This victory marked a significant milestone for the Dragons, who had previously reached the finals in 2018 and 2019 but fell short against Siechem Madurai Panthers and Chepauk Super Gillies, respectively. The Dindigul Dragons were led by Ravichandran Ashwin, the veteran Indian off-spinner and a cricketing icon known for his tactical acumen and all-around skills. Ashwin’s leadership was instrumental in guiding the Dragons to their first TNPL title. The tournament was set to begin on July 5 to August 4, 2024, featuring 8 teams facing each other across 32 matches in the round robin stage, followed by the Playoffs. The Dragons started the season with a win but later faced a few upsets before getting a grip on the tournament again. Throughout the season, R Ashwin and the squad, Shivam Singh, Baba Indrajith, and Varun Chakaravarthy showcased the competitive intensity and emerging talent became the highlight of the show.
The 2024 TNPL final, held on August 4, 2024, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, saw the Dindigul Dragons face off against the Lyca Kovai Kings in a highly anticipated rematch of the opening game’s teams. The Kovai Kings, led by Shahrukh Khan, were aiming for their third title (having won in 2022 and 2023), while the Dragons, under Ashwin’s leadership, sought their first.
Lyca Kovai Kings batted first after winning the toss but struggled against Dindigul’s disciplined bowling attack. A collective effort by the Dragons’ bowlers, led by Ashwin, restricted Kovai to a modest 129 for 7 in 20 overs. The Dragons’ fielding and strategic bowling changes, including contributions from Varun Chakaravarthy and Sandeep Warrier, ensured Kovai couldn’t build significant partnerships.
In response, Dindigul Dragons chased the target with confidence, reaching 131 for 4 in 18.2 overs to win by six wickets with 10 balls to spare. R Ashwin hit a match-winning knock of 46 runs off 52 balls and became the Man of the Match, lifting the Maiden TNPL trophy with his squad in the 2024 TNPL.

Over its eight seasons from 2016 to 2024, Chepauk Super Gillies emerged as the most successful franchise, clinching four titles (2017, 2019, 2021, and a shared 2022 title with Lyca Kovai Kings due to a rain-abandoned final). Their victories, under captains like Rajagopal Sathish and Kaushik Gandhi, showcased consistent performances, with players like G Periyaswamy and Narayan Jagadeesan(highest run getter) shining.
In 2018, Siechem Madurai Panthers claimed their sole title, defeating Dindigul Dragons by 7 wickets, powered by Arun Karthik’s explosive batting and R Karthikeyan’s bowling. The TUTI Patriots clinched the inaugural Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) title in 2016, marking a dominant campaign in the Twenty20 tournament organized by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Under the captaincy of Dinesh Karthik, Patriots entered the TNPL inaugural season with a victory, playing their opening match against Chepauk Super Gillies at MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Throughout the league stage, the Patriots displayed consistency, finishing third with a strong record. They lost only a few matches, leveraging their robust squad, which included international stars like Karthik and emerging talents like Washington Sundar.
Patriots skipper Dinesh Karthik, a seasoned wicketkeeper-batter, was a vital asset of the team. His leadership and explosive batting, particularly in the final, were pivotal. Karthik’s 55 off 26 balls in the final, including a hat-trick of sixes, electrified the crowd and set a daunting target. Players like Kaushik Gandhi, and Abhinav Mukund contributed with the bat while Lakshmipathy Balaji and Ganesh Moorthi, a left-arm spinner, handled the bowling side very well. Young all-rounder Washington Sundar also contributed significantly with bat and ball throughout the tournament and later became one of the top cricketers in the IPL.
In the TNPL 2016 final on September 18, 2016, at MA Chidambaram Stadium, the Patriots faced Chepauk Super Gillies. Electing to bat, they posted a formidable 215/2, powered by Mukund’s unbeaten 82, Gandhi’s 59, and Karthik’s 55. In response, Chepauk failed to chase the huge target, scoring only 93 in 18.5 overs. Thanks to Ganesh Moorthi’s sensational opening over dismissed four batsmen, including captain R Satish and U Sasidev, for a duck. Balaji also contributed with his Balaji’s 2/8, ensuring the Chepauk’s ultimate defeat. It was a huge victory in the history of the TNPL with the Patriots lifting the inaugural Trophy by a triumph of 122 runs over Chepauk at the iconic Chennai’s MA Chidambaram stadium.
