As the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara opens itself to the enigma that is the Women’s Premier League, both MI W and DC W will play their first match at the stadium. The Kotambi stadium will be hosting the first leg of the tournament starting from the season opener between RCB W and GG W. The stadium hosted a few international games before the WPL. The Indian women’s team played three WODIs against the West Indies and clean-swept the visitors.
The Kotambi Stadium hosted its first T20 match yesterday between RCB W and GG W. It was a high-octane match as the batters feasted on a great pitch. Having put into bat after losing the toss, GG scored 201 runs. In spite of removing the two RCB openers, GG Women could not get the job done thanks to a blistering unbeaten knock of 64 runs in 27 balls.
Most of the records in MI W vs DC W head-to-head clashes are held by players from Delhi Capitals. This shows how even after the brilliance of a few individuals, the overall win/loss is hardly affected in cricket. This reinstates the fact that to win a game of cricket a team needs more than just two-three players carrying the team.
Meg Lanning has scored the most runs in five matches between DC W and MI W. The former Australian skipper also holds the record for the best batting average. While all-rounder, Hayley Matthews has the most wickets in the fixture. Matthews also has the best bowling figures in previous clashes.
The MI W vs DC W head-to-head record will be hugely affected by the performance of some key players from both teams. These players would play a crucial role if their side goes on to win their first game in the new season. Getting a win under your belt early in the season can lead to a great start.
Hayley Matthews is often the best batter on display irrespective of the tournament or the format. The opener from the West Indies has had a stellar time at the top of the order already in 2025. She made 142 runs in three ODIs at an average of 71 while striking at 95.3. She has played two T20Is since the start of the year and has scored 87 runs while being dismissed only once at a strike rate of 120. In the WBBL, Matthews made 324 runs in 10 games for the Melbourne Renegades as they went on to win the championship.
Nat Sciver-Brunt is one of the finest all-rounders in the history of women’s cricket. The English all-rounder has been unarguably the best player in the WPL across the two seasons. In 19 games, she has scored the fifth most runs and has taken the joint fifth-highest wickets. With the bat in hand, she played a huge role when MI won the title in the inaugural season. She was named the Player of the Match in the final for her unbeaten knock of 60 runs in 55 balls. The right-arm medium pacer has taken 10 wickets each in the two seasons.
Amelia Kerr as a 24-year-old has already achieved more than most cricketers manage to do in their career. Kerr is a bowling all-rounder and has taken 22 wickets in the WPL. She has also scored 364 runs with the bat in hand. The right-arm leg-spinner has been in great form in recent times and was also named the T20I cricketer of the year. In 18 games during the calendar year, she picked up 29 wickets at an average of 15.55. She also scored 387 runs with the bat in hand and her form would be crucial for MI’s success in the upcoming season.
Meg Lanning retired from international cricket before the WPL even began. However, in spite of retiring two years ago from the international stage, the former Australian batter is one of the best in business. She has scored the most runs in the Indian T20 league. Lanning in 18 games has scored 676 runs averaging 42.25. Her partnership with Shafali Verma at the top of the order has been one of the biggest reasons behind DC’s success in the WPL. She will be expected to carry on with her form in the league as they attempt to win their first title after finishing runners-up in 2023 and 2024.
Annabel Sutherland is yet to make a huge impact in the WPL. However, the Australian all-rounder has been in sublime touch on the international stage since the start of 2024. In her last 15 ODIs, Sutherland has scored 400 runs averaging 40, and has picked up 15 wickets at 22 apiece. She was also honored with the Belinda Clark Award for being the best Australian women cricketer in 2024.
Arundhati Reddy is an up-and-coming fast bowler from India. However, she has been unfortunate to have played only 38 games on the international stage. The right-arm pacer has played five WODIs and picked up eight wickets while maintaining an economy of 4.47 runs per over. In WT20Is, Reddy featured in seven games in 2024 and took 10 wickets going at 6.5 runs per over. She could be a great fast-bowling partner to Marizanne Kapp.
