The hard-hitting batter and often overlooked off-spin bowler represented Australia in 149 ODI matches, including what many believe to be one of the greatest one-day innings ever played. During the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan, Maxwell walked in when Australia was struggling at 7 for 91.
Despite the pressure and suffering from severe cramps in the intense heat, he scored a stunning 201 runs off 128 balls, turning the match around and leading his team to an incredible win. Australia later won the World Cup, defeating tournament favourites India in the final held in Ahmedabad.
"I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how the body was reacting to the conditions. I had a good chat with (Chair of Selectors) George Bailey, and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward," he told the 'Final Word Podcast'.
"We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'." Maxwell had recently returned from an IPL stint with Punjab Kings that was cut short by a broken finger.
Congratulating Maxwell for his career, former captain and current chair of selectors George Bailey said, Glenn will be remembered as one of the most exciting players in one-day cricket. He played a big role in helping Australia win two World Cups. His natural talent and skills are truly special. He always brought great energy on the field, was a better bowler than many realized, and stayed at the top level for a long time. Most of all, what really stood out was his love for the game and his dedication to representing Australia. Luckily, he can still contribute a lot to Australia in T20s. If everything goes smoothly, he’ll play an important role over the next year as the team prepares for the World Cup.
