India defeats New Zealand by four wickets with six balls to spare.
India will be lifting their third Champions Trophy and second ICC trophy in as many years. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja got the Indian team over the line. Rahul scored 34 runs, which were as valuable as any other century he has scored in international cricket.
India is at 240/5 after 47 overs. Need 12 runs in 18 balls to win. Rahul: 29* (29), Pandya: 18* (16)
Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have been with each other in some of the most famous and infamous moments in their life. Everyone remembers their controversial appearance on the popular talk show Koffee with Karan. However, what they have done today is nothing short of a spectacular win.
India is at 220/5 after 45 overs. Need 32 runs in 30 balls to win. Rahul: 23* (23), Pandya: 6* (10)
The game is hanging in the balance after the completion of 45 overs. KL Rahul has upped his strike rate and is pulling the game into India’s grip. New Zealand will be missing the services of Matt Henry as they head into the death overs.
India is at 206/5 after 43 overs. Need 46 runs in 42 balls to win. Rahul: 14* (17), Pandya: 1* (4)
Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell have tightened the screws on the Indian batting lineup. The two off-spinners bowled economically and put New Zealand in the driving seat of the match. In their 20 overs, Santner and Bracewell picked up four wickets and conceded only 74 runs.
India is at 203/5 after 42 overs. Need 49 runs in 48 balls to win. Rahul: 13* (12)
Axar Patel tries to up the ante and looks for the glory shot. Facing Michael Bracewell, he looks to take on the off-spinner and attempts a loft over long-on. Bracewell has ended arguably his best spell of the tournament. In his 10 overs, the Kiwi spinner picked up two wickets and conceded only 28 runs.
India is at 190/4 after 39 overs. Need 62 runs in 66 balls to win. Axar: 28* (36), Rahul: 1* (1)
After playing a great knock for 48 runs, Iyer was dismissed by Kiwi skipper, Mitchell Santner. He was looking to clear the fine-leg fielder, Rachin Ravindra, who was inside the 30-yard circle. However, a miss-hit resulted in him hitting the ball straight to Ravindra.
India is at 183/3 after 38 overs. Need 69 runs in 72 balls to win. Iyer: 48* (58), Axar: 22* (35)
Shreyas Iyer broke the shackles with a humungous six, but what happened on the next ball would probably be the talking point of the match. The right-handed batter was looking to clear the boundary once again but smashed it straight to Kyle Jamieson. Jamieson got himself into a great position to complete the catch but ended up spilling a dolly.
India is at 166/3 after 33 overs. Need 86 runs in 14 overs to win. Iyer: 38* (52), Axar: 15* (29)
Pacer, Will O’Rourke comes back into the attack as the Michael Bracewell is taken off the attack. The tall pacer is probably here to exploit Shreyas Iyer’s short ball issues.
India is at 154/3 after 33 overs. Need 98 runs in 17 overs to win. Iyer: 31* (42), Axar: 10* (21)
Pressure is getting to both teams, and the final match is living up to expectations. The two teams have not given anything away in the game. Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel have shared a stand that has stopped the falling wickets. However, their job is far from over. The duo needs to bat sensibly and continue to rotate the strike and attempt to punish the bad balls to find boundaries. For New Zealand, it is only a matter of picking wickets. The deep Indian batting lineup could take the game away in the final 10 overs if they keep wickets in hand.
India is at 128/3 after 28 overs. Need 130 runs in 22 overs to win. Iyer: 15* (28), Axar: 0* (5)
The Indian middle order has its task cut out if they have to chase down this total. The top-three batters have been sent back to the pavilion in quick succession. They have slipped from 105/0 to 122/3, and it all started with a super-human catch from Phillips. Axar and Shreyas would need to bat out of their skin to win the match.
India is at 122/3 after 25.1 overs. Need 130 runs in 24.5 overs to win. Iyer: 9* (22)
Michael Bracewell bowls a maiden over to strengthen New Zealand’s hold over the game. Shreyas Iyer is finding it pretty difficult to rotate the strike. Rohit is facing far too few balls, and it has accounted for his wicket. Rachin Ravindra dismissed the Indian skipper.
