Mitchell Marsh was named the player of the match for his incredible batting performance which saw him scoring his maiden century in IPL. The right-handed batter struggled initially and was hit on his body a few times. However, after the power play, once he got his eye in it was almost impossible to stop the Aussie batter. He scored 117 runs in only 64 balls and powered the visitors to a score which was well above par. In his knock, Marsh struck 10 fours and eight sixes.
Mitchell Marsh was at his best at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The Australian batter scored his first century of the Indian Premier League. He had a scratchy start to the innings and was struck in the lower abdomen multiple times in the power play. However, once he got the hang of the pitch, it was almost impossible to stop him. It was the best knock by the Aussie batter in the season. The right-handed batter scored 117 runs in only 64 balls and became the first overseas batter to score a hundred this season. Marsh smashed eight sixes and 10 fours in his knock, hitting the GT bowlers to different parts of the ground.
Nicholas Pooran scored his fifth half-century of the season. The left-handed batter announced his arrival at the crease in great style. He struck a six off the first ball he faced from Sai Kishore. Pooran was amidst all the action thanks to his brute power against the spin bowlers. He smashed his fifth half-century of the season and ended up unbeaten with a score of 56 runs. In his 27-ball knock, the Trinidadian batter smashed four fours and five sixes.
William O’Rourke was the pick among the bowlers from both teams. The Kiwi pacer picked up three wickets and was pretty economical on a night where more than 400 runs were scored across the two innings. He broke the highly successful opening stand, dismissing Sai Sudharsan. However, it was his fourth over that brought the visitors back into the game. In spite of such a high target, Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan had brought GT back in the game. O’Rourke, coming on to finish his spell, picked up a couple of wickets, dismissing Rutherford and Rahul Tewatia.
Shahrukh Khan scored his second fifty and made a valiant attempt to chase down a huge score. The right-handed batter struck crucial boundaries throughout the middle overs. He stitched together a vital stand with Sherfane Rutherford. However, given the target they were chasing, it was going to be a highly difficult task for the two GT batters. He reached fifty in only 22 balls, the fastest for any GT batter this season. The 29-year-old ended up scoring 57 runs in only 29 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes.
It was a wicketless power play for the Lucknow Super Giants. The two opening batters for the visitors carried on with their form from the previous game and gave another great start to the team. The two right-handed batters were struck on their body a few times but stood tall against the might of a great GT bowling unit.
Even though Aiden Markram was dismissed in the 10th over, Mitchell Marsh continued with his hard-hitting prowess. The Australian marched towards his sixth fifty of the season, but he was not done there. He converted the half-century into his first hundred in the Indian Premier League. He struck a few lusty blows against Rashid Khan and welcomed him into the attack with five boundaries on the trot. Even at the fag-end of his innings, Marsh struck a couple of sixes in the 18th over against Prasidh Krishna.
Nicholas Pooran joined Marsh in the middle and once again played a great innings. He was helped by the fact that he entered the innings at the best point in time when the two GT spinners were operating. The left-handed batter struck a six on his first ball, announcing his arrival in the grandest way possible.
It was a mixed power play for both teams. While the Super Giants got an important wicket of Sai Sudharsan, the hosts struck a few boundaries to not let the asking rate get away from their grasp. Shubman Gill, after looking like a million bucks for the better part of his innings, was dismissed for a score of 35 runs thanks to a stunning catch from Shahbaz Ahmed. It was a disappointing night for all three top-order batters from GT. Jos Buttler, too, was dismissed for a score of 33 runs.
The LSG bowlers had done something that no team had done before this season. For the first time, a bowling unit was able to get Gill, Sudharsan, and Buttler inside 10 overs. Prior to this clash, one of these three batters had stayed at the crease for at least the 15th over.
William O’Rourke was the best bowler for the visitors. The Kiwi pacer picked up three wickets and was highly economical in his quota of four overs. He picked up crucial scalps and gave away only 27 runs in his four overs to seal the win for the Super Giants.
For the Titans, Shahrukh Khan and Sherfane Rutherford were the biggest positives. There were a lot of questions raised about the lack of game time for the middle-order batters. Shahrukh scored a magnificent half-century and had taken GT pretty close to the target. Rutherford’s dismissal turned out to be a huge blow.
