Pakistan’s Heavy Defeats Trigger Shake-Up in Support Staff

The move came from Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the Champions Trophy, especially the heavy loss to India, which has had a great impact on the team. As per the sources in the cricket board, major changes are likely in the support staff, including the excite of former pacer Aaqib Javed, who currently leads the group.

Pakistan suffered a six-wicket loss to arch-rivals India in Dubai on Sunday. This came after they were beaten by 60 runs in their opening match against New Zealand in Karachi on February 19.

Most Selectors to Be Replaced, Except Aqib Javed

A new and restructured committee will be in charge of picking the national team. Except for Aqib Javed, most of the current selectors are expected to be replaced. Sources also shared that a clear decision has been made about Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan; they may not be part of the T20I squad but could still play in ODIs and Test matches.

Shifts in Pakistan’s Selection Panel

Reliable sources from the PCB revealed that Asad and Azhar have not been playing an active role in picking the team. Aleem is also likely to lose his position. During the recent series against Bangladesh, Asad and Azhar were not part of the final decision-making when the 16-member squad was selected, along with team director Mike Hesson.

At the same time, two former Test players were surprisingly called to a selection meeting in Islamabad to share their views. However, it’s still unclear if they will be involved in future selection processes.

The meeting was attended by Mike Hesson, Salman Ali Agha, Aqib, Aleem, and Hasan Cheema. Sources also said that before the New Zealand series, the PCB held a session where the selectors shared their opinions in front of a mentor to help with team selection.

Former Players Likely Candidates for Pakistan Coaching Role

With Pakistan set to tour New Zealand from March 16 to April 5 for five T20Is and three ODIs, the PCB has now decided to focus on appointing a new permanent coach or coaching staff. Because of preparations for the Champions Trophy, the PCB couldn't give enough attention to hiring a permanent coach earlier. But now, this will become a top priority.

After the way Kirsten and Gillispie stepped down, the PCB may not have many options when it comes to hiring foreign coaches. So, it’s likely they will consider former Pakistani players for the role, the source added.
