Despite the England cricket team's 22-run victory in the 3rd Test vs India, England have been docked two points from their WTC 2025-2027 points tally.
A statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC) said as per Article 16.11.2 of the World Test Championship playing conditions, a team is penalised one point for each short over, or after time allowances were taken into consideration.
With the points deduction, England's cricket team's points tally in the World Test Championship points table has dropped from 24 to 22 out of a possible 36 points after three matches. This has reduced the points percentage from 66.67% to 61.11%.
As a result of the same, England has slipped in the WTC points table from 2nd place to 3rd position behind Australia and Sri Lanka.
In addition to the points deduction, England players have also been fined 10% of their salary as per the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, as stated in the ICC official statement. According to the rules, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over if their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
England cricket team captain Ben Stokes pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the sanctions proposed by the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees member Richie Richardson.
The final day of the third Test match between India and England was an exciting event. Both teams had won a match each before the 3rd Test at Lord's, London.
England and India both scored 387 runs in their first innings. For England, Brydon Carse and Jamie Smith both struck half-centuries, while Joe Root got a century. Jasprit Bumrah took 5 wickets for Team India in this inning.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul scored a century for Team India in the first inning. Both Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja also contributed with 74 and 72 runs respectively.
India's bowlers delivered an exceptional performance, dismissing England for a total of 192 runs. Siraj and Bumrah each took two wickets, while Washington Sundar was the most successful with four wickets.
Team India was considered the favourite at this stage of the game unless the Indian team lost 4 wickets for 58 runs while chasing 193 runs by the end of day 4. It was really messy on day five. Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Washington Sundar all fell within a brief span of time.
Soon, Nitish Kumar Reddy also departed as India lost 8 wickets for 112 runs. However, it was a valiant fight from Ravindra Jadeja, who tried his best alongside the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, but eventually, Team India were all out for 170 runs as England won by 22 runs.
The victory in this match allowed England to establish a 2-1 lead in the series after the first three matches. The next two matches of the series will be played at the Emirates Old Trafford and Kennington Oval in Manchester and London, starting from 23 July and 31 July respectively.
