In 2024, the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) started the Delhi Premier League (DPL) to really highlight local players and give a boost to Delhi's domestic cricket vibe. By creating this platform, Delhi is making a move to compete with other Indian regions that regularly host major T20 franchise tournaments. In the debut season, six teams played, each named after a major city area: Central Delhi Kings, East Delhi Riders, South Delhi Superstarz, Purani Dilli 6, West Delhi Lions, and North Delhi Strikers. Then, in the second season, they added Outer Delhi Warriors and New Delhi Tigers to the mix.
Every game is held at Arun Jaitley Stadium, and the league decided to follow an IPL-like structure with group phases and playoffs to make things more competitive and fun for the fans. Delhi Premier League has successfully brought together marquee players and promising talents from the region. The 2024 player auction attracted 270 athletes, while the 2025 event featured notable stars such as Priyansh Arya, Harshit Rana, Nitish Rana, Ayush Badoni, Prince Yadav, and Simarjeet Singh.
In an exciting finale, the East Delhi Riders edged out South Delhi Superstarz to win the inaugural title. The DPL really showcased new talent too, like Priyansh Arya, who topped the runs chart, and Simarjeet Singh, who took the most wickets that season. The DPL keeps shining as a lively platform for both men and women cricket players, providing Delhi's grassroots talent a great stage and helping to nurture future stars.
The 2025 Delhi Premier League has eight teams including Central Delhi Kings, East Delhi Riders, New Delhi Tigers, North Delhi Strikers, Outer Delhi Warriors, Purani Dilli 6, South Delhi Superstarz, and West Delhi Lions, all competing for the top spot. Teams are split into two groups of four by the league. Each team plays a double round-robin within their own group and faces each team from the other group once. By the end of it, each team will have played 10 matches in the league phase. The IPL top players in DPL are Ishant sharma , Priyansh Arya , Ayush Badoni , Harshit Rana , Nitish Rana , Suyash Sharma, Digvesh Rathi.
The league wraps up with the top four teams moving on to the playoffs. The knockout stage includes Qualifier 1, an Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and then the big final on August 31, 2025. If needed, there's a reserve day set for September 1. The Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi hosts all the matches, offering an electrifying environment and cutting-edge features.
The Delhi Premier League, or DPL, has quickly become a top-tier T20 cricket event. It’s got solid support from big corporations and well-known owners running the teams, which really amps up its prestige. Each team is tied to a specific district in Delhi, so they carry a lot of local pride and identity.
In the Delhi Premier League (DPL), the focus is on developing homegrown Delhi talent—overseas players aren’t part of the game. All participating cricketers must hail from Delhi or its cricket ecosystem, similar to other regional T20 leagues in India. The focus is on promising players from different age brackets, including U-16, U-19, and senior squads, all available for selection and auction.
In the DPL, every game is a classic T20 match, one innings of 20 overs per team. The whole match tends to run for roughly three hours, thanks to strict time control measures in place. Innings are limited to 90 minutes per team, including any tactical breaks. Teams need to begin the 20th over on time to avoid over-rate fines.
During the game, the powerplay rules follow a standard pattern seen in big T20 leagues. The first 6 overs, only two fielders can be outside the 30-yard circle. From overs 7 through 20, this number goes up to a maximum of five outside the circle. A bowler can only bowl up to 4 overs in this match, compared to 10 overs in a 50-over game.
The first-ever Delhi Premier League (DPL) wrapped up in 2024 with an exciting final at Arun Jaitley Stadium. The East Delhi Riders are the first champions ever, narrowly beating South Delhi Superstarz by 3 runs in an epic showdown. The East Delhi Riders took the field first and managed a solid score of 183/5 in their 20 overs. A big part of that was Mayank Rawat's amazing unbeaten 78. The South Delhi Superstarz came close but fell slightly short, finishing their innings at 180/9 after 20 overs. With a half-century from Tejaswi Dahiya and a late push by Digvesh Rathi, the team remained competitive but were unable to cross the finish line.
