LSG Team 2025 Players List: History, Records and Achievements

The Lucknow Super Giants are one of the youngest franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise was established back in 2022 when the BCCI decided to expand the IPL from an 8-team tournament to a 10-team tournament. As part of the expansion, the Sanjiv Goenka led group won the bid for the Lucknow franchise and joined the league alongside the Gujarat Titans. Lucknow Super Giants in their relatively short history in the IPL has...

Lucknow Super Giants History

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are one of the two newest franchises to join the Indian Premier League (IPL), making their debut in the 2022 season. The team represents the city of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, and is owned by the RPSG Group, led by Sanjiv Goenka. Despite being a relatively new entrant in the league, LSG has quickly made a mark by qualifying for the playoffs in their first two seasons.

The team was born out of the IPL's decision to expand from eight to ten teams. In 2021, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the auction for two new franchises. The RPSG Group, which had previously owned the Rising Pune Supergiant franchise in 2016 and 2017, made a successful bid of INR 7090 crore (approx. US$940 million) to acquire the Lucknow-based franchise.

From its inception, the team aimed to blend experience with youth. KL Rahul, one of India's top-order batters and an established IPL performer, was appointed captain. The franchise also roped in Andy Flower as the head coach and Gautam Gambhir as the mentor, building a leadership group rich in tactical acumen and experience.

In their debut season, LSG surprised many by finishing third in the league stage and qualifying for the playoffs. Their mix of overseas stars like Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis, along with Indian talents such as Deepak Hooda, Avesh Khan, and Ravi Bishnoi, gave them the depth and versatility needed for success.

The team repeated their playoff qualification in 2023, again finishing third in the points table, establishing themselves as consistent contenders. Their home ground, the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, has become a fortress where they enjoy considerable local support.

In 2024, the team changed directions and appointed former Australia coach Justin Langer as the new head coach of the franchise. Under Langer and KL Rahul’s captaincy, the Lucknow Super Giants endured a topsy turvy campaign and missed out on Playoffs owing to net run rate. As a result, KL Rahul was dismissed as captain and in the mega auction, LSG made a statement by signing Rishabh Pant for a whopping 27 Crore INR.

However, the 2025 season didn’t go as per plan for the Lucknow Super Giants and Rishabh Pant found it hard to justify his price tag as he has struggled to score runs in the entire IPL. Under his captaincy, the LSG campaign has also tailed off as they could once again miss out on making the Playoffs. This has cast a shadow of doubt over Rishabh Pant and the future of Lucknow Super Giants.

While the elusive IPL trophy has not yet arrived, LSG's early years in the league have been marked by promise, strategic planning, and a bold brand of cricket that has set the tone for future success.

Lucknow Super Giants' IPL Journey by Year

Lucknow Super Giants Captain and Vice Captain Over the Years

Despite being a young franchise, LSG has had to navigate leadership transitions owing to injuries and form issues. KL Rahul, the marquee captain from Day 1, has been central to the team’s identity and strategy. However, vice-captains like Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran have stepped up when needed, ensuring continuity in leadership.

KL Rahul (2022-2024)

KL Rahul was one of the first players signed by Lucknow Super Giants and was immediately handed the captaincy. Known for his calm demeanor and batting prowess, Rahul brought leadership experience from his stint with Punjab Kings. Under him, LSG qualified for the playoffs in their first two seasons, showcasing tactical clarity and stability.

In 2022, he scored over 600 runs and led LSG to a third-place finish. The team eventually lost in the Eliminator to Royal Challengers Bangalore. In 2023, Rahul started the season as captain but had to step away due to an injury. Despite missing the latter half, he had set the tone for another playoff qualification.

In 2024, under a new head coach, Justin Langer, Rahul returned as captain but the team couldn’t replicate its earlier success, finishing 7th in the table. Things completely soured and the relationship between KL Rahul and LSG was beyond repair after owner Sanjiv Goenka was seen scolding KL Rahul in front of cameras after an emphatic loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. KL Rahul moved on from Lucknow post this incident and joined the Delhi Capitals.

Rishabh Pant (2025)

Post the sour end to the partnership between KL Rahul and Lucknow Super Giants, the LSG owners wanted to make a statement. And in the mega auction ahead of the 2025 season they splurged an enormous 27 Crore INR to snap up the services of star Indian wicket keeper and batsman Rishabh Pant.

Rishabh Pant was named the captain of the side and the expectations around him were very high. However, Pant has failed to deliver up to his price tag as his batting and leadership both have been lacking as Lucknow Super Giants have endured a very frustrating season and are almost out of the Playoffs race.

Lucknow Super Giants Key Rivalries

As one of the newest franchises in the Indian Premier League, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) may have only joined the league in 2022, but they’ve already carved out compelling rivalries in just a few seasons. With competitive performances and consistent playoff appearances in their first two seasons, the Super Giants have found themselves in high-stakes encounters that have added intensity and spark to their IPL journey.

Let’s take a closer look at the key rivalries that define Lucknow Super Giants’ short but impactful time in the IPL.

Lucknow Super Giants vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru

One of the most heated and talked-about rivalries in recent IPL seasons has been between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. What started as a typical league clash quickly turned into a fiery contest, especially after the infamous on-field altercation between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir during IPL 2023.

