Pat Cummins must have created some kind of record with his opening spell. Not only did he pick up a wicket on the first ball of the game, but the right-arm pacer also got a wicket on the first ball of his next two subsequent overs as well. Karun Nair, Faf du Plessis, and Abhishek Porel were among Cummins’ scalps in the power play. While he could not pick up another wicket, the 31-year-old bowled an economical spell, giving away only 19 runs in his four overs.
Jaydev Unadkat, while he might not have picked up as many wickets as Pat Cummins, provided a great supporting hand to his skipper. He was wicketless for his first couple of overs in the power play. However, he gave away only seven runs in his two overs and kept the pressure on the Capitals. He was rewarded with KL Rahul’s scalp in the eighth over. Unadkat’s four overs went for only 13 runs as he was the most economical bowler in the first innings.
Ashutosh Sharma, coming off as an impact sub, proved to be the difference between an embarrassing total and 133 runs in the first innings. He came to the crease at the fall of the sixth wicket with only 62 runs on the board. The 26-year-old not only stabilised the innings but also took his chances as well smashing three sixes in his 26-ball knock. He scored 41 runs with a strike rate of close to 160.
Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a great start in the first innings thanks to their skipper, Pat Cummins. The Australian pacer picked up a wicket off the first ball of the game, dismissing Karun Nair. He picked up a wicket on the first ball of his second and third over as well, sending back Faf du Plessis and Abhishek Porel back to the dressing room. It was a domination with the ball from the hosts as they picked up four wickets in the power play. Soon, the Capitals found themselves five wickets down with only 29 runs on the board. While Cummins was the highest wicket-taker, Jaydev Unadkat in his four overs was pretty economical as he conceded only 13 runs.
The lower middle order batters, Tristan Stubbs and Vipraj Nigam, played fighting knocks before the latter was run out while sacrificing his wicket. Stubbs was then joined by Ashutosh Sharma, who came to the crease as an impact sub. The duo shared a 66-run stand for the seventh wicket and pushed the visitors to a respectable score of 133 runs.
The clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals was called off due to rain in Hyderabad. Even though the rain had stopped around 10:30 PM, the lack of a better drainage system meant that despite all the hard work of the groundsmen and women, the match could not take place with the wet outfield.
Both teams shared a point, which meant that the hosts, SRH, who came into this game desperately needing a win, crashed out of the tournament. DC would consider themselves lucky to walk away with a point, considering that they had scored only 133 runs in the first innings.
