With retirement from ODI cricket seemingly on the horizon, a move that would officially close the chapter on a golden generation, Cricket Australia is reportedly preparing a farewell tribute for the duo, anticipating this might be their final tour of the country. While nothing is confirmed, strong speculation suggests that both Kohli and Rohit could bring their international careers to a close following the 2027 ODI World Cup.
"This might be the last time that we get to see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma play in our country. And if that is the case, who knows, it might not be, but if it is, we wanna make sure we give them a great send-off and a reflection of the incredible contribution they've made to international cricket," Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said.
Cricket Australia is expected to cover the India series to continue persuading the BCCI to permit Indian players to participate in the Big Bash League (BBL). The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) has a strict policy of not allowing contracted players to participate in overseas leagues unless they cut all ties.
That’s definitely a discussion we used to keep having with the BCCI. Personally, I would be excited to see Virat Kohli feature in the BBL this year. It would undoubtedly spark significant interest among fans and boost viewership. Right now, it’s not on the cards, but we certainly aspire to explore such opportunities in the future. Across the globe, we’re seeing T20 leagues increasingly attract private investment, and that trend is shaping the direction of the sport. Greenberg said.
We’re seeing similar developments in England with The Hundred, where several IPL franchise owners are now acquiring stakes in the competition,” Greenberg noted. “Here in Australia, it’s important that we keep adapting and finding fresh ways to grow our game. We need to stay receptive to new possibilities and innovative approaches.
