Although India has played in two finals before, they will receive almost the same amount of money that was given to Australia for winning the WTC 2023 Final. After beating India in 2023, Australia was awarded USD 1.6 million. In the upcoming final, the winner between South Africa and Australia will be awarded USD 3.6 million, while the runner-up will be given more than USD 2.1 million.
India failed to qualify for the final for the third consecutive time, largely due to a few crucial setbacks, including a clean sweep (0-3) at home against New Zealand and a 1-2 series defeat on their tour of Australia. As a result, India ended the league stage with a points percentage of 50%. South Africa finished at the top with 69.44%, followed by defending champions Australia with 67.54%.
South Africa and Australia qualified for the final, which will be played on June 11 at Lord's, after finishing first and second in the points table. Australia will become the first team to get a chance to defend the WTC title. The team had defeated India in the final two years ago to win their first WTC trophy.
The WTC Final, between Australia and South Africa, will decide who takes home a prize of USD 3.6 million, which is more than double the amount that was given to New Zealand (2021) and Australia (2023) for winning the earlier finals.
Under the captaincy of Pat Cummins, Australia will be hoping to defend the WTC title, which was secured by defeating India in the final held at The Oval in June 2023. On the other hand, Temba Bavuma’s South Africa will be aiming to end a 20-year wait for an ICC trophy and make history by winning their first WTC title. During their journey to the final, South Africa had won only one of their first five Tests, but remained unbeaten in the next seven.
Their place in the final was confirmed after they topped the WTC standings with a 69.44% point percentage, having won eight matches and lost three out of 12. Australia, the defending champions, finished second with a 67.54% point percentage, securing 13 wins and four losses in 19 matches. Their spot in the final was sealed after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was retained, ending a 10-year wait.
The prize money distribution for the World Test Championship 2023-25 has been announced, with the winners, either Australia or South Africa, set to receive USD 3.6 million. The runners-up will take home USD 2.16 million, while India, finishing third, will receive USD 1.44 million. New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, and Pakistan will be awarded in descending order of their final positions, with Pakistan receiving the least USD 480,000. This prize distribution highlights the ICC’s effort to reward top-performing teams based on their final standings.
