Emirates Old Trafford Stadium Pitch Report

Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester’s historic cricket ground, boasts a pitch renowned for its balance and rich cricketing legacy. Since its establishment in 1857 as the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club, the venue’s surface has evolved into a versatile stage for Test matches, ODIs, T20Is, and The Hundred. The pitch, crafted from loamy soil influenced by Manchester’s damp climate, offers true bounce and pace, making it a favorite for high-scoring encounters.
Historically, it favoured batsmen early, with an average first-innings score of 160 in T20s and 250.14 runs per match in The Hundred’s 14 games. The pitch’s firmness supports strokeplay, but its slight grass cover and Manchester’s humid conditions provide early seam movement for pacers. Spinners find grip later, especially in day games, as the surface dries. Advanced drainage and a hover cover ensure minimal rain disruptions, despite Manchester’s wet reputation.

Emirates Old Trafford Pitch Report: Batting or Bowling?

In 2025, the Emirates Old Trafford pitch shows a batting friendliness in the T20I matches but gives bowlers enough support to keep the contest interesting. In the Hundred, the situation is quite similar as the pitch is slowly turning into an electric venue for the limited-overs cricket. Across 26 T20Is, teams batting first have won 14 times, with an average first-innings score of 151 and a run rate of 7.93. Batsmen excel with aggressive shots, especially in the powerplay, though early swing under Manchester’s cloudy skies challenges openers.

Chasing teams have won 10 times, aided by evening dew that eases batting. Bowlers, however, find rewards—pacers exploit seam movement early, and spinners take over the game later. Overall, for T20I matches, Old Trafford provides a balanced pitch where batters can rule once they are stable, and bowlers with swing or spin can tilt tight games.

The Hundred, Emirates Old Trafford Weather Forecast

Based on historical trends and regional climate data, expect daytime temperatures of 18-22°C (64-72°F), with evenings cooling to 12-15°C. Partly cloudy skies with sunny spells are common, ideal for cricket, though Manchester’s reputation for rain means brief showers are possible, with a 20-30% chance of precipitation. Humidity, often moderate at 60-80%, may aid swing bowling, especially in early or evening games. Winds are generally light, around 5-10 km/h, from the northwest, minimizing disruptions. The venue’s advanced drainage and hover cover ensure quick recovery from any rain, reducing the risk of match delays. Day games will likely see drier, warmer conditions, while evening matches may encounter slight dew, favoring chasing teams.
