Many media outlets got the official letter which was written on the 29th May where it notified to the BCB’s chief executive officer and in the letter also the NSC had mentioned the section 13.2(b) (4) of its act to validate the cancellation of Faruque as the representative on the BCB board. Faruque was in the position as the BCB chief for a period of nine months and eight days. Earlier when the Bangladesh interim government asked Faruque to step down he refused to give up the position.
On August 21 last year, Faruque was elected by the nine BCB directors as the president. He was also nominated as one of the two directors from the sports ministry’s quota in the BCB board. Now former captain of Bangladesh Aminul Islam to take Faruque Ahmed as the BCB President. The other directions who gave the vote towards no-confidence motion was Mahbubul Anam, Kazi Inam Ahmed, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, Fahim Sinha, Salahuddin Chowdhury, Iftikhar Rahman, Manjur Alam and Swapan Chowdhury. Akram Khan who was the other board director didn’t sign the letter.
Faruque was at loggerheads with the directors for a long time. The directors are equally angry with Faruque as they called his leadership as autocratic and accused him of violating the constitution of the BCB. In the NSC letter the directors said Faruque removed former coach of the Bangladesh cricket team Chandika Hathurusingha last October without even informing the board of directors let alone any consultation. They also accused Faruque for not doing his work with efficiency while approving the BPL franchises Durbar Rajshahi and Chittagong Kings in the 2024-2025 BPL season.
The BCB directors have labelled some serious allegations against Faruque Ahmed. In the letter, it’s written “ Capable professionals have been overlooked while loyalty and personal allegiance have been rewarded. He is neither working for the development of Bangladesh cricket nor respecting the spirit of domestic governance.”
One of the BCB directors told a few media outlets that Faruque has not informed the rest of the board directors by delaying the formation of the new sub-committees. Also he pointed out that they lost faith in Faruque because he is only focused on running the BCB elections later this year. On the other hand, Faruque has said he will take legal action against the BCB directors after they signed the no-confidence letter. Faruque told the Bengali daily Kaler Kantho “ I will speak to my lawyer about the letter. I might take legal action. There is no mention of no-confidence motion in the BCB constitution, so I don’t think it matters. I have seen the letter. They have accused me of wrongdoings that they have done themselves. I laughed out loud seeing the letter.”
The first Test centurion of Bangladesh Aminul Islam is the new President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board after the previous President Faruque Ahmed is sacked. The BCB has announced this decision on Friday and confirmed to several media outlets about this development. As a new chapter begins for Animul, he will be the 16th board President of Bangladesh cricket. After his retirement, Aminul has previously worked as an administrator for the Asian Cricket Council and the International Cricket Council.
Talking to the media yesterday, Animul said “ Our respected directors of the Cricket Board have elected me as the Board President. I received that call from the Honorable Sports Advisor. I was honored. Now, I have received an even bigger responsibility. We want to take Bangladesh cricket forward. I believe cricket is not played by just eleven players- it’s played by the whole of Bangladesh. I hope we all play as a team. We’ve done it before- that’s why we’ve played Test cricket for 25 years, won the U19 World Cup, and seen our women’s team win the Asia Cup. We can aim even higher. We have the potential to achieve more. We are the Bangladesh team, and we all support our team.”
In a country like Bangladesh, politics and cricket go hand in hand. Since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the country is going through a lot of instability. After the Awami League government fell, Bangladesh Cricket Board’s position was not stable. Now Aminul Islam has the opportunity to serve Bangladesh cricket.
Aminul has played 49 ODIs and 13 Tests for Bangladesh. Aminul has stated his main aim is to hold a transparent election in the board. Aminul has worked previously for the ICC as a development officer and he would like to use that knowledge and experience for the development of Bangladesh cricket. “ Our number one priority is to spread cricket. You know when we gained Test status, we promised the ICC that we would make cricket decentralised by forming a regional governing body. The framework is ready, I will present it to the board tomorrow. There will be three success factors. There will be a robust coaching system across the country. We will try to form a competitive cricket structure from where we can find out the natural raw talents”. Aminul said.
