Who won the last IPL in 2024?

Kolkata Knight Riders were the latest team to get their name on the IPL winners list in 2024. The Knight Riders won the title for the third time in their history. Shreyas Iyer led the side to their third title and won his first trophy as the captain.

KKR started the season with three wins in a row in the first three games. The first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens was a pretty close affair, which the hosts won in the final over by four runs. Their first loss of the season came against the Super Kings by seven wickets at the Chidambaram Stadium. KKR lost two more games, the second one being more distressing than the first against the Rajasthan Royals.

In a historic clash between the Knight Riders and the Punjab Kings in Kolkata. After being set a target of 262 runs, the visitors created history by chasing down the highest target in the history of the IPL.

The Shreyas Iyer-led unit won 10 of their 14 games in the league stage, while two were abandoned without a ball being bowled. KKR topped the table with 20 points in a dominating fashion.

In qualifier 1, they faced off against SRH at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. It was a great bowling performance from the three-time champions as they bowled out their opponents for a score of 159 runs. KKR chased down the total with ease in 13.4 overs and won the game by eight wickets to make it to the final.

In the finals, they met with SRH yet again at the Chidambaram Stadium. Once again, it was a similar fate for the Orange Army as they were bowled out for the lowest score in IPL finals. The Knight Riders won the clash by eight wickets to be crowned champions for the third time in their history.

Rajasthan Royals in 2008

Loading table...

Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. Led by Shane Warne, it was a team of young and inexperienced cricketers, including the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan. Warne led the team with great gusto and did a fantastic job of getting the Royals to be the first team in the IPL winners list with a bunch of players who the experts at the start of the season did not give a great chance.

Their campaign started with a thumping nine-wicket loss against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). However, after that clash, the Royals went on a five-match winning streak. Their second loss in the season came against the Mumbai Indians, which they avenged later in the season. Ending the league stage, the Warne-led side was defeated by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).

In the semi-finals, RR faced off against the Daredevils. But, unlike their first match against the same opponent, the Royals registered a thumping 105-run victory thanks to an all-round performance from Shane Watson, who scored a half-century and picked up three wickets.

In the final, Chennai Super Kings met with RR in a closely-contested affair that went to the last ball. Batting first, CSK scored 163 runs with Yusuf Pathan picking up three wickets for the bowling side. In the second innings, the Royals started off poorly, losing three wickets with 42 runs on the board. However, the hero from the first innings and the player of the match from the semi-finals stitched together a more-than-useful 65-run stand for the fourth wicket. Yusuf scored a half-century but was dismissed before he could win the match for his team. Skipper, Warne and Sohail Tanvir put together an unbeaten 21-run stand to seal the win for RR on the final ball of the game.

Shane Watson was named the player of the series for his incredible all-round performance. The Australian scored 472 runs and took 17 wickets as well. Yusuf Pathan, on the other hand, was named the player of the match in the final after playing a crucial role in RR winning the first IPL trophy.

Deccan Chargers in 2009

Loading table...

After finishing at the bottom of the points table in 2008, Adam Gilchrist led the now-defunct Deccan Chargers to the title in 2009. It came without much surprise that the first two titles were won by teams led by Australian cricketers. Both Gilchrist and Warne had been a part of the Australian side that was used to winning trophies, and they carried forward the same mindset in the Indian Premier League as well. The tournament was being held in South Africa due to the general elections in India.

Deccan Chargers started their campaign on a great note. They won their first five games without much trouble. Their winning streak was broken by Delhi Daredevils, and it resulted in three losses in a row for the Gilchrist-led side. Unlike the Rajasthan Royals in their title-winning season, DC could not win as many games. In the league stage, they won only seven games after starting the season with five wins in a row. They finished fourth in the points table with 14 points and only managed to qualify for the semi-finals thanks to their superior net run rate in comparison to Punjab Kings, who also had 14 points.

In the semi-finals, DC faced off against the first-placed Delhi Daredevils. Ryan Harris in the first innings was the star performer for the Chargers as he started with a double-wicket maiden. Virender Sehwag and Tillakaratne Dilshan played some impactful knocks to push the batting team to a score of 153 runs. Adam Gilchrist in the second innings played a match-winning knock of 85 runs in only 35 balls. Even after the left-handed batter was dismissed by Amit Mishra, he had sealed the win to qualify for the final.

Unlike the semi-final, Gilchrist was dismissed in the very first over in the final by Anil Kumble. Herschelle Gibbs scored an uncharacteristic half-century playing at a strike rate of only 110. Kumble for RCB was the standout bowler as he picked up four wickets in his full quota while giving away only 16 runs. His controlled bowling helped RCB in restricting the Chargers to a score of 143 runs. In the second innings, it was a complete bowling performance from the Gilchrist-led side as they managed to restrict Kumble’s RCB to only 137 runs and won the match by six runs. Pragyan Ojha claimed three wickets in the innings while Andrew Symonds and Harmeet Singh picked up a couple of wickets each.

