Chennai Super Kings History

One of the most successful franchises in the IPL, the Chennai Super Kings . In 2008 Chennai Super Kings bought the Indian Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for 9.5 crores and He became the most expensive player in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League. Every team who participated in the auction made a bid for Dhoni but it was Chennai Super Kings who won the bid . Ms Dhoni then went on to become the face of this franchise .He went on to win 5 IPL titles for Chennai Super Kings as a captain which eventually gave him the fame and respect from the people of Chennai. He also got a nickname from CSK fans which is Thala.

Over the years Captain Ms Dhoni and Coach Stephen Fleming duo have worked well for the Chennai Super Kings and they have managed to dominate in this league. Chennai Super Kings played 10 finals and have won 5 out of those ,they have also qualified for the playoffs 12 times in their history. Chennai Super Kings were also suspended from IPL for 2 seasons in 2016 and 2017 . When one of the top official Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of the owner N Srinivasan was found guilty of cheating, forgery and fraud . Which eventually led to suspension of CSK along with Rajasthan Royals. But in the very next season when Chennai Super Kings came back they lifted the trophy in 2018 , heavily criticised as most of the players where above 30 and given a tag of dads army but they eventually went on to win the title on the very first season of their comeback.

There are very few Instances when Chennai Super Kings did not qualify for the playoffs . They failed to qualify for the playoffs just 3 times which shows the success of Chennai Super Kings. In 2020 when IPL was played behind closed doors during the covid era, CSK found it hard to adapt to the UAE’s condition and they finished on 7th position. In 2022 Chennai Super Kings where the defending champions that season but the squad didn't managed to play well and finished at the 9th position. In 2024 Chennai Super Kings needed to win their last league match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore but RCB managed to win that game and CSK was knocked out from the IPL.
