Table Of Contents

In T20 cricket, bowling three dot balls in a row is hard because the game focuses on aggressive batting. Taking a hat trick is even tougher. In T20s, bowlers often aim to stop runs, and a wicket-taking delivery may not always be the best option. Yet, skillful bowlers have managed to take wickets in consecutive deliveries.

In the IPL, conditions and ground sizes often favor batters. Evening matches in India can be especially tough for bowlers due to the dew on the field. The dew makes it harder for bowlers to grip the ball and improves the batting conditions. The pitch becomes easier to bat on, and the ball skids off the surface, making it easier for batters to play their shots. Despite these challenges, bowlers like Amit Mishra have shown their brilliance by taking hat-tricks in these tough conditions.

Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra has the most hat trick in IPL. The veteran Indian spinner has three hat tricks to his name. His first hat trick came in the first season in 2008. Mishra playing for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) took a hat trick against the Deccan Chargers. While defending 15 runs in the last over, Mishra dismissed Ravi Teja, Pragyan Ojha, and RP Singh on the first three balls to win the match for his team.

His second hat trick came when he was playing for Deccan Chargers against Kings XI Punjab. While defending a huge total of 199 runs his hat trick in the 16th over derailed the opposition. He dismissed Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh, and Ryan Harris to claim his second hat trick.

His third hat trick came for another different team in 2013 when he was playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. This time, Mishra and his team were defending a low total of 119 against the Pune Warriors India. PWI needed only 14 runs in the last two overs when Mishra came on to bowl. He dismissed Angelo Mathews on the second ball. On the last three balls of his over he dismissed Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, and Ashok Dinda to pick four wickets in the over and win the match for his side.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh is the second bowler to take more than one hat trick. The World Cup-winning all-rounder is the only bowler in the history of the IPL to pick two hat tricks in the same season. Yuvraj achieved this feat in the second season in 2009. Yuvraj’s first hat trick came in the first innings against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He dismissed Robin Uthappa and Jacques Kallis on the last two balls of the 12th over. He returned to bowl the 14th over and dismissed Mark Boucher on the first ball of the over to complete the hat trick. Unfortunately for Yuvraj, his hat trick was not enough to win the match for his team.

His second hat trick of the season came against the Deccan Chargers. Defending a total of 134, Yuvraj dismissed Herschelle Gibbs on the last ball of the 12th over. He dismissed Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao on the first two balls of his next over to complete the hat trick. His hat trick was really important as his team, Kings XI Punjab won the match by only one run.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal has been one of the best bowlers in the history of the Indian Premier League. It comes as no surprise that he is one of the three bowlers to have taken multiple hat-tricks in the competition. The Indian leg spinner also holds the record for taking the most wickets in the IPL. His first hat-trick came in 2022 while playing for the Rajasthan Royals against the Kolkata Knight Riders. He came on to bowl the 17th over with KKR needing only 40 runs in four overs. On the first ball of the over, Chahal dismissed Venkatesh Iyer. After a dot and a single, Shreyas Iyer, who had scored 85 runs in 50 balls, returned to the crease. The leg-spinner then dismissed Shreyas, Shivam Mavi, and Pat Cummins on the last three balls of the over to pick up a hat-trick. His over turned the game on its head as RR went on to win the game by seven runs.

Chahal’s second hat-trick came in 2025 against the Chennai Super Kings while playing for the Punjab Kings at the Chidambaram Stadium. Once again, the right-arm leg spinner came on to bowl at the death. Bowling the 19th over of the first innings, he was smashed for a six by MS Dhoni, but bounced back strongly, dismissing the CSK skipper on the very next ball. Like his first hat-trick, he picked up three wickets on the last balls in the over, dismissing Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad. Chahal’s hat-trick meant that CSK ended short by at least 10 runs allowing PBKS to chase down the target in the final over.

Lakshmipathy Balaji

Apart from Amit Mishra and Yuvraj Singh, 17 bowlers have taken a hat trick once in the IPL. Balaji was the first player to take a hat trick in IPL. Playing for Chennai Super Kings, Balaji created history by picking up the first hat trick against Kings XI Punjab in Chennai. Balaji picked up a hat trick in the last over dismissing Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, and Vikram Singh. His hat trick along with his two other wickets helped CSK to win the match by 18 runs.

Makhaya Ntini

Makhaya Ntini was the first overseas player to take a hat trick in the IPL. Ntini while playing for CSK picked up a hat trick against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008. The South African pacer dismissed Sourav Ganguly in the fifth over of the first innings. He came back to bowl in the death overs. Ntini dismissed Debabrata Das and David Hussey on the first two balls of the 17th over. His hat trick along with some rain helped the five-time champions to register a win against the three-time champions.

First Hat Trick in IPL

Lakshmipathy Balaji took the first hat trick in IPL history in 2008 while playing for Chennai Super Kings against Kings XI Punjab. CSK scored 181 runs in the first innings with crucial contributions from Subramaniam Badrinath and MS Dhoni.

When Balaji came in to bowl, he made an impact by dismissing Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shaun Marsh early in the game. The real magic happened in the final over. Balaji bowled a slower delivery on the third ball that dismissed Irfan Pathan, who was playing well at 40 off 18 balls. Pathan mistimed his shot and got out.

The next wicket came as Piyush Chawla tried to hit a six but ended up giving an easy catch to Chamara Kapugedera. To complete his hattrick, Balaji bowled a short delivery, which was edged by Vikram Singh into the hands of MS Dhoni.

This hat trick not only ensured a win for CSK but also Balaji entered the IPL history books as the first bowler to achieve the feat.