Adam Gilchrist, RP Singh, Andrew Symonds, and Rohit Sharma played impactful roles in the Deccan Chargers winning the title. Gilchrist scored 495 runs, RP picked up 23 wickets, Symonds scored 249 runs and took seven wickets, and Rohit made 362 runs while picking up 11 wickets, which included a hat-trick against the Mumbai Indians.

Chennai Super Kings in 2010

Loading table...

The IPL got its first Indian captain winning the title in its third season as the five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, won their first title in 2010. MS Dhoni led the men in yellow to their first title.

CSK faced off Deccan Chargers in their first game of the season and suffered a defeat. They won their next two games before succumbing to four defeats in a row, which included losing a super over against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). In their next four games in Chennai, CSK was undefeated before the Daredevils won a close encounter. They won their last group stage match, helping them to qualify for the playoffs after tying in points with three other teams.

In the semi-final, the Dhoni-led side clashed with defending champions, the Deccan Chargers. Batting first, CSK managed only 142 runs in their 20 overs, thanks to a couple of knocks in the 30s by S Badrinath and Dhoni before Srikkanth Anirudha played a cameo at number seven. Defending a meagre total, the Super Kings put up a great all-round bowling performance. Doug Bollinger picked up four wickets and was also the most economical bowler in the innings. In his four overs, the Aussie pacer gave away only 13 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin, Muttiah Muralidaran, and Albie Morkel picked up a wicket each and gave away less than six runs per over. In the end, CSK won the clash by 38 runs.

In the final, the two biggest teams in the history of the tournament clashed as the Mumbai Indians took on the Super Kings at the DY Patil Stadium. Batting first, CSK scored 168 thanks to a hard-hitting half-century from Suresh Raina. In the second innings, it was yet another great execution from the bowlers. Shadab Jakati picked up a couple of wickets while the other bowlers chipped in with some economical bowling and a few wickets.

Suresh Raina was the standout performer for the Super Kings in the season. He scored 520 runs in the season while also bowling some useful overs and picking up six wickets.

Chennai Super Kings in 2011

Loading table...

Chennai Super Kings became the first team in the history of the Indian Premier League to get their names on the IPL winners list for two seasons in a row. Having won the trophy in 2010, Dhoni led the team to the title once again in the very next year.

After winning the trophy the previous season, CSK played the opening match of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders at their home. They got off to a winning start to the season before losing against Kings XI Punjab away from home. In their next two away games against Kochi Tuskers Kerala (now defunct) and Mumbai Indians, the Super Kings faced defeats. However, at home, they were still unbeatable, and as the season progressed, they quickly turned around their form outside the Chidambaram Stadium as well. They recorded wins in Jaipur against the Rajasthan Royals and at DY Patil Stadium against Pune Warriors India (now defunct). CSK finished the league stage in second place after losing their last game to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who finished first.

In qualifier 1, CSK avenged their loss from the league stage as they defeated RCB by six wickets. In the first innings, Virat Kohli played a great unbeaten knock of 70 runs in 44 deliveries to push RCB to a score of 175 runs. Suresh Raina, in response, scored 73 runs in 50 balls and received a great deal of support from Albie Morkel, who made 28 runs in only 10 balls and helped the Super Kings win the clash in the final over to qualify for the finals.

In the finals, the two southern teams met once again. Batting first, the openers from CSK, Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay stitched together a 159-run stand. Hussey scored 63 runs in 45 balls and was the first one to be dismissed, while Vijay narrowly missed out on a century, having been dismissed for a score of 95 runs. Dwayne Bravo struck a six on the final ball of the innings to go past the 200-run mark. In the second innings, chasing a high total, RCB never got off to a good start. Ravichandran Ashwin and Shadab Jakati created a truckload of problems. Ashwin claimed three wickets while going for only 16 runs in four overs. Jakati, on the other hand, gave away 21 runs while picking up a couple of wickets.

Ashwin and Raina were the consistent performers for CSK as they defended their title. The off-spinner picked 20 wickets while the left-handed batter scored 438 runs and also picked up four wickets during the season.

Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012

Loading table...

Kolkata Knight Riders won their first title in 2012 under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. Up until the 2012 season, the Knight Riders were an underrated unit. Till 2011, they had finished sixth twice, last once, and had qualified for the playoffs only once by finishing fourth.

In 2012, they started their season with a loss at Eden Gardens in a rain-curtailed match against the Delhi Daredevils. Away from home in Jaipur, the Rajasthan Royals claimed a win over the travelling Knights. They got on a roll after the defeat against the Royals. KKR won their next eight out of the nine completed matches. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings halted their momentum before they won their last two league stage games to finish second in the points table.

