A BCCI source aware of the matter told PTI, "Abhishek Sharma is the world's number one T20 batsman in the last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson performed brilliantly with both batting and wicket-keeping last season. So it will be a difficult decision to take, but looking at Shubman's current form (in Tests, though), it cannot be ignored. His performance in the IPL was also good. The problem for the selectors is that there are many good players in the top order.”
From these reports, it is clear from the sources how difficult it has become to find a place in the Indian T20 team for any series or tournament.
With so many players in the top order performing outstandingly in recent times for India and in the IPL, it will be very difficult for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan to find a place. Even KL Rahul, who is now the first-choice wicketkeeper in ODIs, is unlikely to be considered in the team as he does not bat well in the middle order in T20S. The report further states that the BCCI selection committee will not be keen on changing this setup, as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya complete the top five.
Samson is almost certain to be selected as the first wicketkeeper for the Asia Cup 2025. But the choice for the second wicketkeeper will be between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Jurel was part of the last T20 series, while Jitesh was impressive for RCB in the IPL. A big plus point for Jitesh Sharma will be that he batted as a finisher for RCB in IPL 2025, so he can be kept in the team as a finisher.
Hardik Pandya remains India's first-choice white-ball seam bowling all-rounder. But Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was injured during the England series, is unlikely to be fit in time. So, Shivam Dubey, who made a good comeback against England, is likely to get a place in the team. Apart from this, in the last few years, Dube has also shown good performance in the IPL. Axar and Washington Sundar will be the two spin-bowling all-rounders who are likely to remain in the squad. While Axar Patel has proved himself as a brilliant all-rounder for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, on the other hand, Washington Sundar also gave a very good performance with the bat on the England tour, which ended in a draw.
The main contention will be the fast bowling attack, in which Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh have cemented their places. The contest for the third spot is between Prasidh Krishna, who took 25 wickets in the last IPL, and Harshit Rana, who is capable of bowling some very heavy deliveries.
Whereas Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal are not likely to be included in the team because the 5 top-order batters are already performing well, so the BCCI didn't want any changes in them. KL Rahul, who performed well against England in the test series recently, may not be included in the Asia Cup 2025 squad because the Indian team already has good wicket-keeping options available. Nitish Reddy may not be able to play the Asia Cup 2025 due to injury. Apart from this, Mohammed Siraj, who recently performed brilliantly for the Indian team on the England tour, is also finding it difficult to get a place in the Asia Cup team, reports claimed.