India is at 122/2 after 25 overs. Need 130 runs in 25 overs to win. Rohit: 76* (82), Iyer: 9* (16)
A couple of quick wickets have put India in the backseat. Even though skipper Rohit Sharma is still present at the crease, things have started to look bleak for the Men in Blue. They have been pushed to the first gear.
India is at 106/2 after 19.1 overs. Need 146 runs in 30.5 overs to win. Rohit: 69* (63)
GLENN PHILLIPS HAS DONE IT ONCE AGAIN!!! Superman has completed an outrageous catch to dismiss Shubman Gill. Virat Kohli, who came to the crease, could only manage to score a single and was dismissed on his second ball. He took a review with himself as well.
Can captain Sharma steer his team to victory?
India is at 103/0 after 18 overs. Need 149 runs in 32 overs to win. Rohit: 69* (62), Gill: 29* (46)
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill shared a 100-run opening stand to put the game to bed. The duo have batted positively and played risk-free cricket. They have ensured that the Men in Blue do not suffer any early setbacks.
India is at 93/0 after 15 overs. Need 159 runs in 35 overs to win. Rohit: 64* (54), Gill: 23* (34)
The Indian opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have put India in firm control of the match. Chasing a tricky score of 252 runs, both the batters have played positively and have seldom taken any risks.
India is at 65/0 after 10.1 overs. Need 187 runs in 39.5 overs to win. Rohit: 50* (41), Gill: 10* (20)
It seems like Rohit Sharma has found his bat from the 2023 ODI World Cup. He is playing a knock in Dubai, which was pretty usual in the 2023 tournament. He has raced to his fifty in 41 balls. But the fans would like him to go on to make a triple-digit score, maybe for one last time?
India is at 51/0 after 7.2 overs. Need 201 runs in 42.4 overs to win. Rohit: 39* (31), Gill: 7* (13)
Rohit Sharma is looking in great touch, and it seems like he is in the mood to finish things off quickly. He has quickly raced to 30 runs. Amidst his hitting, Gill is also looking to build his innings.
India is at 30/0 after 4 overs. Need 222 runs in 46 overs to win. Rohit: 20* (16), Gill: 5* (8)
Rohit and Gill batted splendidly and according to the situation in the first four overs. The two batters could take the game away from New Zealand if not dismissed quickly.
India is at 22/0 after 2 overs. Need 230 runs in 48 overs to win. Rohit: 18* (11), Gill: 0* (1)
Will O’Rourke, sharing the new ball in the absence of Matt Henry, started his spell waywardly. He sent down two wides before being flicked for a four by the Indian skipper. He bowled a 13-run over to start his spell.
India is at 9/0 after 1 over. Need 243 runs in 49 overs to win. Rohit: 8* (6), Gill: 0* (0)
Rohit Sharma is the least bothered by a huge final. With speculations on the internet saying it could be the last for the Indian skipper, he nonchalantly opens his account with a sixer against Kyle Jamieson.
New Zealand scored 251/7 after 50 overs. Bracewell: 53* (40)
New Zealand batted out their 50 overs even though at one point it looked unlikely that they would do so. The Blackcaps have given the Indian team a target of 252 runs. They would need to score at a run rate of 5.04 to win their third Champions Trophy.
New Zealand is at 211/6 after 45.4 overs. Bracewell: 24* (25)
Shami gets the sixth wicket of the innings and accounts for Darryl Mitchell. The right-handed batter scored 63 runs in 101 balls but has given the Kiwis a slight chance of defending a decent total. Mitchell departs right at the time of acceleration.
New Zealand is at 201/5 after 45 overs. Mitchell: 53* (97), Bracewell: 24* (25)
Chakravarthy, batling a hit to the shin off his own bowling, has bowled out his 10 overs for the day. The mystery ends with the figures of 2/45. He walks off the field and is replaced by Washington Sundar.