In Qualifier 1, KKR clashed against the Delhi Daredevils. Having lost their first game of the season against the same opponent, they took their revenge in a highly crucial clash. Batting first, no batter from the Gautam Gambhir-led side managed to score a fifty. The skipper, Gambhir, played a crucial knock, scoring 32 runs in only 16 balls before Yusuf Pathan applied the finishing touches to the innings by scoring 40 runs in 21 balls. Chasing a target of 163 runs, no one from DD got going thanks to some controlled bowling from KKR. Jacques Kallis and Sunil Narine produced identical figures of 2/24 in their respective four overs. Other bowlers too picked up a wicket each while remaining economical.

In the final, Gambhir’s KKR met with a Chennai Super Kings side that was attempting a three-peat of titles. Batting first, CSK got off to a great start. Both openers, Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay, looked in great touch before Suresh Raina stole the show. The left-handed batter scored 73 runs in only 38 balls before being dismissed on the final ball of the innings. In response, Gautam Gambhir was dismissed in the very first over. However, Manvinder Bisla, replacing Brendon McCullum and Jacques Kallis, shared a 136-run stand before the South African batter was sent back to the pavilion. While Kallis was dismissed, Bisla remained at the crease and played a match-winning knock of 89 runs off 48 deliveries. Shakib al Hasan and Manoj Tiwary sealed the win with a 17-run stand in the final over of the game.

Gambhir, Kallis, and Sunil Narine played crucial roles in winning KKR’s first IPL trophy. The skipper, Gambhir, in addition to leading the side brilliantly, scored 590 runs in 17 games. Kallis put on an all-round show during the season and made 409 runs, along with picking up 15 wickets. Narine was at his best with the ball in hand. He was the second-highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps while giving only 5.47 runs per over.

Mumbai Indians in 2013

Loading table...

Five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, won their first title in 2013 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. In the first six games of the season, it was Ricky Ponting who led the side. However, in spite of winning three of their games, poor form with the bat in hand led to Ponting dropping himself from the team and handing the reins to Rohit Sharma.

MI started the season with a loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore away from home. They bounced back with three wins in a row before the Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils arrested their winning momentum in Jaipur and Delhi, respectively. The moment Rohit was handed the captaincy role with MI, he got them back to winning ways. He led the side to eight wins in the next 10 fixtures in the league stage, losing only to Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab.

In Qualifier 1, Mumbai Indians met with arch-rivals, Chennai Super Kings. Batting first, CSK scored 192 runs for the loss of only a solitary wicket. Both Michael Hussey and Suresh Raina played great knocks. Hussey scored 86 runs in only 58 balls, hitting 10 fours and a couple of sixes. However, Raina went one step further with his powerful batting. He scored 82 runs in only 42 balls, hitting five fours and sixes each. In response, Dwayne Smith scored 68 runs in only 28 balls, but there was no support from the opposite end, which meant that MI lost the clash by 48 runs.

In Qualifier 2, MI clashed with Rahul Dravid’s Rajasthan Royals. Batting first, skipper, Dravid and Dishant Yagnik were the top scorers. Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh bowled a match-winning spell where he picked up three wickets while giving away only 23 runs in his four overs. Dwayne Smith carried on with his form from the previous clash and scored 62 runs in 44 balls. Aditya Tare chipped in with a knock of 35 runs before some useful contributions lower down the order helped the Rohit Sharma-led side to win the match.

In the final, the Mumbai Indians once again met with Chennai Super Kings in an attempt to avenge their loss from Qualifier 1. MI won the toss and elected to bat first at Eden Gardens. It was a poor start for the batting team as they lost four wickets with only 52 runs on the board. Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard were the only positives in a poor batting performance. Rayudu scored 37 runs in 36 balls, but Pollard’s knock proved to be the difference between the two sides. The Trinidadian batter scored 60 runs in only 32 balls, hitting seven fours and three sixes. MI managed to score only 148 runs, with the fast bowlers making a huge impact. Like the first innings, CSK’s batting started on an even worse note. They lost eight wickets with only 58 runs on the board. MS Dhoni remained unbeaten and scored 63 runs in 45 balls, but without any support from the rest of the batters, he could not lead his side to victory.

Harbhajan Singh and Mitchell Johnson were the standout bowlers. The two players picked up 24 wickets each in the season. The right-arm off-spinner was pretty economical and gave away only 6.51 runs per over. Johnson, on the other hand, struck on an average of 16 balls.

Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014

Loading table...

Kolkata Knight Riders, after Chennai Super Kings, became only the second team to win multiple titles. Gautam Gambhir once again led the Knight Riders to another trophy. It was a fairytale comeback story for the eventual champions during the seventh season of the Indian Premier League. The first few games of IPL 2014 were held in the United Arab Emirates, with general elections happening in India.

