CHENNAI – May 12, 2026: In a strategic move to reinforce their squad ahead of the critical playoff race, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially signed Karnataka all-rounder Macneil Hadley Noronha as a replacement for the injured Ramakrishna Ghosh. The five-time champions have formally approached the BCCI for approval to finalize the signing, as confirmed by CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan.
The signing comes as CSK continues to grapple with a relentless injury list during the 2026 campaign. The 28-year-old Ramakrishna Ghosh saw his tournament end abruptly after suffering a foot fracture during a dream IPL debut against Mumbai Indians on May 3. Ghosh is just one of several high-profile casualties for the Super Kings this season:
MS Dhoni: The talismanic former captain has been sidelined since the tournament opener with a persistent calf strain.
Khaleel Ahmed & Ayush Mhatre: Both were ruled out early with season-ending injuries.
Nathan Ellis: Unavailable from the start, with his replacement, Spencer Johnson, only recently becoming fit for selection.
While CSK previously brought in Akash Madhwal to replace Mhatre, they have yet to announce a replacement for their lead Indian seamer, Khaleel Ahmed.
The 24-year-old Noronha arrives in Chennai on the back of an exceptional domestic run, particularly in the 2025 Maharaja Trophy. Representing the Mangaluru Dragons, Noronha was instrumental in their title-winning campaign, showcasing the dual-threat capability that CSK prizes.
Batting Firepower:
Noronha established himself as one of the cleanest strikers in the tournament, amassing 253 runs in 13 games. His aggressive approach is reflected in a formidable strike rate of 148.82, which included a tally of 19 sixes.
Bowling Utility:
Beyond his batting, Noronha proved to be a tactical asset with his off-spin. He claimed 10 wickets at a disciplined economy rate of 7.44. His most significant contribution came on the grandest stage the final against Hubli Tigers where he returned match-winning figures of 2 for 25. Following his stellar league performance, he was fast-tracked into the Karnataka squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he featured in three matches.
With the IPL 2026 standings tightening up, CSK’s decision to opt for an all-rounder suggests a desire for greater flexibility in their lower middle order. Noronha’s ability to clear the ropes and provide four overs of tidy off-spin makes him a versatile tool for skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, especially on the traditionally spin-friendly surfaces of Chepauk. The Super Kings have staged a remarkable comeback in the second half of the season, and the inclusion of fresh, hungry talent like Noronha could provide the necessary impetus to push for a record-breaking sixth title.