New Zealand is at 184/5 after 43 overs. Mitchell: 50* (93), Bracewell: 11* (17)
Michael Bracewell finds the boundary rope with a sweep against Kuldeep Yadav. The Blackcaps would like him to continue hitting these fours and sixes and would hope that Mitchell joins him too.
New Zealand is at 178/5 after 42 overs. Mitchell: 50* (91), Bracewell: 6* (13)
Darryl Mitchell has played a pretty slow knock today. However, he has gotten New Zealand to a respectable total. The right-handed batter has reached his half-century in 91 balls. It could very well be the slowest fifty of his career. He is known to be a demolisher in the middle-order but has been completely choked by the Indian spinners today.
New Zealand is at 165/5 after 38 overs. Mitchell: 44* (79)
New Zealand’s ship sinks even further as Glenn Phillips makes the long, dreadful walk back to the pavilion. Chakravarthy continues his love affair against New Zealand and gets his second wicket of the match.
New Zealand is at 156/4 after 36 overs. Mitchell: 41* (76), Phillips: 28* (44)
Shubman Gill had the chance to end the fifth wicket stand, but he put down a tough chance deep in the field off Jadeja’s bowling. You would expect to take these chances, especially at this level.
New Zealand is at 149/4 after 34 overs. Mitchell: 37* (68), Phillips: 25* (40)
New Zealand has found some relief with the batting pair of Mitchell and Phillips at the crease. Rohit Sharma would be looking over his shoulders to find another wicket-taking option among his six bowlers.
Shami could be given a short burst, and maybe he could provide the partnership-breaking wicket like he did against Australia in the semi-final. Another wicket would make India the firm favorites.
New Zealand is at 135/4 after 30 overs. Mitchell: 32* (59), Phillips: 17* (25)
Phillips puts New Zealand’s innings into a higher gear with a couple of boundaries against Kuldeep. These would not hurt India, given the stronghold they have over the game. Rohit is a dynamic skipper and could very well replace Kuldeep with another spinner.
How soon will Chakravarthy come into the attack? Or will Shami be given a short burst?
New Zealand is at 126/4 after 28 overs. Mitchell: 28* (53), Phillips: 12* (19)
FINALLY!!! The New Zealand batters have found the highly-awaited boundary. Glenn Phillips strikes a six against Kuldeep. It is their first boundary since 81 deliveries.
Could this be the change in momentum that New Zealand desperately needs?
New Zealand is at 108/4 after 23.2 overs. Mitchell: 22* (44)
Latham does not survive again. He is trapped LBW by Ravindra Jadeja, however, he challenges the on-field call. It’s three reds on the ball-tracker as New Zealand lose their fourth wicket and a review as well.
New Zealand is at 104/3 after 22 overs. Mitchell: 18* (38), Latham: 14* (28)
India’s mystery man, Varun Chakravarthy, is back in the attack to tighten the choke they have over the New Zealand batters. The two batters are looking clueless on how to attack the spinners. They need to get a move on to help the Blackcaps put up a fighting total. India loses their first review of the game. Latham survives an LBW shout against Jadeja in the 22nd over.
New Zealand is at 101/3 after 20 overs. Mitchell: 17* (34), Latham: 12* (20)
It has been more than six overs since the Kiwi batters have struck a boundary. These two batters would have to do something out of the box to unsettle the Indian spinners.
New Zealand is at 95/3 after 18 overs. Mitchell: 15* (31), Latham: 7* (10)
Ravindra Jadeja is yet to come to the attack. He is the most experienced spinner in the team and would be a crucial bowler when he comes into the attack. With two right-handers at the crease, Rohit would be tempted to give Kuldeep a break and get Jadeja into the scheme of things.
