In the 3rd Test match, the day-night Test match, being played at the Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, Australia captain Pat Cummins was involved in an exchange with the on-field umpire Nitin Menon.
The entire incident took place in the 24th over of the first inning for the West Indies. John Campbell, a batter representing the West Indies, sprinted for a fast single after playing a soft-handed shot. The ball reached Australia skipper Pat Cummins on mid-off, who hit a direct hit to the stumps.
However, the on-field Nitin Menon didn't send it upstairs for a 3rd umpire check as there was minimal appeal from the Australian fielders as John Campbell had looked to have reached his crease already before the stumps were hit.
It was later shown on replay camera that Campbell’s bat had bounced just before reaching the crease, and had it been referred to the 3rd umpire, the batter could have been run out.
After that, Australia captain Pat Cummins was visibly frustrated. The stump mic caught him saying, “I appealed. Why wouldn’t you just check it out?”
However, this incident didn't do much damage as John Campbell was dismissed 10 overs later after scoring 36 runs off 65 balls as Scott Boland got him LBW out.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that there has been controversy in this series. The first Test match in Barbados was full of controversy, with West Indies Head Coach Daren Sammy also criticising the 3rd umpire Adrian Holdstock for making several wrong calls in that match.
There were several calls made in the 3rd that went against the hosts, including Roston Chase given LBW out despite a clear spike of an edge from the bat on UltraEdge, while Shai Hope was given out caught-behind despite the ball touching the grass.
This continued into Australia’s batting as first Travis Head was not given caught behind despite a clear catch while Cameron Green was adjudged not out, exciting a bat and ball contact during an LBW review, out it was clearly a bat-pad contact.
Australia is currently controlling the game at Jamaica's Sabina Park. The Aussies scored 225 runs while batting first in the first inning, with Cameron Green and Steve Smith missing out on their respective half-centuries.
But they bowled brilliantly to get the hosts West Indies, out for just 143 runs. At the end of day 2, Australia had already lost 6 wickets for 99 runs, with Cameron Green the top scorer with an unbeaten 42 runs. The Aussies have a lead of 181 runs and will look to add more to it as they look to complete a 3-0 clean sweep.
And just like the first two matches, it has once again been the bowlers who have been brilliant. Shamar Joseph picked 4 wickets in the first inning for West Indies, with Jayden Seales and Justin Greaves taking 3 wickets each.
Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins each claimed two wickets, while Scott Boland got three for Australia. Meanwhile, Alzarri Joseph has taken 3 wickets while Shamar Joseph has 2 wickets in the 2nd inning for West Indies. The day 3 action will be another exciting one.