The Chepauk Super Gillies won the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2017 title, exacting revenge after their 122-run loss to TUTI Patriots in the 2016 final. Representing Chennai, the Super Gillies claimed their maiden TNPL championship in the second edition of the tournament. The leader of the Chepauk Rajagopal Sathish, a seasoned all-rounder, his calm leadership and crucial contributions with bat and ball were instrumental.
The Super Gillies kicked off their 2017 campaign on July 22, 2017, against Karaikudi Kaalai (now Tiruppur Tamizhans) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Chose to bat first, they posted a formidable 195/4, driven by H Gopinath’s explosive 82 off 46 balls and Thalaivan Sargunam’s steady contribution. The triumph over Karaikudi Kaalai set the tone for their dominant league phase, where they won six of seven matches, losing only to TUTI Patriots in Qualifier 1. After defeating Lyca Kovai Kings in Qualifier 2, they earned a rematch with the Patriots in the final, showcasing their ability to bounce back.
In the TNPL 2017 final, held on August 20, 2017, at MA Chidambaram Stadium, the Super Gillies faced the unbeaten TUTI Patriots. The Patriots, led by Dinesh Karthik, won the toss and elected to bat, posting 143/8. Abhinav Mukund top-scored with 41 off 38 balls, but CSG’s spinners, including Sai Kishore and Sathish, maintained the scoreboard while restricting the scoring.
In the chase of 144, the Super Gillies started slow and steady, reaching only 46/1 after eight overs. Gopinath’s 50 off 38 balls kept them on track, but at 93/4 in the 16th over, the chase looked somewhat difficult. Then it was Sathish and Vasanth Saravanan (23* off 10 balls) who came to help hit boundaries to minimize the gap. Saravanan hit 16 off the final three balls, including a six, to secure a six-wicket victory in 19 overs (145/4). Saravanan’s clutch performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
Finally, they secured their maiden title after taking revenge on the Patriots. The 2017 TNPL title was a milestone for the Chepauk’s most successful dynasty, paving the way for future titles in 2019, 2021, and 2022.
The Siechem Madurai Panthers won their maiden Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) title in 2018, a remarkable turnaround for a team that had not secured a single victory in the previous two seasons. Representing Madurai, the Panthers, under new ownership by Siechem Technologies, showcased resilience and skill to clinch the third TNPL edition.
They started their season against Dindigul Dragons and faced a 75-run loss at the NPR College Ground, Dindigul. Despite this setback, the Panthers rebounded strongly, winning six of their seven league matches, including a historic first TNPL win against defending champions TUTI Patriots.
Their consistent performances saw them finish second on the points table, behind Dindigul. In Qualifier 2, they defeated Lyca Kovai Kings by 7 wickets, with Arun Karthik’s fifth fifty of the season securing their final berth.
In 2018, Damodaran Rohit led the Panthers as captain, and his leadership stabilized the team, though his batting contributions were modest. Arun Karthik, the wicketkeeper-batter, was the standout performer, scoring 472 runs in 10 matches at an average of 78.66 and a strike rate of 153.74, the highest in a single TNPL season. His unbeaten 75 in the final was pivotal. Shijit Chandran supported with a crucial 38* in the final, forming a match-winning partnership. Abhishek Tanwar led the bowling with 15 wickets, including a 4/30 in the final, earning him the Player of the Series award for his 15 scalps in 2018.
Once again Panthers faced the Dragons in the 2018 TNPL Final on l on August 12, 2018, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This time, Madurai showcased their determination and restricted Dindigul to 117/10 in 19.5 overs, choosing to bowl first after winning the toss.
Chasing 118, Madurai stumbled early, losing three wickets for 2 runs in the first over to M Silambarasan (3/23). However, Arun Karthik’s unbeaten 75 off 50 balls (4 fours, 4 sixes) and Shijit Chandran’s 38* off 49 balls forged an unbroken 117-run fourth-wicket partnership, leading Madurai to 119/3 in 17.1 overs for a 7-wicket victory. The Panthers celebrated their first and only TNPL title so far in the tournament's history.