KKR started their campaign with two losses in the first three games. However, their season went off the rails from that point forward. They lost four games in a row and were placed in the bottom half of the points table for a long time. Gambhir’s KKR then staged a one-of-a-kind comeback and won six games in a row to finish in second place on the points table. Not only did they win six games on the trot, but they also made sure to finish games quickly to boost their net run rate. In the last game of the league stage, KKR chased down a target of 161 runs in only 14.2 overs and overtook CSK on the points table.

In Qualifier 1, KKR and Kings XI Punjab clashed. Batting first, the Knight Riders got off to a great start thanks to Robin Uthappa scoring 42 runs in only 30 balls. They lost wickets in quick succession during the middle-overs phase before Ryan ten Doeschate, Suryakumar Yadav, and Piyush Chawla provided the finishing touch to the innings. The three combined to score 54 runs in only 33 balls. In the second innings, Umesh Yadav and Morne Morkel broke the back of the KXIP batting unit and sealed the seventh game in a row. The Indian pacer picked up three wickets while giving away only 13 runs in his four overs. Meanwhile, Morkel claimed a couple of wickets in his quota while giving away 23 runs.

In the final, it was a repeat of Qualifier 1 as the Kings XI Punjab faced Kolkata Knight Riders at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Wriddhiman Saha for KXIP played a historic innings in the final as he became the first player to score a century in an IPL final. They had lost two wickets for 30 runs, but Saha and Manan Vohra put together a 129-run stand. The wicketkeeper batter remained unbeaten and scored 115 runs in only 55 balls to set a target of 200 runs for KKR. Robin Uthappa, the best batter for his team in the season, was dismissed in the very first over after scoring only five runs. Manish Pandey, coming in at number three, played a match-defining knock. The right-handed batter scored 94 runs in only 50 balls before being dismissed in the 17th over. He received a great deal of support from Yusuf Pathan, who scored 36 runs in only 22 balls. KKR were in a spot of bother when they lost their seventh wicket on the second ball of the 19th over. Piyush Chawla, playing against his former team, struck a timely four and a six to win the match by three wickets on the third ball of the final over.

Robin Uthappa, Shakib al Hasan, and Sunil Narine played crucial roles in KKR’s title-winning season. Uthappa scored 660 runs in the season and became the first player to win the trophy and Orange Cap in the same season. Shakib al Hasan made 227 runs in addition to picking up 11 wickets. Narine, on the other hand, claimed 21 wickets in the season and once again was pretty economical.

Mumbai Indians in 2015

Loading table...

Mumbai Indians won their second IPL trophy under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. The 2015 season was one of the first times when the Mumbai Indians showed that, in spite of starting their season slowly, they can still finish in the top half of the IPL points table.

In their first six games, the Rohit Sharma-led side could only win once against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The team then went on to win five games in a row before losing to RCB in the reverse fixture in Mumbai. The champions from 2013 ended the league stage with two wins against the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and ended the league stage in second position in the points table.

MI clashed with Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1. Like their clash against the same opponent in the final in 2013, Kieron Pollard once again broke many hearts. Batting first, MI got off to a great start thanks to a couple of stable knocks from the two opening batters. Lendl Simmons scored 65 runs in 51 balls while Parthiv Patel scored 35 runs in 25 balls. Pollard coming into bat at number four changed the game on its head, scoring 41 runs off 21 deliveries. He struck a solitary four and five sixes. In the second innings, Lasith Malinga provided a great start, dismissing Dwayne Smith in the very first over. All MI bowlers rallied around and picked up crucial wickets at regular junctures. While Malinga finished with a three-fer, Harbhajan Singh and Vinay Kumar took two wickets each.

In the final, it was once again a showdown between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma as two of the most successful teams in the history of the tournament clashed. Batting first, MI lost Parthiv Patel early in the innings in the first over. However, Lendl Simmons and Rohit Sharma stabilised the innings with a 119-run stand. Both batters scored fifties, with Simmons scoring 68 runs in 45 balls while the skipper made 50 runs in only 26 balls. Kieron Pollard once again proved to be at his best with a knock of 36 runs in 18 balls to finish off the innings. Chasing a target of 203 runs, Dwayne Smith scored a crucial half-century, but it came at a pretty slow strike rate. Mitchell McCleneghan and Lasith Malinga proved to be the difference with the ball in hand. The two overseas pacers gave away only 50 runs in their eight overs while picking up five wickets and led their team to a 41-run victory.

Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh were the star performers for the Mumbai Indians during the season. The right-arm Sri Lankan pacer troubled batters with his slinky action and picked up 24 wickets. Harbhajan took 15 wickets and scored 117 runs as well with the bat in hand.

Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016

Loading table...

Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 created history by becoming the first team to win an IPL title without playing Qualifier 1. David Warner, after a gap of six seasons, became the first overseas captain to win the trophy. Once again, it was an Australian captain who followed the footsteps of Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist and got SRH into the IPL winners list for the first.

