Anil Kumble, India's former captain and famous spinner, has warned the Indian team about Day 3 of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. After the visitors put up a strong first innings total of 489, with Senuran Muthusamy scoring his first Test century (109) and Marco Jansen nearly getting one (93), India finished Day 2 at 9/0, trailing by 480 runs. Kumble said that even though the pitch is still good for batting, India needs to be patient and play smart for the next two days to stay in the game. I think the pitch will wear down a bit more, and the spinners will be important tomorrow. But, it should still be good for batting scoring runs shouldn't be too harsh, Kumble mentioned after the day's play.
Kumble stressed how vital India's batting strategy is, saying the hosts have to win this Test. They've been through six hard sessions, and they’re probably figuring out how to bat for the next two days. If India dominates days three and four, they can start thinking about their second innings, he said. Kumble also talked about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s part in the game, mentioning the young opener needs time to adjust before facing the spinners. Yashasvi has a job to do, but not right away. He needs to get comfortable and adapt to the conditions. If he survives the first 30–45 minutes and handles Jansen's first few overs, we’ll see the Jaiswal we all know. He’ll definitely attack the spinners, Kumble said.
India's bowlers started strong, with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja each grabbing a pair of wickets, and Kuldeep Yadav snagging four. Even so, they couldn't stop Muthusamy and Jansen from forming a partnership that pushed South Africa to a first-innings total higher than any previous losing score in India. Jansen's innings really stood out, as he hit seven sixes, tying the most for a lower-order batter in India. Kumble noted how Jansen's batting changed the game, saying, Marco Jansen totally took the game away from India. He clearly believes in his batting and was great against the spinners. Plus, he attacked the short ball. His partnership with Muthusamy made sure South Africa didn’t just pass 400; they almost hit 500.”
In India's first innings, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal started carefully, holding off some rugged bowling from Jansen and Mulder. Then bad light stopped play early. Kumble pointed out India's main issue: dealing with the spin as the pitch gets worn. Dale Steyn, the ex-South African fast bowler, wasn't happy with India's tactics. He said they stuck to their original plan for too long and should have tried other options. He mentioned India's defensive field settings let South Africa get too comfortable.
With Day 3 just around the corner, Kumble’s reminder stresses staying calm, batting smart, and playing spin well. Spin bowlers are likely to play a significant role, so India needs to bat cleverly, keep the scoreboard ticking, and handle South Africa’s strong bowling and fielding if they want to win this crucial Test.