The Chepauk Super Gillies claimed their second Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) title in 2019, cementing their status as a dominant force in the tournament. The Chepauk commenced their 2019 TNPL journey with a thrilling match against Dindigul Dragons at the NPR College Ground.
Batting first, they posted 169/7, powered by Ganga Sridhar Raju’s 81 off 49 balls and Kaushik Gandhi’s contribution. Their bowlers, led by G Periyasamy (3 wickets) and R Sai Kishore, restricted Dindigul to 154/8, securing a 15-run victory.
This solid start brought back their confidence in the tournament. In the league stage, they won five of seven matches, finishing second on the points table. Despite a loss to Dindigul in Qualifier 1, they bounced back in Qualifier 2, defeating VB Kanchi Veerans by 5 wickets, with Harish Kumar’s all-round heroics, to reach the final.
It was the third time that Chepauk Super Gillies reached the Final, facing Dindigul, last season's runner-up. Dindigul, batting first after winning the toss, posted 126/9, with C Hari Nishanth (39) and R Vivekanandhan (25) leading a shaky batting effort. Chasing 127, Chepauk lost early wickets, slumping to 28/3.
Kaushik Gandhi’s 55 off 39 balls and a 45-run stand with Uthirasamy Sasidev (20) brought them close. Harish Kumar’s unbeaten 32 off 15 balls, including 2 sixes, sealed a 12-run victory at 131/5 in 18.4 overs. Their consistent batting and disciplined bowling under the wings of Kaushik Gandhi made it possible for the Super Gillies.
The Chepauk Super Gillies secured their third Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) title in 2021, reinforcing their dominance in the tournament. Despite challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Super Gillies showcased exceptional consistency and clutch performances to claim the championship.
In the opening match Cheapuk, faced the iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans on July 19, 2021, at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Once again Kaushik Gandhi led the squad in the successful 2021 TNPL season.
Batting first, they posted 149/8, driven by N Jagadeesan’s 52 off 40 balls and Kaushik Gandhi’s 43. Their bowlers, led by R Sai Kishore (3 wickets) and Sonu Yadav (2 wickets), restricted Tiruppur to 132/7, securing a 17-run victory.
In the league stage, Chepauk won five of seven matches, finishing second on the points table. After losing to Ruby Trichy Warriors in Qualifier 1, they bounced back in Qualifier 2, defeating Dindigul Dragons by 8 wickets, with S Radhakrishnan’s unbeaten knock of 82.
In the Final match, Chepauk and Trichy Grand Cholas encountered each other on August 15, 2021, at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Trichy, batting first after winning the toss, posted 157/6, led by Adithya Ganesh’s 66* and Nidhish Rajagopal’s 55. Sai Kishore (1/24), Sonu Yadav (2/32), and Manimaran Siddharth (2/27) kept the scoring in check.
Chasing 158, Chepauk started strongly with Jagadeesan (40 off 32) and Gandhi (40 off 34) building a 76-run opening stand. After both fell, Sasidev (23) and Radhakrishnan (22*) kept the runs coming. Harish Kumar’s quick 13* off 7 balls sealed a 7-wicket victory at 159/3 in 19.5 overs. In the post-match ceremony, Sonu Yadav earned the Man of the Match award for his all-round contribution (2 wickets, 13 runs) and S Radhakrishnan emerged as a breakout star, scoring 295 runs, including an unbeaten 82 in the playoffs, earning him the Player of the Series award. This victory, their third in five TNPL editions, solidified their legacy as the tournament’s most successful franchise.
The sixth season of the 2022 TNPL has a joint winner of the Lyca Kovai Kings and Chepauk Super Gillies. This marked Lyca Kovai Kings’ first TNPL title and Chepauk Super Gillies’ fourth, reinforcing their dominance in the tournament.
On June 23, 2022, the Lyca Kovai Kings, led by Shahrukh Khan, began their campaign against the iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans at the Indian Cement Company Ground, Tirunelveli.
Batting first, they posted 151/6, with Sai Sudharsan scoring 65 off 42 balls and Ganga Sridhar Raju contributing 33. Their bowlers, led by Abhishek Tanwar (3 wickets) and S Ajith Ram, restricted Tiruppur to 132/7, securing a 19-run victory.
The Kings dominated the league stage, finishing atop the points table with six wins in seven matches. They defeated the Nellai Royal Kings in Qualifier 1 to reach the final.
Then there’s TNPL champion Chepauk Super Gillies, with their seasonal captain Kaushik Gandhi, who faced Nellai Royal Kings on June 25, 2022, at Tirunelveli in the opening match.
Batting first, Nellai scored 184/7, but Chepauk chased it down in 19.5 overs, reaching 187/5, with N Jagadeesan’s 75 and S Radhakrishnan’s 49. R Sai Kishore (2 wickets) led the bowling. Chepauk won four of seven league matches, finishing third. They beat Nellai in a one-over eliminator (9/1 vs. 10/1) in Qualifier 2 to reach the final.
The TNPL 2022 final on July 31, 2022, at SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore, was washed out by rain. Lyca Kovai Kings, batting first after losing the toss, posted 138/9 in 17 overs (reduced due to rain). Sai Sudharsan’s 65 off 42 balls anchored the innings, but Sandeep Warrier’s 4/29 and Sai Kishore’s 2 wickets restricted them. Chepauk, chasing 139, reached 14/2 in 4 overs (S Radhakrishnan 9*) when rain halted play.
With a minimum of five overs needed for a result, the match was abandoned, and both teams were declared co-champions. Sandeep Warrier earned Man of the Match for his bowling. Sanjay Yadav (Nellai Royal Kings) was named Player of the Series for his 452 runs and 6 wickets. Where Kovai celebrated their first title, Chepauk once again maintained their dominance in the tournament.
The previous season’s champion, the Lyca Kovai Kings struck again and won their second Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) title in 2023, defending their 2022 crown (shared with Chepauk Super Gillies) in a dominant campaign during the seventh TNPL edition. Led by M Shahrukh Khan, Kovai Kings played the season-opening match against iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans on June 12, 2023, at SNR College Cricket Ground.
Batting first, with J Suresh Kumar’s 47 off 29 balls and Sai Sudharsan’s 41, they posted 179/7. Their bowlers, led by M Shahrukh Khan, scalping 3 wickets, and Jhathavedh Subramanyan, restricted Tiruppur to 109/9, securing a 70-run win.
The Kings dominated the league stage, winning six of seven matches, with their only loss to Nellai Royal Kings in a last-ball thriller. Topping the points table, they advanced to Qualifier 1, defeating Dindigul Dragons by 30 runs, with U Mukilesh’s 44* and Shahrukh’s bowling, to reach the final.
Kovai’s captain, M Shahrukh Khan, played an important part in the team’s overall success. The seasonal performer contributed with both bat and ball, the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 TNPL with 18 wickets from 9 matches, with an average of 10.58. Sai Sudharsan amassed runs consistently, including 123* off 56 balls against Tiruppur, the season’s highest score. Where wicketkeeper and batter Suresh Kumar, Atheeq Ur Rahman, and Mukilesh strengthen the batting side. Jhathavedh Subramanyan, the leg-spinner, took 13 wickets, including a four-wicket haul in the final, while Manimaran Siddharth chipped in with tight spells.
In the 2023 TNPL Final on July 12, 2023, at the Indian Cement Company Ground, Tirunelveli, the Kovai Kings faced the Nellai Royal Kings. Electing to bat, Kovai posted a mammoth 205/5, driven by Suresh Kumar’s 57 (33 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes), Mukilesh’s unbeaten 51 (40 balls), and Atheeq’s 50 (21 balls, 5 fours, 3 sixes). To defend their score, Kovai Kings outmuscled Nellai by taking early wickets. With Jhathavedh Subramanyan’s four-wicket haul and M Shahrukh Khan’s three wickets, Kovai Kings crushed the opposite team and ruled the ground with a 104-run triumph over Nellai. Kovai Kings is the only franchise following the Chepauk that secured the title consecutively.
