Annually, eight teams participated with 16 to 20 players in each team, including up to two outstation players in the TNPL. Each team faces each other in a round-robin stage and gets points for a win. Finally four top teams participated in the playoffs (two qualifiers, eliminator, final).

As of 2025, the TNCA has successfully organised the eight season of the TNPL while ninth running The ninth season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League is taking place from 5 June to 6 July 2025 at multiple venues- SNR College Cricket Ground, SCF Cricket Ground, Indian Cement Company Ground, and NPR College Ground. The knockout round will start on July 1st and conclude on July 6th at the NPR College Ground in Dindigul.

Abhishek Tanwar is a right-arm medium pacer known for taking consistent wickets, especially in death overs. He was the highest wicket-taker in the 2018 and 2022 TNPL seasons and is known for his deadly Super Overs, notably taking two wickets for the Madurai Panthers in 2019. Sai Kishore is the second bowler with the most wickets in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.
