The report further said that the MCA currently has one unnamed grandstand placed above the President’s Box, which remains available for naming rights within the stadium. The North Stand is named after Dilip Vengaskar and Sachin Tendulakar, the West Stand after Vijay Merchant, and the East Stand after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. The media gallery has been named after the late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. In 2022, MCA decided to have a life-size statue of Tendular inside the stadium. However, having as many as eight requests, MCA finds itself in a difficult situation with only limited avenues left to honor.
Former BCCI and MCA office-bearer Ratnakar Shetty says he still wants to have a stand named after 1971 West Indies winning hero Ajit Wadekar, who passed away in 2018, as his contribution to Mumbai cricket has been immense. The MCA decided to name its lounge after Wadekar a few years ago, but his family requested the MCA to name a stand instead of a lounge.
MCA has already named its Indoor academy in Bandra, followed by its upcoming library after Pawar, a BCCI and ICC president. However, some club members demanded that the stadium be named after him inside the stadium.
Many requests have been made from the club to name two footbridges that allow fans to enter the stadium from the east side after Sardesai and Solkar.
After weeks of speculation, it has been announced that the Wankhede Stadium will have a stand named after him. The right-handed batter has tasted some success in the last 10 months or so with the Indian cricket team. While leading the ‘Men in Blue’, Rohit won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. As a player too he has been a stalwart in the Indian colors and has one of the finest records as an opening batter across three formats.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced its decision to name a stand after the current Indian test and ODI skipper. Divecha Pavillion Level 3 will now be called the Rohit Sharma Stand.
Mumbai has given India its fair share of cricketers so it was only fair that alongside Rohit, former Indian Ajit Wadekar and ex-BCCI President, Sharad Pawar too got their names on the stands. Grand Stand Level 3 will be called Sharad Pawar Stand while Grand Stage Level 4 will be named after Wadekar.
The Wankhede Stadium already has stands named after some of the finest players from the city including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Merchant.
