Harmanpreet Kaur is the most capped player in the WT20Is, having played 181 games in the format. The Indian skipper has been one of the mainstays of the Indian batting unit since the retirement of Mithali Raj. Dani Wyatt follows Kaur on the list with 178 games for the England Women’s team in the shortest format.
Suzi Bates, with 177 matches to her name, ranks third on the list. Like Kaur, Bates has been leading the New Zealand team for a while. Ellyse Perry, unarguably one of the greatest players in the sport, has played the fourth-most WT20I games. The Australian all-rounder has played 168 matches. She is followed by Alyssa Healy, Nida Dar, and Smriti Mandhana, who have played 162, 160, and 152 games, respectively.
Smriti Mandhana is one of the best players in WT20Is. The left-handed batter has played more than 150 games in the shortest format and is one of the most prolific run-scorers for the women in blue. But, it is yet to be seen how she ranks against other players to have played the same number of games.
In comparison to Smriti, Harmanpreet is not as prolific when it comes to run scoring. The Indian skipper, in spite of playing more matches, has scored fewer runs at a lower average. However, the Indian skipper contributes to the field as a bowler as well. In 62 innings, Kaur has taken 32 wickets while maintaining an economy of close to six runs per over.
Moreover, given that the rate of scoring remains low in women’s cricket, Kaur’s economy does not make a huge impact. Even after being a more than useful part-time bowler, Harmanpreet has been outperformed by Smriti Mandhana comfortably.
Dani Wyatt, with 178 games to her name, has played the third-most matches in WT20Is. The English batter has been around the national team for more than 15 years. Like Smriti, the 34-year-old has been a prolific run-scorer. However, she has lacked the consistency that Mandhana has showcased in her career.
In 155 innings, Wyatt has scored 20 fifties, while the Indian batter, on the other hand, has scored 31 half-centuries despite playing 10 fewer innings. Like other players on the list, Wyatt contributes with the ball in hand as well. However, she has stopped bowling in the last few years and has not picked up a wicket in the format in the last 10 years. The lack of bowling in the last few years, along with missing consistency with the bat, makes Dani a less useful player than Smriti in the format.
Suzie Bates holds the record for scoring the most runs in WT20Is. The 37-year-old has scored 4,716 runs and is the only batter to score more than 4,000 runs in the format. Over the last couple of years, her average has dipped in the format. Apart from the averages of the two batters, where the difference is negligible, it is the huge gap between the strike rates that makes Smriti rank better than the Kiwi. Bates strikes at a rate of 108, meanwhile, Smriti has a strike rate of 124.15.
However, unlike Harmanpreet Kaur, Suzie is much better as a bowler. In 93 innings, the right-arm medium pacer picked up 60 wickets with an economy of 6.57 runs per over. This means that despite the glaring difference between the strike rate of the two players, Bates contributes to her team’s success equally, if not more, thanks to her bowling skills.
Ellyse Perry might well be the best player ever to play women’s cricket. The Australian all-rounder has often showcased that she has the ability to perform at the same level as two players. In 168 games in the shortest format, Perry has scored 2,173 runs at a strike rate of 116. While the 34-year-old has not scored a century in the format, she has played some vital knocks for her side.
Apart from her batting, Perry has also taken 126 wickets in the shortest format. She has an economy of less than six runs per over, which makes her a multi-dimensional player in the sport. There is no doubt that Ellyse contributes more to the Australian side than Smriti does to the Indian team.
Alyssa Healy follows her compatriot, Ellyse Perry, on the list for playing the most WT20I matches. The wicketkeeper batter has played 162 games in the format for Australia. She is a prolific batter and also has the fifth-highest individual score to her name in the format. Healy has scored 3054 runs, averaging close to 25. While her average is lower than usual, Healy is used as an explosive batter by Australia at the top of the order.
Like most of the other players on the list, Healy contributes with her wicketkeeping skills as well. Behind the stumps, she has taken 65 catches and has afflicted 63 stumpings. Even Healy’s small contributions can help Australia achieve monumental heights in women’s cricket, given the nation’s stronghold in the sport.
Among players with at least 150 WT20Is, Nida Dar is the only player who contributes as a bowler. The Pakistani bowling all-rounder has already taken an indefinite break from international cricket, and it looks like she has retired with 160 games in the format.
Having picked up 144 wickets in the format, the right-arm off-spinner holds the record for picking up the third-most wickets.
With the bat in her hand, Nida Dar has pretty ordinary stats. The right-hander has scored 2091 runs in 141 innings, striking at slightly better than run-a-ball pace. Her average of 17.87 suggests that she has struggled with consistency. Given that Smriti opens the innings, she has much more impact than Nida when it comes to contributions to their team’s success.
Just before playing her 150th game, Smriti Mandhana scored her maiden international century. She was leading the Indian team in the game, with Harmanpreet Kaur missing the game. The left-hander’s performance in the game gave India a 1-0 lead in the series, which the Indian team eventually won.
With the ODI World Cup approaching and the T20 World Cup next year, it is pretty crucial that Mandhana finds her top form. Mandhana will play an important role as the Indian women’s team searches for their first title.
