Mumbai Indians Women’s team etched their name in the WPL winners list by winning the inaugural season of the competition. The team was led by Indian skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur. The eventual champions won six out of their eight games in the league stage and finished second with 12 points. They were ranked behind Dehli Capitals women even after have made the same points owing to their slightly weaker Net Run Rate (NRR).
However, having a strong group of players including the likes of Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Amelia Kerr meant that MI Women remained a stong contender in spite of finishing second. They defeated the UP Warriorz soundly in the Eliminator by a margin of 72 runs to reach the final. In the final, MI Women defeated Delhi Capitals who had finished first by seven wickets.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women’s team was the second entrant into the WPL winners list. They won the tournament previous season and were successfully led by Smriti Mandhana. Like their men’s team, the Women outfit too made it to the playoffs barely after finishing third on the points table. Finishing third meant that they had to face the 2023 champions, Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. RCB won the do-or-die game against the inaugural season champions on the last ball of the game. It was a tight game which was eventually won by Manadhana-led side by five runs.
In the final, they faced Delhi Capitals who were making their second appearance in the championship match. RCB started poorly in the final as Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning raced to 64 runs without a loss of wicket. However, what followed the incredible opening stand was a dramatic collapse. DC was bowled out for 113 runs which was chased down by RCB in the final for the loss of only two wickets to win the title.
