Chennai Super Kings, captain- Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ahead of the mega auction at Jeddah, CSK had retained five players. They retained Ruturaj Gaikwad the captain of the ship for the highest price at Rs 18 crore, retained Shivam Dube for Rs 12 crore, retained Ravindra Jadeja again for Rs 18 crore, also they retained Matheesha Pathirana the overseas fast bowler from Sri Lanka for Rs 13 crore and finally they retained their biggest star MS Dhoni for Rs 4 crore as an uncapped player. Therefore going into the mega auction CSK had a total purse of Rs 55 crore and they had the option of one Right to Match card at the auction. Going into the auction, there was talks about CSK going for Rishabh Pant as a successor of MS Dhoni but this didn’t happen. Instead CSK went for Rachin Ravindra and got him for 4 crore and CSK went for trusted opening batter and overseas wicketkeeper in Devon Conway and got him for 6.25 crore. One of the talking point after the auction was R. Ashwin returned to his home team after CSK got him for Rs 9.75 crore. At the end CSK got what they wanted but given the T20 dynamics and competitiveness nowadays, CSK could have gone for an explosive batter.

Ahead of the mega auction the talking point was whether MI will retain Rohit Sharma or not after what has transpired last year. But all these were speculation as MI retained the Mumbaikar Rohit Sharma for Rs 16.30 crore. MI had retained their star core players. Captain Hardik Pandya was retained for Rs 16.35 crore, prime bowler Jasprit Bumrah was retained for Rs 18 crore, star batsman Suryakumar Yadav was retained for Rs 16.35 crore and Tilak Verma was retained for Rs 8 crore as an uncapped player. Going into the auction MI had a total purse of Rs 45 crore. In the auction MI had some smart buys. They bought back the experienced left arm New Zealander Trent Boult for Rs 12.5 crore. Bumrah and Boult will be a deadly combination for MI. MI have also got Deepak Chahar for Rs 9.25 crore. They bought the explosive England batsman Will Jacks for just Rs 5.25 crore. MI have also got the experienced New Zealand spinner for a cheap amount of Rs 2 crore. Overall,the squad looks balanced.

Kolkata Knight Riders, captain- Ajinkya Rahane

Ahead of the mega auction KKR had retained six players. Surprisingly they let go the winning captain Shreyas Iyer, the explosive England opener Phil Salt, the Aussie pacer Mitchell Starc. Instead they trusted the two West Indian Sunil Narine and Andre Russell and retained them for Rs 12 crores respectively. They have also shown faith in Rinku Singh as he was retained for Rs 13 crore. Varun Chakravarthy was retained for Rs 12 crore. And KKR had retained Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh for 4 crores respectively as the uncapped players. Going into the auction, KKR had Rs 51 crore in their total purse. KKR had a terrible performance at the auction. They bought back Venkatesh Iyer for a whopping amount of Rs 23.74 crore and raised many eyebrows. They got Quinton De Kock for Rs 3.6 crore. But De Kock is past his prime, and he has retired from International cricket. After going unsold in the first round of the auction, experienced batsman Ajinkya Rahane was bought by KKR for Rs 1.50 Cr. Later on he was announced as the captain of the team.

Ahead of the mega auction, RCB has retained three players. Star Batsman Virat Kohli was retained for Rs 21 crore, Rajat Patidar was retained for Rs 11 crore and Yash Dayal was retained for Rs 5 crore. RCB had a total amount of Rs 83 Crore going into the mega auction. In the auction RCB had some smart buys. They bought Phil Salt, Tim David and Liam Livingstone. They have also bought the experienced swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Rajasthan Royals, captain- Sanju Samson

Ahead of the auction, there was a major talking point whether Rajasthan Royals will retain the likes of Jos Buttler and Yuzi Chahal or not. Surprisingly they released both of them. RR have retained Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson for Rs 18 crores respectively. They retained young Indian batters Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel for 14 crores respectively. They retained Shimron Hetmyer for Rs 11 crore and Sandeep Sharma for Rs 4 crore as the uncapped player. Rajasthan had a total amount of Rs 41 crore going into the auction. Like KKR, RR too didn't have a good auction. They bought players like Nitish Rana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Jofra Archer and Tushar Deshpande who are not proven match winners yet.

Lucknow Super Giants were in the headlines before the auction as they released KL Rahul, their captain. Lucknow retained five players. Nicholas Pooran for Rs 11 crores, Ravi Bishnoi for Rs 11 crores, Mayank Yadav for Rs 11 crore and Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan for Rs 4 crores respectively as the uncapped players. In the auction, Rishabh Pant was the headline as he was the most expensive player bought  in the entire IPL history. He was bought for Rs 27 Crore.

Ahead of the auction, Delhi Capitals have retained Axar Patel for Rs 16.50 crore, Kuldeep Yadav for Rs 13.25 crore, Tristan Stubbs for Rs 10 crore and Rs 4 crore for Abhishek Porel as the uncapped player. Delhi Capitals had Rs 73 crore purse remaining going into the auction. Delhi have bought some great players. They bought the likes of KL Rahul, Faf Du Plessis, Mitchell Starc and Mohit Sharma.

Last year’s runner up Sunrisers Hyderabad retained their top players who performed last year. Sunrisers have retained explosive South African batsman Heinrich Klaasen for a whopping Rs 23 Crore, retained the skipper Pat Cummins for Rs 18 crore, Abhishek Sharma for Rs 14 crore, Travis Head for Rs 14 crore and Nitish Reddy for Rs 6 crore. Sunrisers had a total purse of Rs 45 crore going into the auction. In the auction SRH has made some decent Indian buys like Ishan Kishan, Mohammad Shami and Rahul Chahar.

Ahead of the mega auction, Punjab Kings have only retained two players. Shashank Singh for Rs 5.5 crore and local Punjab player Prabhsimran Singh for Rs 4 crore as the uncapped player. Therefore Punjab has the most amount of money of Rs 110.15 crore in the purse. They have bought some fine players like Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzi Chahal, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Lockie Ferguson.

Ahead of the mega auction, Gujarat Titans have retained Rashid Khan for Rs 18 Crore, captain Subhman Gill for Rs 16.50 crore, Sai Sudharsan for Rs 8.50 crore and Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan for 4 crores respectively as the uncapped players. GT had left a total purse of Rs 69 crore going into the auction. In the auction, GT bought the dynamic Jos Buttler for Rs 15.75 crore. Apart from Buttler GT got Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Overall the squad looks balanced and well settled.