New Zealand is at 85/3 after 16.1 overs. Mitchell: 10* (25), Latham: 4* (6)
Kuldeep’s timely strikes have put India in the driver's seat. The left-arm chinaman has dismissed the two centurions from the previous game. Both Williamson and Ravindra were the danger men for the Indian bowling.
Will the rest of the New Zealand batters lead a comeback? Or will India dismantle the Kiwis?
New Zealand is at 75/3 after 12.2 overs. Mitchell: 3* (8)
Kuldeep saves his best for the final. In his second over he gets former Kiwi skipper, Kane Williamson.
New Zealand is at 75/2 after 12 overs. Williamson: 11* (12), Mitchell: 3* (8)
Axar Patel comes into the attack with two right-handers on the crease. Exceptional thinking from Rohit Sharma, taking the matchup into account.
New Zealand is at 73/2 after 11 overs. Williamson: 10* (10)
Kuldeep Yadav is one of the best bowlers. But when he comes up against the left-hander batters, the spinner is almost unplayable. With his first ball in the game, Kuldeep has accounted for Rachin’s wicket.
New Zealand is at 57/1 after 7.5 overs. Ravindra: 34* (24)
Varun Chakravarthy continues to be a mystery for the Kiwi batters. The spinner had struck with his seventh ball in the innings as Ravindra was given out by the on-field umpire. The left-hander reviewed immediately and got saved. On the very next ball, he tried to slog Chakravarthy and was once again saved by a catch from one of the safest Indian fielders, Shreyas Iyer. However, he made a strong comeback in the over and dismissed Will Young to cap off a successful over.
New Zealand is at 69/1 after 10 overs. Ravindra: 37* (28), Williamson: 9* (9)
The fall of Will Young’s wicket has brought Kane Williamson to the crease. He joins Rachin Ravindra, who has been given a lifeline by Shreyas Iyer. Rohit Sharma and the Indian bowlers would know that these two could be the dangerous pair. Both Ravindra and Williamson had scored centuries in the semi-final against South Africa.
New Zealand slightly ahead at the moment but a wicket or two could pull things back for India How soon will Kuldeep Yadav come in the attack?
New Zealand is at 37/0 after 5 overs. Young: 10* (16), Ravindra: 25* (14)
After Hardik conceded 16 runs in the fourth over, Shami too has started to go for runs. The big question that arises now is how soon Rohit Sharma will introduce his spinners into the attack. He brought Kuldeep into the attack in the sixth over in the semi-final clash against Australia.
New Zealand is at 47/0 after 6.3 overs. Young: 11* (18), Ravindra: 29* (21)
HAS SHAMI DROPPED THE CHAMPIONS TROPHY???
The right-arm pacer was given a chance to dismiss Rachin Ravindra. However, he dropped a return catch off his own bowling. It was similar to the one he dropped of Travis Head in the semi-final.
New Zealand is at 10/0 after 3 overs. Young: 7* (10), Ravindra: 2* (8)
New Zealand begins the first innings with a cautious approach. The Indian pace bowlers, Shami and Pandya, too, have been right on the money, bowling with tight lines and lengths. Given the strength of the Indian spin bowling attack, you would think that the Kiwis must attack in the initial overs when the ball is still new and hard.
New Zealand is at 26/0 after 4 overs. Young: 8* (13), Ravindra: 16* (11)
Ravindra breaks the shackles for New Zealand with a six and a four against Hardik Pandya. Looks like he is ready to avenge his low score against India from the previous week. Pandya accounted for his dismissal in the previous game, and he has been put under the heat by the left-hander. The over goes for 16 runs as Ravindra ends the over with a boundary.
Mohammed Shami looks in his groove and has started brilliantly in the final. He starts with a four-run over. The right arm pacer had bowled five dots to start the over before being hit for a boundary by Will Young.
The two teams are lined up for the national anthems. Kiwi openers, Rachin Ravindra and Will Young, are padded up and will be opening the innings. Mohammed Shami along with Hardik Pandya will share the new ball before the all-important Indian spin attack gets into the game.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy
