The West Indies cricket team is currently going through a very bad run of form. They already suffered a humiliating 3-0 Test series and 5-0 defeat in the T20I vs Australia. Following that, they had to surrender against the Pakistan team as well in the 3 match T20I series that they lost 2-1.
Even though Pakistan took the 3-match T20I series, both teams have been pretty poor lately in the 50-over game.
The West Indies team will be led by their prolific wicketkeeper batter Shai Hope. The side also features players like Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Keacy Carty and youngster Jewel Andrews among the batters. Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales, Gudakesh Motie and Jediah Blades are the bowlers with all-rounders like Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde and Roston Chase also in the squad.
The visiting Pakistan cricket team has brought in players like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Naseem Shah, all of whom missed the T20I part of the series.
The side will be led by wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan. The batting unit features players like Abdullah Shafique, Saim Ayub, Salman Agha, Mohammad Haris etc. As for the bowling unit, Shaheen Afridi will be joined by Naseem Shah, Hasan Ali with Mohammad Nawaz and Faheem Ashraf as all-rounders options.
Neither team has been doing well in the 50 overs format of the game. In the last 5 One Day International (ODI) matches, the hosts for this match, West Indies, has won only one match, that was against the Ireland cricket team a few weeks back. As for the visitors Pakistan cricket team, they have in-fact not won a single match out of their previous five games. Their most recent ODI win dates back to February 2025 when they won the 2nd ODI and have since not won a single match.
There have been a grand total of 137 head-to-head matches played between the West Indies and the Pakistan cricket team. It is the Maroons who have a slight advantage in this case with 71 wins for them while Pakistan have won 63 matches in total. The remaining 3 matches have no result.
The pitch at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad is known for being sluggish and turning quite a bit in ODIs, so players really need to settle in before trying to hit aggressive shots. The stats show an average of 207 in the first innings and 148 in the second, which points to a surface that often benefits bowlers, especially spinners, as the match progresses. The pitch has a nice bounce and some help for fast bowlers at the start, but it gets slower as the game goes on, making stroke play challenging.
West Indies: Shai Hope (C), Brandon King, Keacy Carty, Evin Lewis, Jewel Andrews, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Justin Greaves, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales.
Pakistan: Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan (C), Abdullah Shafique, Hasan Nawaz, Salman Agha, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali.
The West Indies cricket team's 28 years-old batter Keacy Carty has been in good form in the ODI format. He scored 278 runs in the 3 matches against Ireland prior to which he scored 154 runs in 3 matches vs England and 161 runs in 3 matches vs Bangladesh. Against a top quality bowling attack like that, Carty's form in the format could be significantly useful.
Shamar Joseph, the 25-year-old right-arm fast bowler for the West Indies, seems like he's the real deal for the Caribbean team. Although he hasn't been very successful in the limited opportunities, he was in prolific form in the recent series vs Australia as he picked 22 wickets in 5 Test matches. He did fairly well in the T20I series taking 5 wickets vs Pakistan in 3 matches.
The Pakistan cricket team's aggressive opening batter Saim Ayub is going to be the batter to keep an eye on in the upcoming ODI series. In the previous ODI series vs South Africa he scored 235 runs in 3 matches including 2 centuries. He displayed great batting in the T20I series earlier as he scored 130 runs including two half-centuries.
Pakistan cricket team's star pace bowler Shaheen Afridi didn't enjoy a great performance in the T20I series. In these circumstances, all eyes will be on Naseem Shah, who is making his return to the team. Naseem is one of the top pacer bowlers in the Pakistan cricket team's set-up and heat done well on a consistent basis in this format.
After the Pakistan cricket team won the T20I series 2-1 earlier this month, it is back to square-one as both teams go again in the 50 overs game now. Both sides have struggled in this format.
However, after their T20I series win, Pakistan is considered the early favourite for this match. They now have a much stronger team than their T20I squad with the addition of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah to their arsenal. Pakistan have a much better batting and bowling attack quality wise compared to that of the West Indies cricket team. Hence we also backed Pakistan to win the first ODI match.
