Sanjog Gupta is one of the prominent names in the Media and Sports broadcasting industry, recognized as a visionary leader. He became the second Indian who hold the top position in the ICC after Jay Shah. His strategic vision, particularly in leveraging digital platforms and innovative technologies like AI-generated highlights, VR streaming, and inclusive features such as Indian Sign Language interpretation, has redefined how sports are consumed in India and beyond.
After graduating in economics from Delhi University, Gupta started his professional career as a journalist. He first joined The Tribune before moving as a correspondent to TV Today Network as a producer-anchor-correspondent. His early career also included stints at Star News India (now ABP News) as an Associate Executive Producer and at NDTV as a News Editor.
Gupta later joined Star India in 2010, where he rose through the ranks to become the Head of Sports at Disney Star India in 2020. Following the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star, he was appointed CEO of Sports and Live Experiences at JioStar in November 2024. In 2025, Gupta accepted the ICC’s offer and became their new CEO on July 7.
Here are details of who Sanjog Gupta is, including his current role, previous career, personal details, education, and personal details.
The selection of Sanjog Gupta as ICC CEO followed an elaborate recruitment process that began in March 2025. The ICC received over 2,500 applications from 25 countries, reflecting the global interest in the role. From this pool, the ICC’s HR & Remuneration Committee shortlisted 12 candidates, ranging from leaders in sports governing bodies to senior corporate executives across various sectors. The Nominations Committee, comprising ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja, ECB Chairman Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva, and BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia, conducted a rigorous evaluation before unanimously recommending Gupta.
This is the second biggest role for an Indian in the International Cricket Council (ICC) after Jay Shah, who became ICC Chairman in December 2024. This shows the growing Indian dominance in the Sport in both India and beyond.
However, this will not be an easy road to follow for the ICC’s seventh CEO, Sanjog Gupta, who has to face the upcoming challenges with booming T20 leagues, sustainability of Test and ODI, and the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, plus the increasing popularity of Women cricket. The global cricket calendar is increasingly congested, with domestic T20 leagues, such as the IPL, SA20, and The Hundred, competing for space alongside international fixtures.
The BCCI and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have already agreed to oppose this new league, lobbying the ICC to withhold endorsement and refusing to issue “no objection certificates” to players. Gupta’s leadership will be crucial in navigating these geopolitical and commercial tensions, ensuring that the ICC remains a unifying force in global cricket. Another key challenge is enhancing the fan experience and expanding cricket’s global footprint.
