With the suspension of the series against Bangladesh, Team India has a big free window in August, which is almost a rarity now in modern-day cricket. This has allowed for Bilateral series talks with their neighbouring country, Sri Lanka, around mid-August.
As reported by a NewsWire article, discussions are currently ongoing between Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding a multi-format series planned for mid-August.
Sri Lanka’s premier T20 cricket league, the Lanka Premier League (LPL) which was scheduled to take place during the July-August window, has been postponed. It has allowed Sri Lanka a free window of a month.
Sri Lanka is hosting the Bangladesh national cricket team as part of a multi-format series at this time. The hosts have already won the two-match Test series 1-0 and the ODI series 2-1. The three-match T20I series is scheduled to be played between July 10-16.
However, after this series, Sri Lanka won’t be in action until August last week when they travel to Zimbabwe for 2 ODIs and 3 T20Is.
The NewsWire report added that, “With India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh postponed, discussions are underway about the possibility of a limited overs series between Sri Lanka and India in mid-August.”
“The postponement of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), originally set for July-August, has further cleared the calendar for Sri Lanka, creating a rare window where both teams are available,” it further adds.
The series hasn’t yet been officially announced by either BCCI or SLC, and it is currently in the discussion phase. The last time Team India and Sri Lanka met was in July-August 2024. India won the 3 match T20I series 3-0 while the hosts, Sri Lanka, won the three-match ODI series 2-0.
Team India has had an interesting 2025. They lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 to lose an opportunity to play the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final. However, they bounced back just a couple of days later as they won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai.
Then came two big blows as star Indian batsman Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from Test cricket. Shubman Gill is now the new captain of the Test team.
Currently, India is up against England in a five-match Test series in England, with Gill as the captain.
After the conclusion of the England series, Team India will then be in action in the Asia Cup 2025, which will be a T20 tournament this year. The schedule for the tournament hasn't officially been announced yet, but it likely will start in the 2nd week of September and conclude before the end of the month.
After the Asia Cup 2025, Team India will then host the West Indies team for a 2-match Test series in early October.
After that, they will be on a white ball tour of Australia from the 3rd week of October until the first week of November. The series will consist of 3 ODIS and 5 crucial T20Is ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 to be played in India.
After that, from November 14 to December 19, Team India will play a home series against South Africa to close out 2025. The series will include 2 Test matches, 3 ODIs, and once again 5 T20Is.