Both teams are stacked with international stars, and their face-offs have been intense, high-scoring affairs. The rivalry gained further traction after LSG defeated RCB in a thrilling last-ball finish in 2023, only to be outplayed in the return fixture.

Lucknow Super Giants vs Gujarat Titans

Both Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans share a rivalry with each other not because due to anything substantial happening on the pitch but simply because these two sides were the two new entrants into the IPL back in 2022. Hence, there has always been a narrative of who among these two sides have performed better till now and there is no denying that Gujarat Titans have trumped them in this rivalry.

Lucknow Super Giants vs Chennai Super Kings

A rivalry rooted in contrast — on one hand, you have the new-age LSG led by KL Rahul, and on the other, the mighty Chennai Super Kings helmed by MS Dhoni. Their matches have often been tactical battles, with LSG managing to outplay CSK on a few occasions, most memorably chasing down 210 in Chennai during IPL 2023.

Despite their short history, this rivalry has already seen its share of memorable moments and fanfare.

Lucknow Super Giants Achievements and Records

Despite being a relatively new entrant in the Indian Premier League, Lucknow Super Giants have quickly built a reputation as one of the most competitive and consistent teams. While they are yet to make it to a final or lift the IPL trophy, their back-to-back playoff appearances in their first two seasons and a strong squad core have laid the foundation for long-term success. Let’s take a look at some of their key team and individual records so far:

Lucknow Super Giants Team Owner and Sponsorships

Despite being a young franchise, Lucknow Super Giants have quickly grown into one of the most professionally run and financially stable teams in the IPL. Backed by strong ownership and commercial acumen, LSG have made bold moves on and off the field that have ensured their rising profile in Indian cricket.

Ownership: RPSG Group

The Lucknow franchise was bought by the RPSG Group, led by Sanjiv Goenka, for a record ₹7,090 crore (approximately $940 million) during the IPL 2022 expansion bidding process — making it one of the most expensive team acquisitions in cricket history.

RPSG Group had previously owned the Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017 and brought that experience into shaping LSG. Under Goenka’s leadership, LSG adopted a structured and data-driven approach, with strategic hires in coaching, analytics, and squad composition. The franchise’s branding — vibrant blue and orange — reflects its youthful and modern outlook.

The choice of KL Rahul as captain and Andy Flower as the first head coach set the tone for a franchise focused on both performance and professionalism.

Lucknow Super Giants Sponsors

In their short time in the IPL, LSG have built an impressive sponsor portfolio. The franchise has successfully attracted big-ticket brands from diverse industries, signaling their growing appeal among fans and marketers alike.

Title Sponsors Over the Years

My11Circle (2022–2024): The fantasy sports platform has been LSG’s title sponsor since their debut season. My11Circle’s early association gave the franchise a solid financial and branding foundation, helping them break into an already competitive IPL commercial space.

The brand alignment has proven to be mutually beneficial, with My11Circle leveraging LSG's rising popularity to expand its user base.

Dream 11 (2025): In 2025, however, Lucknow Super Giants like many other franchises has gone the route of roping in Dream 11 as the title sponsor of their team. Dream 11, the fantasy sports platform pipped MY11Cricle in 2025 as the Lucknow Super Giants decided to go this route in choosing their sponsor for the ongoing season. This suggests that Dream 11 is also heavily looking to make as many teams in IPL as their title sponsors.

Lucknow Super Giants Team Fan Following

For a franchise that is just three seasons old, Lucknow Super Giants have made significant inroads into the hearts of IPL fans. Their fan following has been driven by a mix of strategic regional focus, star-studded rosters, and consistent performances on the pitch.

From their base in Uttar Pradesh — India's most populous state — LSG enjoy massive support across cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, and beyond. Their association with marquee players like KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis, and Ravi Bishnoi has added glamour and cricketing appeal.

The arrival of Rishabh Pant in 2025 has further boosted the commercial appeal and the fan following of the Lucknow Super Giants. As the Pant army that is the passionate support group of the Lucknow Super Giants have gained a fresh boost of fanpower in their fanbase.

Lucknow Super Giants has the smallest fan base compared to all the other nine teams in the TATA IPL as of 2025. Hence, it becomes imperative for the Lucknow Super Giants to boast some star players like Rishabh Pant and Nicholas Pooran and do well with the performance on the field to continue to grow their fanbase.

Lucknow Super Giants 2025 Full Squad

However, in 2024 with a changed approach under Justin Langer as Gautam Gambhir departed for Kolkata Knight Riders and Andy Flower departed for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Super Giants took a new direction. They started the season promisingly and looked good to qualify. However, their season derailed and especially after the controversy between KL Rahul and Sanjiv Goenka the team crumbled and failed to qualify into the playoffs.

2025 season was supposed to be the new ray of light for the Lucknow Super Giants with a new leader coming in the form of Rishabh Pant and Zaheer Khan also joining as a mentor. However, the season has rarely gone according to plan as Rishabh Pant has struggled massively in his new role and has looked a shadow of a player he once was.

With Rishabh Pant failing to justify his price tag and Lucknow struggling for results, the owner Sanjiv Goenka might be getting impatient. Given their poor bowling depth and lack of planning, theirs a huge question mark over the future of the Lucknow Super Giants and how the team can proceed further. Come 2026 auction, Lucknow will have to address some key issues and will have to be spot on with their decision making. Can Lucknow Super Giants revive their fortunes going forward?
