Maharashtra Premier League History and Foundation

The Maharashtra Premier League was launched in the year 2009 by the Maharashtra Cricket Association( MCA) to basically promote the upcoming cricket talents of Maharashtra and it took inspiration from the IPL in that time. The initial years of the MPL season featured teams representing various regions and cities within the state of Maharashtra which includes Nashik, Kolhapur, Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad.

The Raigad Royals won the inaugural season in 2009. The league was created  keeping in mind for the local players so that they can showcase their abilities because many of the local cricketers don’t get the opportunity at the national level. The start of the MPL was really good but it really couldn’t sustain due to financial and operational challenges leading to a stoppage after the 2009 season. But in the year 2023, the Maharashtra Cricket Association brought life to the league with a good amount of energy and modern approach bringing in top broadcasting standards, talent development frameworks and a bit of digital involvement like we see in the IPL nowadays.

The refurbished MPL saw more engagements from sponsors, increasing media coverage and focused commitment to local talents of Maharashtra. And now, the Maharashtra Premier League will start the 2025 season from tomorrow with a better platform which can bridge the gap between the state level and national level opportunities.

Maharashtra Premier League Current Format

The Maharashtra Premier League will start from June 4, 2025 and the Ratnagiri Jets will play against the Eagle Nashik Titans in the first match of the tournament. This will be the sixth edition of the MPL. The final match of the Maharashtra Premier League will be played on 22nd June. Each and every match will be played at the MCA International Stadium in Pune. There are six teams participating in the Maharashtra Premier League.

The six teams are Raigad Royals, Nashik Titans, Satara Warriors, Puneri Bappa, Ratnagiri Jets and PBG Kolhapur Tuskers. This is a double round robin format where each team will play against each other twice in the tournament. Like exactly what happens in the IPL, after the league stage ends, the top 2 teams in the points table will directly play in the Qualifier 1 whereas the 3rd and 4th place teams will take head on in the Eliminator Match. Then the loser of Qualifier 1 and winner of the Eliminator match will face each other in Qualifier 2. Then finally the winner of Qualifier 1 and the winner of Qualifier 2 will lock horns in the finals on 22nd June.
