Mitchell Starc was named the player of the match for his brilliant bowling in the last three overs. He dismissed Nitish Rana in the 18th over to bring the hosts back into the game. However, it was the 20th over where Starc produced his magic. He had to defend nine runs in the over and nailed all six deliveries to give away only eight runs to push the game to the Super Over.
Starc once again stepped up to bowl the Super Over and in spite of bowling a no-ball with his back foot, the Australian pacer gave away only 11 runs.
Axar Patel has had a few tough outings with the bat in hand in the season so far. However, the DC skipper got back into his groove at the best possible time. The hosts desperately needed to kick things off with the bat in hand when Axar came into the attack. He scored 34 runs in only 14 balls, hitting four fours and a couple of sixes.
With the ball in hand, his figures might not showcase the impact he had. The DC skipper took his first wicket of the season, dismissing Riyan Parag. He would have gotten a second wicket as well, but Tristan Stubbs at long-on failed to complete a catch to dismiss Nitish Rana.
Tristan Stubbs, like Axar Patel, played a brilliant cameo with the bat in hand. The South African batter came to the crease with the scoreboard reading 97 runs for the loss of three wickets in 12.4 overs. He played a hard-hitting knock, scoring 34 runs in only 18 balls, smashing two fours and sixes each.
But it was his one-ball knock in the Super Over that won the game for the Capitals. With five runs needed to win in three balls, the right-handed batter perfectly read Sandeep Sharma’s mind and struck a six on the slower-on bouncer to take DC to the top of the table.
Mitchell Starc’s figures do not tell the whole story about the impact the Australian pacer created on the match. He picked up his first wicket by dismissing Nitish Rana with an unplayable yorker. However, he was required to defend nine runs off the last over. The left-arm pacer gave away only eight runs to push the game to the Super Over. He nailed all six of his deliveries in the final over.
He came on to bowl the Super Over as well. Starc bowled a no-ball with his back foot touching the popping crease. He was still right on the money, and even though it was two run outs that ended RR’s Super Over, Starc created enough pressure for the batters to take that extra risk with doubles.
Nitish Rana played a crucial knock for the Royals in the second innings. The left-handed batter scored an important half-century. He was fortunate enough to survive on a couple of occasions. However, Rana took the attack on the DC bowlers and scored 51 runs in only 28 balls, hitting six fours and a couple of sixes. Rana’s dismissal in the 18th over proved to be the difference between a win and a loss for the visitors.
It was a mixed performance in the first innings. Rajasthan Royals controlled the innings for the first 15 overs. It was a sluggish track at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. After Jake Fraser-McGurk and Karun Nair were dismissed cheaply in the power play, Abhishek Porel and KL Rahul steadied the ship for the hosts with a 63-run partnership for the third wicket.
However, the acceleration from the Capitals came in the last five overs, led by skipper Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs. Both batters scored 34 runs each. Axar struck four fours and a couple of sixes in his 14-ball knock. While the South African batter smashed two fours and sixes each in the 18 balls he faced in the first innings.
For the Royals, Jofra Archer continued his fine form with the new ball. He accounted for Fraser-McGurk’s dismissal in the third over. However, the two Sri Lankan spinners, in spite of picking a wicket each, remained expensive, going for 78 runs in their eight overs.
Nitish Rana played a fantastic knock for the Rajasthan Royals. The left-handed batter scored an important fifty for the Royals and had almost sealed the win for the Royals. He scored 51 runs in only 28 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. Before Rana, it was Yashasvi Jaiswal who scored a fifty to set up the chase. The RR skipper also played an important knock before he was injured. Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer provided the finishing touch to the innings. The Indian wicket-keeper batter scored 26 runs off 17 deliveries while Hetmyer remained unbeaten to score 15 runs in the nine balls he faced.
For Delhi Capitals, the left-arm bowlers were right on the money. Skipper, Axar Patel, after playing a great cameo with the bat in hand in the first innings, picked up his first wicket of the season. Kuldeep Yadav too picked up a wicket, but bowled an expensive spell by his standards. However, it was Mitchell Starc who pushed the game to the Super Over. The Australian pacer was tasked to defend nine runs off the final over. He gave away only eight runs as he nailed his yorkers.
Sanju Samson, after scoring 31 runs in 19 balls, walked off the field in the last over of the powerplay. The RR skipper was looking in a great touch and in for a big knock, but injured himself while attempting to play a cut shot against Vipraj Nigam. The opening batter injured his rib, which proved to be a crucial point in the game.
Rajasthan Royals batted first in the Super Over and scored 11 runs, but they would feel they left at least a couple of runs out there. Riyan Parag and Yasahsvi Jaiswal were run out as the Royals did not even face their full quota of six balls.
Delhi Capitals, batting second in the one-over face-off, sent KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs to bat. Rahul struck a four on the second ball before running a double on the first. He ran a single on the third ball to give Stubbs the strike. With five runs needed to win off the last three balls, the South African batter struck a six to seal the win for the hosts.