Starting the season, the Warner-led side suffered two defeats in a row. They turned things around for a while and won seven games out of their next eight clashes. However, once again, things went south for them as they lost three of their last four games to end the league stage on a negative note. They made it to the third position to play the eliminator.

In the eliminator, SRH faced Kolkata Knight Riders. Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad did not get off to a great start as they lost both of their opening batters for run-a-ball knocks. Moises Henriques played a decent knock before Yuvraj Singh and Deepak Hooda struck some lusty blows to provide some impetus to the innings. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick among the KKR bowlers, having picked up three wickets. The bowlers from SRH were right on the money in the second innings as they picked up four KKR wickets, having conceded only 69 runs. Manish Pandey and Suryakumar Yadav bailed the Knight Riders out with a 46-run stand; however, once the partnership was broken, SRH raced to victory in great fashion.

In Qualifier 2, SRH met the Gujarat Lions (now defunct). Batting first, the Lions started off their innings with some struggle thanks to some controlled bowling from the Sunrisers. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ben Cutting picked up a couple of wickets each while giving away only 47 runs in seven overs between them. In the second innings, chasing 163 runs, David Warner put on a one-man show to pull his team to the finals. The Australian batter, opening the innings, scored 93 runs in only 58 balls, hitting 11 fours and three sixes. He did not receive much support in spite of not being out till the end. Bipul Sharma, batting at number eight, provided the finishing touch to the innings and made 27 runs off 11 deliveries.

It was a clash for the ages as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru faced Sunrisers Hyderabad in the finals at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Over 400 runs were scored across both innings in a run-fest clash. Batting first, David Warner carried his form from Qualifier 2 and made 69 runs in only 38 balls. Yuvraj Singh chipped in with a vital knock of 38 runs off 23 balls. Meanwhile, it was Ben Cutting who turned the game on its head, scoring 39 runs in only 15 balls, helping SRH post a score of 208 runs. Cutting continued his fine performance in the second innings and broke the century opening stand between Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli by dismissing the former. Kohli too was dismissed soon after reaching his fifty, which triggered a collapse for the hosts. They lost four wickets while scoring only 24 runs and in the end came short by eight runs to lose yet another final.

David Warner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Mustafizur Rahman played huge roles in SRH winning their only IPL trophy. Warner scored 848 runs in 17 games. Bhuvneshwar and Mustafizur were standout bowlers during the season. While Kumar picked up 23 wickets, the Bangladeshi pacer had 17 scalps to his name.

Mumbai Indians in 2017

Loading table...

Mumbai Indians continued their tradition of winning the IPL trophy in odd years, winning their third title. Once again, Rohit Sharma led them to the trophy, becoming the first captain to win the IPL three times.

Once again, the Mumbai Indians started off their campaign with a loss in the first match against Rising Pune Supergiant (now defunct). They bounced back strongly after the early defeat and won six games in a row before they were defeated once again by RPSG. Their second defeat was followed by another three wins, which included a super over victory over the Gujarat Lions (now defunct). They ended the league stage on a sour note, winning only one of their last three games, but still topped the points table with 20 points.

In Qualifier 1, MI faced RPSG, a team that had defeated them twice already in the season. Batting first, the Supergiant did not get off to the best of starts. They lost a couple of wickets with only nine runs on the board before Ajinkya Rahane and Manoj Tiwary bailed them out of trouble. The duo shared an 80-run stand and reached their fifties. Coming at number five, MS Dhoni played a fiery knock, scoring 40 runs off 26 deliveries to set a target of 163 runs for MI. In reply, the Rohit-led side started off on a poor note as well and lost half of their side for 75 runs. In spite of Parthiv Patel scoring a fifty, no other batter could show any support from the opposite end, which led to them losing the clash.

MI clashed with Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier 2 in a match where they dominated right from the get-go. Bowling first, Jasprit Bumrah and Karn Sharma provided the early inroads into the KKR batting lineup. Mitchell Johnson picked up a couple of wickets while the right-arm leg spinner ended with a four-wicket haul. Chasing a meagre total of 108 runs, MI won the game despite losing three quick wickets. Krunal Pandya remained unbeaten and scored 45 runs to seal the victory for his side.
For the fourth time in the season, Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant clashed in the biggest game of IPL 2017, the final. Batting first, MI started on a bad note as they lost seven wickets with only 79 runs on the board. However, Krunal Pandya, the last recognised batter in the lineup, remained not out till the last ball of the innings and scored 47 runs in 38 balls. Chasing a target of 130 runs, RPSG started brilliantly and had scored 71 runs when they lost their second wicket. But the bowlers from the Mumbai Indians applied a great squeeze after Ajinkya Rahane’s dismissal. Mitchell Johnson and Jasprit Bumrah picked up five wickets before the ever-important run out came on the last ball. With four runs required to win off the final ball, Daniel Christian flicked the ball to deep square leg, and the two batters ran two runs before Washington Sundar was run out in an attempt to run a third. The Mumbai Indians won their first game against RPSG that season by one run.

