Emerging Sri Lankan talent Matheesha Pathirana is a right-armed pacer with a unique sling action. 22-year-old Matheesha Pathirana played for many Domestic and International T20 leagues, including LPL, Major League Cricket 2025, Bangladesh Premier League, and Sri Lanka’s Domestic cricket. He made his international debut in 2022, the same year when he grabbed an IPL job after replacing injured Adam Milne in the CSK. The Yellow army bagged him for his base price after he went unsold in the auction. However, his consistent performances in the 2023 season gave him regular appearances in the squad. The CSK retained him for the whopping amount of Rs 13 crore for the IPL 2025 season.

In the 2022 IPL season, Matheesha Pathirana made his IPL debut with Chennai Super Kings against Gujarat Titans on May 15 at Wankhede Stadium. In his first match, Matheesha Pathirana only delivered 3.1 overs while scalping two wickets for 24 runs. He also achieved a rare feat after dismissing Shubman Gill and became a bowler who took a wicket with their first ball on IPL debut.
Reminiscent of former Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga, Matheesha Pathirana was only 19 years old when he landed his first IPL contract with CSK. Since then, he has grown so much and honed his bowling skills under the mentorship of MS Dhoni. His ability to deliver yorkers and his pace make him one of the formidable players in the IPL. He became one of the Death-Over-Specialists and earned himself the name “Baby Malinga”.
In the 2025 IPL season, Matheesha Pathirana was one of the five players who were retained by the Chennai Super Kings. Sri Lankan Death-over specialist Matheesha Pathirana was retained for the whopping amount of Rs 13 crore after Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 18 crore), MS Dhoni (Rs 4 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 18 crore) and Shivam Dube (Rs 12 crore).

In his debut IPL season, Matheesha Pathirana and his slingy bowling action couldn’t get much chance, playing only two games in 2022. Finally, in the following season, Pathirana got a chance and didn’t disappoint. In fact, Pathirana contributed to some of CSK's triumph in the winning 2023 season. He also bagged a record of dismissing Shubman Gill with the opening ball in his debut game. He became the ninth overall and the first Sri Lankan player to take a first-ball wicket on debut in the IPL.
