Josh Hazlewood was named the player of the match for his incredible bowling performance. Even though Yashasvi Jaiswal took him to the cleaners in his first 10 balls, the veteran pacer was the point of difference between the two teams. While his first 10 balls went for 26 runs, Hazlewood gave away only seven runs in his next 14 deliveries while also picking up four wickets. He dismissed Jaiswal, Shimron Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel, and Jofra Archer.
Josh Hazlewood's spell could be easily broken down into two parts. The Australian pacer conceded 26 runs in his first 10 balls. But he staged a strong comeback after that. Hazlewood dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal on the very next delivery in the final over of the power play. He came back to bowl in the death, where he was once again brilliant. The right-arm pacer dismissed Shimron Hetmyer in the 17th over to put RCB on top of their opponents. Meanwhile, the 18th over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar went for 22 runs, and it meant that the hosts were defending only 18 runs off the last two overs.
Hazlewood once again came to bowl the all-important 19th over. He picked up two wickets and dismissed the dangerous-looking Dhruv Jurel and Jofra Archer on successive balls. But what made his over even more incredible was that he gave away only one run in six balls.
Virat Kohli struck his third fifty in a row as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru were sent into bat at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. While Kohli had been all class away from home, he had struggled in the three games so far in Bengaluru. However, he broke the shackles tonight with a brilliant half-century. The opening batter scored 70 runs in only 42 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes. He struck at a healthy rate of 166.67 against some poor bowling by the visitors.
Devdutt Padikkal has been the comeback story of the season. The left-handed batter was often criticised for his strike rate before IPL 2025. However, he put all the doubts to bed in the season and played out another hard-hitting knock. He came into bat right after the power play and took some time to settle into his knock. He had scored only 10 runs in his first 10 balls but quickly switched between gears. In his next 16 balls, the 24-year-old scored 40 runs and reached his second fifty of the season. He smashed four fours and three sixes in his knock while striking at a rate of more than 185.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, even though he missed out on his fifth half-century of the season, still made a huge impact in the game. The left-handed batter took the RCB bowlers to the cleaners in the power play. The 23-year-old batter scored 49 runs in only 19 balls, hitting seven fours and three sixes. He scored 26 runs off the 10 balls he faced from Josh Hazlewood but was dismissed against the same bowler.
Unlike their three losses at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB batters played cautiously instead of going extra hard and losing wickets in the process. Phil Salt and Virat Kohli played almost without any risks and still scored 59 runs in the power play without losing any wickets. Even though Salt was dismissed in the seventh over, the hosts carried on with their careful approach while the rate of scoring still remained healthy. Devdutt Padikkal joined Kohli at the crease. The two batters took their time initially after the power play but changed gears quickly once they got their eye in.
Padikkal, after making only 10 runs off his first balls, quickly increased his strike rate and smashed 40 runs in the next 16 balls before being dismissed. Kohli too batted with a strike rate that was better than his career rate. He scored 70 runs in only 42 balls, hitting eight fours and a couple of sixes.
For the Royals, they made a mini comeback in the game in the 16th and 17th over. Jofra Archer dismissed Kohli first with a slow off-cutter. Sandeep Sharma, in the next over, picked up two wickets, including Devdutt Padikkal. With both set batters back in the dressing room, it was a moment for the visitors to stage a comeback, but a late flourish from Tim David and Jitesh Sharma allowed the hosts to get back some momentum.
In the second innings, it once again looked like the Royal Challengers Bengaluru would go on to register their fourth loss at home. In the first 10 overs, it was the Rajasthan Royals who had the major say in the innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi gave the Royals a great start. Jaiswal scored 49 runs in only 19 balls in the power play. Even with his dismissal, the rate of scoring still remained pretty high. The RR skipper scored 22 runs in only 10 balls, but it was his wicket that brought the hosts back into the game. Dhruv Jurel also played a crucial knock at the end of the innings, but the Royals still came short by 11 runs.
For the RCB bowlers, it was a great second half. Josh Hazlewood was the pick among the bowlers, having picked up a four-wicket haul. Krunal Pandya, along with Suyash Sharma, bowled economically and brought their team into the clash. While Pandya picked up two wickets, including one of Riyan Parag, Suyash remained wicketless. Hazlewood’s 19th over was the game changer. RR needed 18 runs in 12 balls, but the Australian pacer picked up two wickets and gave only a single.
