Recently, Sourav Ganguly threw a cautious note towards the young Indian captain ahead of the 3rd Test match at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
While celebrating his 53rd Birthday at the Eden Gardens, the former BCCI President spoke to the reporters, where he addressed the Indian cricket team’s stunning performance so far in the first 2 Test matches of the England tour.
He also talked about the brilliant performance from the new Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill. While he praised the performance of the 25-year-old, he also said that there are even tougher challenges to come.
Ganguly said Gill's just started as captain and is currently in his honeymoon phase, “This is the best I’ve seen him bat, and I’m not surprised. He has just become captain; it’s a honeymoon period. But there would be more pressure with time. The pressure will build in the next three Tests,” as quoted by RevSportz.
Ganguly also talked about the deep roots of talent in Indian cricket. He said that every generation will continue to bring talents like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Kohli, and Gill.
“There is so much talent in Indian cricket. In every generation, you will find players. After the great Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar, Dravid, Kumble came and then Kohli, now Gill, Jaiswal, Akash Deep, Mukesh, Siraj… just see the abundance of talent. In every generation, whenever there’s a void, they will come and fill it. I’ve always said that,” he said.
After a great start to the ongoing Test series vs England, Shubman Gill is now on the brink of achieving major milestones in his career. In this series, Gill has scored a total of 585 runs across 4 innings so far.
The Indian captain is now 18 runs short of surpassing former Indian batsman Rahul Dravid’s record of 602 runs from the 2002 India tour of England. Not only that, Shubman Gill could also get past the veteran Don Bradman’s 810 runs record runs in a series tally. Bradman’s record has remained intact since he achieved the total in the 1936-1937 Ashes series. At present, Shubman Gill needs only 225 more runs to set a new record.
The new Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, had a historic outing in the 2nd Test in Birmingham. Gill scored his career-best scores in this match.
In the first inning, Shubman Gill scored 269 runs off 387 balls that helped Team India to score 587 runs in total. He carried on his brilliant form into the 2nd innings as well, as he scored 161 runs off 162 balls. This helped Team India to post a 608-run target for England, which they eventually lost the match 336 runs.
With that win, the series is now on level ground with one win each for either team. The 3rd Test match will be played at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London starting from July 10, Thursday. The following matches will then be played at the Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, and Kennington Oval, London, starting from 23 and 31 July respectively.
