Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen was one of the admirers of Sarfaraz’s impressive 17 Kg weight loss and lauded his determination on his social media account X. In his recent X post, Kevin Pietersen reposted Sarfaraz’s before-and-after photos on X, praising the Indian batter’s commitment to shedding 17 kg through a restricted diet.
In his post, Pietersen wrote, “Outstanding effort, young man! Huge congrats… Can someone show Prithvi this, please? It can be done"!.
While congratulating Sarfaraz, Pietersen also addressed Prithvi Shaw, an out-of-favor Indian batter, to draw inspiration from Sarfaraz’s dietary discipline and fitness journey, highlighting the transformative power of dedication in cricket.
England’s greats were mostly impressed with Sarfaraz’s diet that eliminated staples like roti, rice, and sugar in favor of lean proteins and vegetables.
Sarfaraz’s father and coach Naushad Khan revealed the secret behind his exclusive diet while talking to Hindustan Times in an interview.
In an interview, Naushad revealed that it was the family’s collective commitment to a cleaner, healthier diet. “We have controlled our diet a lot. We have stopped eating roti, rice, etc. We haven’t eaten roti or rice at home for 1 to 1.5 months,” he said.
High-calorie staples like roti, rice, sugar, maida (refined flour), and bakery items were eliminated. Sarfaraz also gave up his beloved chicken and mutton biryani, a significant sacrifice for the Mumbai batter known for his love of rich, flavorful foods.
Sarfaraz's new strict diet focuses on nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods. Lean proteins, with boiled or grilled chicken, grilled fish, and boiled eggs, provide high-quality protein for muscle recovery and maintenance, which is important to maintain stamina on the cricket field during long formats like Test and ODI.
Vegetables like broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, and green salads offer fiber, vitamins, and minerals while keeping calorie intake in check. Avocados and sprouts are included for healthy fats and additional protein, ensuring a balanced nutrient profile.
To replace sugary beverages, Sarfaraz switched to green tea and green coffee, known for their metabolism-boosting properties. As Naushad emphasized, “The main thing is that we have stopped eating roti and rice. We have stopped eating sugar.”
Other than diet, Sarfaraz maintained his discipline and a commitment to fitness with an intense fitness regimen to achieve his remarkable results. This involved rigorous gym sessions at the Mumbai Cricket Association’s BKC facility, daily jogging, and swimming. Naushad also revealed how his son lost 10 kg in six weeks ahead of the India A tour to England. By July, Sarfaraz shed an additional 7 kg, going from 95 kg to 78 kg.
Before Sarfarz’s transformation, his weight of 95 kg was constantly a center point for critics to question his fitness, despite his impressive domestic stats. After his transformation, Sarfaraz appears leaner, fitter, and more agile, with a physique tailored to modern cricket’s demands. By trading biryani for broccoli and roti for resolve, he has not only reshaped his body but also reignited hope for a triumphant return to the Indian Test squad.
While talking about his drastic weight change, Sarfaraz Khan shared how the former Indian captain, Virat Kohli, gave him honest feedback. The 27-year-old shared how teammates at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) called him names like ‘Panda’. However, unlike his teammates, Kohli gave the youngster honest feedback about how he needs to work on his fitness.
Khan went on to say that it was Kohli whose honest feedback that did wonders for him. The right-handed batter said, “I was dropped at RCB in 2016 because of my fitness. Virat Kohli bhaiya told me straightaway while there were no doubts over my skills, my fitness was not letting me get to the next level. Virat bhaiya was very honest with me about where I was.”
The drastic loss of weight from Sarfaraz can act as inspiration for many players who are out of the team setup due to their fitness. Kohli has long been the face of the Indian cricket team when it comes to showcasing fitness on the field.
