Big players step up when it matters the most, and former Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson added another glorious century to his already illustrious career by smashing South African bowlers for 102 runs in just 102 deliveries. With a strike rate of 108.51 runs, Williamson's 164 run stand with Rachin Ravindra helped New Zealand set up 363 for South Africa to chase.
South Africa were always playing the catch up game in the second innings but David Miller stood out with his quickfire knock of 100 runs in 67 balls. A target of 363 was always going to be an uphill battle for the South African batters but for a brief moment, Van der Dussen’s innings alongside Temba Bavuma made the Proteas believe. Chasing a mammoth total of 363, South Africa already had their work cut out. But despite the odds, the Proteas top order gave a strong fight back to the Kiwi bowlers and found themselves 125/1 inside 22 overs.
The platform was set for South Africa to pull off the improbable but New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner stepped up to break a crucial partnership between Rassie Van Der Dussen and Temba Bavuma when he sent the Proteas skipper packing in the 23rd over.
