Mohammad Shami is currently not playing any professional cricket but is still in the media headlines. He is in the headlines because of his old case, the allegations made by his ex-wife, Hasin Jahan. Shami’s ex-wife had filed a case against him on the grounds of domestic violence, match-fixing, and dowry harassment. The case started in 2018, and it still hasn’t concluded yet. Now, the latest development has come out regarding this case in which the Calcutta High Court (HC) has ordered cricketer Mohammad Shami to give Rs 4 lakh every month to his ex-wife, Hasin Jahan, and daughter Aaira Shami as maintenance. The HC passed the order on July 01, 2025 (Tuesday) on a plea filed by Hasin Jahan. A bench, including Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, was present in the courtroom, presiding over the proceedings.
According to the order, Hasin Jahan will receive INR 1.5 lakh, and her daughter will receive 2.5 lakh from Mohammad Shami. The court stated: “In my considered opinion, an amount of ₹1,50,000 per month for the wife (petitioner no.1) and ₹2,50,000 for her daughter is considered fair and reasonable to secure the financial well-being of both.”
As soon as the decision came, a lot of debate was going on on social media. On one hand, it underscores the legal and moral responsibility of a husband, even if estranged, to ensure his ex-wife and daughter are financially secure. Given Shami’s stature as an international cricketer, this amount isn’t necessarily disproportionate and aligns with the standard of living they likely maintained during their marriage.
On the other hand, some people say that paying such a large amount feels like a punishment, especially when the marriage is over and both have moved on. But the law does not treat it as a punishment. The law wants to make sure that the wife and child can live with dignity and maintain a reasonable lifestyle.
In the end, fans may feel sorry for Shami and hope his issues don’t take away from his great cricket career. But we must remember that his duties off the field are just as real and serious as his game on the field. By giving a fair maintenance order, the court makes sure justice is done not only in cricket but also in personal life, where it often matters even more.
As we have seen quite a few times on social media that Mohammad Shami is very emotional about his daughter Aaira. We have seen a few videos where he is playing with his daughter. His relationship might not be good with his ex-wife, but he never misses a chance to meet his daughter. He might contribute more to his daughter and look to give all the facilities and expenses a father can give to his daughter.
In addition, the High Court noted that Mohammad Shami may, if he wishes, voluntarily provide more support for his daughter Aaira. Shami can contribute beyond the given amount for his daughter, whether it is for her education or any other facilities.
Mohammad Shami’s ex-wife, Hasin Jahan, went to the Calcutta High Court because she was unhappy with what the District Court had decided. Earlier, in 2023, the District Court had ordered Shami to pay ₹50,000 to his wife and ₹80,000 to his daughter every month. Hasin Jahan’s original ask was of Rs. 7 lakh per month and Rs. 3 lakh per month for her daughter. She was not happy with the decision and approached the High Court for further proceedings. Eventually, she became successful in getting an order where she will receive Rs. 4 lakh (1.5 lakh for herself and 2.5 lakh for her daughter) per month as alimony.
Cricketer Mohammad Shami and Hasin Jahan got married in 2014. Before marrying Shami, Hasin Jahan was a model. She also worked as a cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise. Their daughter, Aaira Shami, was born in 2015. The couple’s relationship went well until some differences came out in public from Jahan’s side. She leveled charges against Mohammad Shami, accusing him of domestic violence, match-fixing, and demanding dowry.. Hasin has also complained about Shami’s family’s behaviour towards her.
Things started to fall apart between Shami and Jahan in 2018. Hasin Jahan also said that the pacer took money from a Pakistani woman and also accused him of cutting off the money she needed to run the household. Due to all the allegations, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) chose to put Shami’s central contract on hold for some time. Although after some time, with all the investigations and processes, the BCCI lifted the hold on his contract.
The board investigated the match-fixing charges and cleared Mohammed Shami’s name. However, in 2019, the court issued an arrest warrant against him for domestic violence and gave him 15 days to come back to India and surrender. Later, the district court put the warrant on hold because it had not sent him a proper summons to appear in court.
Mohammad Shami can keep following the court’s orders and pay the maintenance for his wife and daughter. He can also continue to defend himself in court if there are still legal matters going on. Besides that, he can focus on his cricket career and try to stay away from more controversies, so he protects both his reputation and his future earnings.
Mohammad Shami is at the fag end of his professional career. The team management did not consider him in T20Is. He is not a regular in ODIs. In tests, his fitness is still a concern. He would want to be free of everything and wants to focus on whatever cricket is left in him.
In the last few years, we’ve seen quite a few separations in the cricket world. Hardik Pandya and Natasa Stankovic, Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma, Shikhar Dhawan and Ayesha Mukherjee are just some examples. These cases show that even successful sports stars with fame and money are not free from personal struggles. Cricketers live under constant pressure — from fans, the media, and their busy careers, which can make it hard to balance personal and professional life. In the end, their challenges remind us that they, too, are human, facing ups and downs just like anyone else.
