy to restrict the visitors to a below-par score.
Barring the last few deliveries, the Mumbai Indians completely dominated the proceedings in the second innings. Will Jacks, after performing with the ball in hand in the first innings, was the star performer with the bat as well. While he did not score a big knock, Jacks made 36 runs in only 26 balls, which was enough to set up the win for the hosts. Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, and skipper Hardik Pandya also performed with the bat with some crucial knocks.
For the Sunrisers, Pat Cummins was the pick among the bowlers. The SRH skipper picked up three wickets but did not receive much support from the opposite end as the visitors were on the receiving end of a four-wicket defeat.
