This Thursday in New Delhi, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) mega-auction is happening, and it's a big deal. The five teams are ready to beef up their rosters for the fourth season, so expect some tough bidding. Two hundred seventy-seven players are up for grabs, but with only 73 spots open, teams need to be smart about who they pick.
The auction features 194 Indian players, with 52 having played for the national team and 142 seeking their big break. They're all vying for 50 spots. Plus, 66 seasoned international players and 17 newcomers from overseas will be battling it out for the remaining 23 slots. With so much talent up for grabs and intense competition, teams will probably have to think carefully about their player selections, especially when targeting those valuable all-rounders. Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma, in particular, is expected to draw a lot of attention and start a bidding war.
Ex-India player Veda Krishnamurthy thinks Deepti Sharma will be in high demand at the next auction. She's a proven match-winner. Veda said Deepti always performs well and brings balance, calm, and experience to any team. Veda noted that Deepti Sharma has shown she can win matches in past WPL seasons with her great batting and bowling. She also won Player of the Tournament recently at the Women’s ODI World Cup. Because of this, she'll be in high demand at the auction, and all teams will be keeping an eye on her.
Deepti has really stepped up her game these past few seasons. She’s a solid batter in the middle, a brilliant bowler who takes wickets without giving away runs, and a fantastic fielder. It’s rare to find someone who can do it all so well. Tournaments often come down to how you handle pressure, and she's great under pressure. Her calm attitude and ability to finish games make her a real difference maker.
Anjum Chopra, India's ex-captain, talked about how much Deepti could be worth. She thinks quite a few teams might really go after her when it's auction time. Gujarat Giants should think about getting Deepti Sharma in the mega-auction. Delhi Capitals might also want her because she's an Indian player who is good at both batting and bowling. UP Warriorz might also be interested in her, like Gujarat and Delhi, said Chopra. Deepti's skills could really change how these teams play, especially since they need a new strategy.
How the auction plays out will depend on team budgets and Right To Match cards.
UP Warriorz has the most money to spend at ₹14.5 crore and the most RTM options. This puts them in a good spot to try and get Deepti.
Gujarat Giants aren't far behind with ₹ nine crore and three RTMs, giving them some wiggle room to bid big.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru has ₹6.15 crore and one RTM card.
Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals kept a lot of their players, but they each only have ₹5.7 crore and no RTM cards left. If they want Deepti, they'll have to bid aggressively.
At the auction, 19 players have the highest base price of ₹50 lakh, 11 are at ₹40 lakh, and 88 are at ₹30 lakh, showing just how big and competitive this thing is. Everyone expects Deepti to be a top pick, so her price could be a guide for later bids. As we get closer to the WPL, everyone's eyes are on Deepti Sharma. She's not just a great cricket player; she represents what the WPL is all about these days. She’s a reliable all-rounder who can really change the game and lead a team far in the competition. Because all the teams want players who are well-rounded and experienced, expect a big fight to get Deepti on their side.
Everyone's watching the auction closely, and it looks like Deepti Sharma might just become one of the priciest players in WPL Season 4.
