Shreyas Iyer’s current Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Punjab Kings (PBKS), posted a video of the Indian batter spending an ample amount of time with his family. In the video, Iyer was seen playing cricket with his mother, Rohini Iyer.
In the video, it can be seen that Shreyas Iyer and his mother are playing some casual cricket. Iyer defended the low full-toss first ball before his defence was broken by a beautiful delivery from his mother. The ball went straight between the bat and the pad gap. Iyer’s mother was full of joy upon taking the wicket of his son.
Punjab Kings posted the video across their social media with the caption reading, “Only time SARPANCH won’t mind getting bowled.” Iyer and Indian fans shared heartfelt comments for the mother-son duo’s dear moment.
One of the comments read, “Look at his mother's celebration,” while several comments praised the bond between the mother and son.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer’s mother and his family will be proud of their son. Iyer has established himself as one of the crucial members of the Indian cricket team with spectacular performance, especially in the ICC events.
Shreyas played a pivotal role in guiding the Indian cricket team to victory at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. He scored 243 runs in 5 innings, including a valuable 48 runs off 62 balls in the final match vs New Zealand.
He also had a terrific ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign. The Mumbai batsman amassed 530 runs at an average of 66.25 across 11 innings. He will be remembered for his 105-run knock off 70 balls vs New Zealand in the semi-finals.
However, he was dismissed for just 4 runs in the final match vs Australia, which India eventually lost.
Iyer's time in the IPL has also been incredibly successful, particularly as captain. Shreyas Iyer played for three different teams in his IPL career. Following Gautam Gambhir's tenure, he assumed the captaincy of the Delhi Capitals and ultimately led the team to the 2020 IPL Final. Nevertheless, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Capitals.
He then joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022 and guided the team to victory in 2024. It was his first IPL title, and he claimed it as the captain of the Knight Riders.
However, due to salary and retention-related issues, Shreyas Iyer left Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and was signed by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for a whopping INR 26.75 Crore salary. Iyer almost won the title again, guiding PBKS to one of their best-ever IPL campaigns.
With nine victories in fourteen games, the Kings were at the top of the points standings. It was after a long 10-year gap that Punjab reached the playoffs since 2014. However, they lost to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final by 6 runs, who just claimed their first IPL title in 18 years, denying the Kings the opportunity to win their first title.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has been overlooked by the selection committee for India’s tour of England for a 5 match Test series. Iyer is currently one of the best middle-order batters in India, and after the retirement of star batter Virat Kohli, everyone felt Iyer would be the ideal candidate to fill that spot.
However, he was not considered for selection for the Test series as Karun Nair was rewarded for his domestic performance and was picked ahead of the Mumbai batter.
Before the team selection meeting for the England series, Shreyas Iyer enjoyed arguably the best 12 months of his career. In the Ranji Trophy 2024-2025, he accumulated 480 runs across 7 innings, while in the Duleep Trophy, he scored an additional 154 runs in 6 innings. He also contributed 65 runs over 2 innings in the Irani Trophy. Beyond these performances, he led KKR to triumph in IPL 2024 and steered the Mumbai state team to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Team India selection committee’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated during the squad announcement that there was no room for Iyer in the Test cricket scheme of things. “Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him on the Test Team,” Agarkar said.
