Tamil Nadu Premier League History and Foundation

The TNPL was launched in the year 2016 and its primary objective was to promote local talents of Tamil Nadu and increase the cricketing ecosystem beyond big cities like Chennai. The inaugural season had eight teams with names after prominent Tamil Nadu cities. The teams were named after Tuti, Chepauk, Dindigul, Karaikudi, Madurai, Lyca Kovai, Kanchi and Trichy. 

The Tuti Patriots won the first edition of the TNPL season in the year 2016. But after that the Chepauk Super Gillies have established themselves as the most successful team in the tournament winning the title multiple times. Chepauk Super Gillies won its first title in the year 2017, then in 2019 and in 2021. The 2022 edition of the TNPL was shared.

The competition is extremely competitive and it has discovered talents like Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Sai Sudharsan and R Sai Kishore. Each of these players are prominent stars for their respective IPL franchises and few of them are playing for India too. The TNPL has grown some great talents from the grassroot level and continues to give the local talents of the state a greater platform to showcase their abilities.

Tamil Nadu Premier League Current Format

In the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2025, there are eight teams participating. Chepauk Super Gillies, Dindigul Dragons, Lyca Kovai Kings, Salem Spartans, Nellai Royal Kings, Seichem Madurai Panthers, IDdream Tiruppur Tamizhans and Trichy Grand Cholas. 
In total there are 32 league games which are played in the TNPL where all the eight teams will face each other once in a round robin format. Then at the end of the league stage, the top four teams will play in the playoffs. The 9th edition of the TNPL will be played across four venues in SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore, SCF Cricket Ground, Salem, Indian Cement Company Ground and NPR College Ground in Dindigul. 

Tamil Nadu Premier League Team Owners and Sponsors 

The first team is Salem Spartans who first became a part of TNPL in the year 2019. Initially the team was called Tuti Patriots and then with the change of ownership in 2019 the team was renamed to Salem Spartans. M. Selvakumar who owned the Vivo Chennai South Distributor is the owner of this franchise where the company spent Rs 5.21 crore and acquired the final rights of the franchise. The Salem district of Tamil Nadu is being represented by Salem Spartans. 
In the year 2022, Murugan Ashwin was the captain of Salem Spartans. In the year 2016, the Spartans won the inaugural season of the league as the then Tuti Patriots under the leadership of the veteran India player Dinesh Karthik. The second team is Chepauk Super Gillies which is the most successful team in the TNPL as they have won four titles. 
The owner of this franchise is B.Sivanthi Adityan who is the President of Metronation Chennai Television Private Limited. The company purchased the franchise for Rs 5.21 crore in the year 2016. The third team is Lyca Kovai Kings where one of the most famous film production houses, Lyca Productions bought the franchise in the year 2016 for Rs 5.01 crore. The chairman of the Lyca Productions is Subaskaran Allirajah. Allirajah also has a franchise in the Sri Lanka Premier League.

Tamil Nadu Premier League Teams Brand Value and Revenue

Tamil Nadu Premier League has been seen as a great platform for young talents across Tamil Nadu to showcase their talents. Each team in the TNPL is built with their own dynamics and strategies. Salem Spartans has a brand value of Rs 5.21 crores approximately whereas Chepauk Super Gillies has the brand value of Rs 5.13 crores approximately. FOMO7 has been announced as the Front-Jersey Sponsor for Trichy Grand Cholas whereas BTZO is the lead arm sponsor for Siechem Madurai Panthers.

Tamil Nadu Premier League Rules and Variations 

Just like the rules and regulations of the other leagues, the TNPL also has the same procedure in the league. It's just that the TNPL does not have any overseas players. All the local and international stars from Tamil Nadu can only participate in the TNPL. As far as the rules are concerned, each team plays one innings which is limited to 20 overs. (120 deliveries). As it is a T20 match, generally it lasts around 3 hours and each innings is being restricted to 90 minutes including the timeouts as well. 
Also like all the leagues in T20s, there are powerplays which apply in the first six overs and allow only two fielders outside the 30-yard circle and then after the powerplay, five fielders are allowed. In TNPL too, each bowler can bowl a maximum of 4 overs.
While wides incur an additional run and a ball, free hits incurs extra runs, ball and a licence to bat to hit without the fear of getting out. In the TNPL too, slow over-rate penalties are applied where captains are fined and teams can get penalties in the fielding positions if they fail to start the 20th over on time. 

Tamil Nadu Premier League Tournament Seasons and Results (Till Now)

In the inaugural season of the TNPL in 2016, Tuti Patriots had defeated the Chepauk Super Gillies by 122 runs in the final after posting a huge total of 215/2. Chepauk Super Gillies is the most successful team in the TNPL after winning the TNPL thrice and even as a joint winner in the year 2022. 
Chepauk has won the title in 2017, 2019, 2021 and as a joint winner with Kovai Kings in 2023. In the year 2018, Seichem Madurai Panthers won the title for the first time beating Dindigul Dragons. And Dindigul Dragons are the defending champions as they won the TNPL in 2024.

Most Wickets 

Tamil Nadu Premier League has been played from the year 2016. As far as the most runs in each season is concerned, in the inaugural season of 2016 N Jagadeesan was the highest runs scorer with 397 runs. In the year 2017, all-rounder Washington Sundar was the leading runs scorer with 459 runs. In the year 2018, Arun Karthik was the highest runs scorer with 472 runs. 
On the other hand, Antony Dhas was the highest wicket taker in the year 2016 with 14 wickets. And M Poiyamozhi was the highest wicket taker in 2024 with 16 wickets.

Tamil Nadu League Mega Auction: Top Buys List

In the Tamil Nadu Premier League mega auction in 2025, Mohammed M of the Salem Spartans is the most expensive player with Rs 18.4 lakhs. Chepauk Super Gillies have bought Vijay Shankar for Rs 18 Lakh. Trichy Grand Cholans has bought two players Mukliesh U and Suresh Kumar J for Rs 17.6 Lakh and Rs 16.1 Lakh respectively.