Krunal Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah were the most valuable players for MI in 2017. Krunal scored 243 runs in addition to picking up 10 wickets. Meanwhile, Bumrah picked up 20 wickets in the season.

Chennai Super Kings in 2018

Loading table...

After serving a two-year ban in 2016 and 2017, the Chennai Super Kings bounced back in style by winning their third trophy in 2018. The team was banned along with the Rajasthan Royals due to the involvement of team officials in a betting scandal. MS Dhoni, who was removed from captaincy by RPSG in the previous season, returned at the helm to lead the men in yellow to the trophy.

In their first two games after returning to the IPL, CSK faced two tough teams, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. The Dhoni-led side won both of the clashes. After the two wins to begin the season, it remained a mixed rest of the tournament for the yellow army. They lost to Kings XI Punjab before registering a three-match win streak. In the second half of the league stage, they won only four of the seven games to end up in second position.

Sunrisers Hyderabad and CSK clashed in Qualifier 1. Batting first, SRH lost a few early wickets and found themselves six down with 88 runs on the board. However, Carlos Brathwaite scored 43 runs off 29 deliveries to bail his side and push them to a score of 139 runs. Even though CSK was chasing a small target of 140 runs, Faf du Plessis had to do all of the hard work alone. The South African batter opening the innings scored 67 runs in 42 balls and remained unbeaten to see his team through to the finals. The second-highest score in the innings was 22 runs from Suresh Raina.

The two teams clashed once again in the finals. This time around, it was a much better batting effort from SRH in the first innings. The skipper, Kane Williamson, scored 47 runs in 36 balls before Yusuf Pathan changed the course of the innings with a powerful cameo. Yusuf played an unbeaten knock of 45 runs off 25 deliveries to provide the finishing touches to the innings alongside Carlos Brathwaite. In reply, it was again a one-man show from a CSK opening batter. Unlike Qualifier 1, it was Shane Watson who played a match-winning knock. He became only the second player to score a century in an IPL final. The Australian batter scored 117 runs in 57 balls to chase down the target of 179 runs. The second-highest run scorer in the innings was once again Suresh Raina with 32.

Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu were the standout performers during the season for the Super Kings. Watson scored 555 runs and picked up six wickets as well. Rayudu was their highest run-getter with 602 runs.

Mumbai Indians, for the fourth time in a row, won the IPL title in an odd year. Rohit Sharma’s MI overtook MS Dhoni’s CSK and became the team with the most IPL trophies.

The season for the three-time champions started on a negative note. They lost two of their first three games against Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab. In their next eight games, MI won six clashes and lost both times to the Rajasthan Royals. Ending the league stage, the Rohit-led side won two of the final three games to finish at the top of the points table, including a super over against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Qualifier 1 featured the two arch-rivals as the Chennai Super Kings hosted the Mumbai Indians. It was a poor batting performance from the hosts as they were restricted to only 131 runs in the first innings, thanks to some controlled bowling from Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya. The two spinners picked up three wickets and gave only 35 runs in their eight overs. The two MI opening batters were dismissed cheaply, however, Suryakumar Yadav showcased his brilliance playing an unbeaten knock of 71 runs to chase down the total in the penultimate over.

It was yet another MI vs CSK final at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The clash went down to the last wire. Batting first, no batter from the Mumbai Indians managed to score a fifty, but Kieron Pollard turned back the clock and was once again a thorn in CSK’s flesh. The West Indian all-rounder scored 41 runs in only 25 balls to provide a much-needed finish to the first innings. Like he had done in 2018, Shane Watson was once again playing a one-man knock to get CSK to the title. He scored 80 runs in 59 balls but did not receive much support from the opposite end as the MI bowlers continued to build pressure on the rest of the batters. Jasprit Bumrah and Rahul Chahar, in their eight overs, gave away only 28 runs while picking up three wickets. Watson was run out in a dramatic final over. CSK needed two runs to win on the final delivery when Lasith Malinga bowled a slower yorker delivery to trap Shardul Thakur in front of the stumps and win MI their fourth IPL trophy.

Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah were the most important players for MI in 2019. The pace-bowling all-rounder scored 402 runs and also took 14 wickets. Bumrah, on the other hand, picked up 19 wickets in the season.

Mumbai Indians in 2020

In 2020, the Mumbai Indians became only the second team after the Chennai Super Kings to successfully defend their title. The Rohit Sharma-led side became the first team to win five IPL titles. It was one of the best teams assembled in the history of the IPL as they cruised through every challenge pretty easily.

