Josh Inglis was named the player of the match for his incredible batting performance that helped the Punjab Kings seal a vital win. The Aussie batter struck 73 runs in only 42 balls and attacked the best bowlers from the opposition team. His knock consisted of multiple boundaries against the likes of Mitchell Santner, who had been the most economical bowler in the previous game. The right-hander struck nine fours and three sixes in his knock, attacking different bowlers at crucial junctures.
Josh Inglis provided a template on how to play against the likes of Mitchell Santner and the rest of the MI bowlers. The Aussie batter coming in at number three came to the crease when the asking rate was on the up. He attacked Santner, who had conceded only 11 runs in the previous game. The knock came at a crucial time, right after the power play. What made his knock stand apart was how he carried on and batted with a high strike rate in spite of not taking a lot of risks. Inglis ended up with a knock of 73 runs in 42 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes.
Priyansh Arya once again showed all his class in a virtual qualifier match for Punjab Kings. The young batter was quickly off his straps and started by hitting a few boundaries against Trent Boult in the power play. Once the first wicket fell, the left-hander played a second fiddle but was still going at a high strike rate. His century partnership with Josh Inglis sealed the win for the Punjab Kings. Arya scored 62 runs, hitting nine fours and a couple of sixes in his 35-ball knock.
Arshdeep Singh was wicketless for his first three overs, but it was his final over which allowed the Punjab Kings to retain the momentum going into the second innings. While the left-arm pacer gave away 25 runs in the first three overs, Arshdeep returned with an impressive final over where he dismissed Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav and conceded only three runs in the six balls.
Marco Jansen got the ball moving when he took the new ball along with Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm pacer picked up his first wicket while bowling the final over of the power play and broke the opening stand by dismissing Ryan Rickelton. It was a crucial wicket given how the South African had started the innings. His second wicket came in the back-end of the innings, and once again it was a crucial scalp.
Suryakumar Yadav was once again the top scorer for the Mumbai Indians as he carried on with his momentum from the season. The right-handed batter for the 14th time in a row went past the 25-run mark. However, he did not stop there as he scored his second half-century in a row. He could not be on strike for the majority of the last few overs. In spite of remaining at the non-striker end, Suryakumar scored 57 runs in 39 balls, hitting six fours and a couple of sixes.
The two MI opening batters were off to a great start. Ryan Rickelton was the first to get off his straps and consistently smashed the PBKS bowlers to the boundary fence. Rohit Sharma too got going in the fourth over against Harpreet Brar.
In response, Marco Jansen broke the opening stand in the last over of the power play. The rate of scoring dipped for Mumbai after the opening wicket. This was the time when Vijaykumar Vyshak came into the attack. The right-arm pacer was at his best in the initial stages of his spell after being added to the playing XI in this game. He gave away only eight runs in his first two overs and picked up the wicket of Tilak Varma. He returned to bowl his third over, where he dismsised Will Jacks in an expensive over.
Suryakumar Yadav, for the 14th time in the season, went past a score of 25 runs. The right-handed batter was once again the top scorer for the five-time champions as he scored a half-century. He received some great support from Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir. Pandya scored 26 runs in 15 balls while Naman played a quickfire cameo, scoring 20 runs off 12 balls.
Arshdeep Singh bowled a fantastic last over to steal all the momentum from the Mumbai Indians. The left-arm pacer picked up two wickets and gave away only three runs to restrict the five-time champions to a score of 184 runs.
The impressive opening duo of Prabshimran Singh and Priyansh Arya could not provide another great start. Deepak Chahar started his spell with a maiden over before conceding 28 runs in his next two overs. However, Jasprit Bumrah was straight into the wickets column. The right-arm pacer broke the opening stand with only his second delivery in an over that went for only a single run.
It was all Punjab Kings after Bumrah’s over. Both Josh Inglis and Priyansh were right on the money with their shots. Inglis provided the impetus at the start of the partnership which the PBKS desperately needed. He played with an attacking intent and, in the process, played some great shots against the best MI bowlers. What made his knock special was that he remained at the crease till the 18th over.
Priyansh too joined Inglis soon after starting a bit slowly. He played his shots to free his arms during the middle-overs phase. The left-handed batter showed a great deal of maturity and turned the strike over to the Aussie when he was going at a high strike rate before taking off. He reached his half-century in fewer balls than Inglis.