Once again, the season started on a poor note for MI as they lost two of their first three games, including a super over defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. They won the next five games on the trot. The second half of the league stage produced mixed results for them as they won three of their last six games.

In the first Qualifier, MI clashed with DC and won the game in a one-sided manner. Batting first, the Mumbai Indians scored 200 runs. Quinton de Kock, opening the innings, scored 40 runs in only 25 balls before Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav struck crucial fifties. Hardik Pandya finished the innings in style by scoring 37 runs in only 14 balls. Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah blew away the DC top-order, with the first three batters being dismissed for ducks. Apart from the 71-run stand between Marcus Stoinis and Axar Patel, there were not many contributions from the rest of the batters. MI won the clash quite comfortably by 57 runs.

In the finals, the two teams clashed once again in the final. Jayant Yadav was brought into the team to tackle the left-handed batters of DC. On his third ball in the final, he got rid of Shikhar Dhawan. Once again, the top order of Capitals was blown away as they lost three wickets with only 22 runs on the board. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant provided a much-needed restraint and shared a 96-run stand before the latter was dismissed. MI restricted DC to 156 runs in the first innings. It proved to be a slightly easier chase for the eventual champions. Rohit Sharma scored 68 runs at the top of the order before Ishan Kishan, with a knock of 33 runs in 19 balls, sealed the win for his team.

Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult were the two spearheads for the Mumbai Indians during the season. Throughout the 13th season of the IPL, the two pacers provided important breakthroughs. Both combined picked up 52 wickets, with Bumrah leading the way with 27 scalps to his name.

Chennai Super Kings in 2021

Chennai Super Kings won their fourth trophy in 2021. It was a stop-start season because of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The first leg of the tournament was held in India before it was shifted to United Arab Emirates.

CSK started the season with a loss in the first game against Delhi Capitals. They bounced back to winning ways with a five-match winning streak. A loss against the Mumbai Indians closed their first leg of the tournament. The second leg of the tournament was played after more than four months. The Super Kings won their first four games in the UAE before losing three on the trot to end the league stage.

In Qualifier 1, CSK faced off against Delhi Capitals, led by Rishabh Pant. Batting first, DC got off to a mixed start in spite of losing Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel for a combined total of 18 runs. Prithvi Shaw played a blinder of a knock, scoring 60 runs in only 34 balls. Skipper, Pant with an unbeaten half-century and Shimron Hetmyer provided the required finishing touches to the innings. In reply, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa struck fifties to get the chase off to a flier. Loss of some quick wickets meant that MS Dhoni, for the umpteenth time in his career, had to finish the clash. The CSK skipper scored 18 runs off six deliveries to win the clash in the final over.

In the final, CSK met with a resurgent KKR, which had done incredibly well in the second leg of the tournament. Batting first, the Super Kings put up a great all-round batting performance. Faf du Plessis scored 86 runs off 59 balls while Gaikwad, Uthappa, and Moeen Ali chipped in with knocks of 30-odd runs to set KKR a target of 193 runs. Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer strung together a 91-run stand for the first wicket. However, once the stand was broken, KKR collapsed. From 91-0 at one point, they were reduced to 125-8. All CSK bowlers picked up wickets, with Shardul Thakur claiming a three-fer. Despite some lower-order hitting, Dhoni’s men won the clash by 27 runs.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis were the most consistent players for the Super Kings. Gaikwad, who won the Orange Cap, scored 635 runs, only two more than his opening partner du Plessis, who ended the season with 633 runs next to his name.

Gujarat Titans in 2022

Loading table...

Gujarat Titans created history in 2022 as they etched their name in the IPL winners list in their debut season. Apart from the Rajasthan Royals, who won in the inaugural season, it was the first time a team won the IPL in their first year. Hardik Pandya, who left the Mumbai Indians, led GT to the title.

Playing their first season, the Titans got off to a good start, having won eight of their first nine games. The end of the league stage saw them take the foot off the accelerator. GT only managed to win two of their last five league games; however, they still managed to top the points table.

In Qualifier 1, GT met with the Rajasthan Royals. Batting first, RR got off to a great start courtesy of Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson. Buttler scored 89 runs in 56 balls, while Samson made 47 runs off 26 balls. Rashid Khan, despite being wicketless, was the pick among the bowlers, giving away only 15 runs in his four overs. In reply, Wriddhiman Saha was dismissed for a silver duck. Shubman Gill and Matthew Wade played a couple of 35-run knocks before Hardik and David Miller sealed the win. Pandya scored 40 runs in 27 balls, but it was Miller who struck the killer blow, scoring 68 runs in only 38 deliveries.

The two teams met once again in the finals. Once again, it was RR who batted first, but a great bowling effort from the skipper, Pandya, and the rest of his bowlers meant that the Royals were restricted to a score of only 130 runs. It proved to be a walk in the park for the Titans, in spite of losing Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade for single-digit scores. Gill scored 45 runs, while Pandya and Miller contributed with a couple of knocks in the 30s.

Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Mohammed Shami were the lynchpins of GT’s title-winning run. Pandya scored 487 runs and picked up eight wickets as well. Rashid took 19 wickets in addition to scoring 91 runs. Meanwhile, Shami claimed 20 wickets and was GT’s highest wicket-taker.

Chennai Super Kings in 2023

Loading table...

Chennai Super Kings equalled Mumbai Indians and got their name written in the IPL winners list for the fifth time in 2023. MS Dhoni returned to lead CSK and once again won them the title.

It wasn’t the best of starts for the Super Kings as they lost two of their first four games. They won their next three games in a row before losing two in a row. One of their matches was a no-result, which meant that even after winning three of their last four league stage games, they ended up coming second to the Gujarat Titans.

The hosts, CSK, were put in to bat first by the Titans. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway, opening the innings, provided a great start to Qualifier 1. While Gaikwad scored 60 runs off 44 balls, his opening partner made 40 in 34. There were not many runs scored by the other batters as every GT bowler was among the wickets. In reply, Deepak Chahar picked up an early wicket in the second innings before the CSK spinners got into their groove. Apart from Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan, who scored 42 and 30 runs respectively, no GT batter could play a substantial knock, which resulted in their loss. Chahar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Matheesha Pathirana picked up a couple of wickets each in the second innings.

The final was played between the same two sides at the Narendra Modi Stadium in a two-day affair. It was a closely contested one that went down to the last wire and into the wee hours of the next day. Batting first, the Gujarat Titans posted a huge score of 214 runs thanks to a 96-run knock from Sai Sudharsan. There was a rain interruption which reduced the second innings to 15 overs, and the revised target for CSK was 171 runs. Gaikwad and Conway once again provided a great start to the team with the bat in hand. Thanks to a few quick wickets before Ambati Rayudu scored 19 off eight balls, the game was held in balance. MS Dhoni was dismissed for a golden duck, which brought Ravindra Jadeja to the crease. The left-handed batter scored 15 off six balls, which included a four and a six on the final two deliveries to win the clash dramatically.

Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad made the most contribution in CSK, getting their names into the IPL winners list for the fifth time. Jadeja scored 190 runs as well as picked up 20 wickets. Gaikwad, opening the innings, scored 590 runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024

Loading table...

Kolkata Knight Riders, after a gap of 10 years, got their name into the IPL winners list. Interestingly, Gautam Gambhir, who had led them to two titles in 2012 and 2014, returned to the franchise as a mentor in the same year they won their third trophy. It was Shreyas Iyer who led the team on the field and won his first IPL title. Like the MI team from 2020, the KKR unit in 2024 was one of the best teams in the history of the competition.

The season for KKR started on a bright note with three wins on the trot, including two away from home. They lost three of their next five games, including one against Punjab Kings, where they were on the wrong side of the highest ever chase in the history of the IPL. After losing to PBKS, they won four games in a row before their last two league stages clashes were washed out.

In Qualifier 1, KKR faced Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mitchell Starc, who did not have the best of the tournament leading up to the playoffs, stepped up. The left-arm pacer for KKR dismissed danger man, Travis Head, on the second ball of the clash. SRH lost four wickets with only 34 runs on the board before Rahul Tripathi and Heinrich Klaasen stitched together a 62-run stand for the third wicket. However, once that stand was broken, SRH crumbled and were bowled out for 159 runs. In reply, KKR marched along the target quite smoothly. Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer scored fifties as they chased down the target in the 14th over.

In the finals, the two teams met once again, and again it was a dominating performance from the Knight Riders. Batting first, SRH once again lost early wickets, and unlike Qualifier 1, this time around, there was no partnership to bail them out. They were bowled out for a score of 113 runs, the lowest in the history of IPL finals. Venkatesh Iyer once again struck a half-century while Rahmanullah Gurbaz, at the top of the order, scored 39 runs.

Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, as they have done so often in the past, were the standout performers. Narine, opening the innings, scored 488 runs and picked up 17 wickets. Russell scored 222 runs at his usual high strike rate and with the ball took 19 wickets.

Teams with Most IPL Titles in History

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the two teams with the most IPL titles in history. Thanks to extraordinary performances and great leadership, both teams have had their names written into the IPL winners list five times.

Led by MS Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings won the title for the first time in 2010. They became the first team to defend their title in the following year in 2011. Following a two-year ban, CSK won the title again in 2018. Dhoni led them to the title again in 2021 and 2023.

Mumbai Indians, captained by Rohit Sharma, have also won the trophy five times. They first won the trophy in 2013 in Rohit’s first season as the skipper. MI got their name into the IPL winners list again in 2015, 2017, and 2019. In the following year, the Rohit-led side became only the second team to defend their title.
