The match was being held in Dharamsala, which is near the Pathankot airbase. Even before the match had started, there were tensions around the country about whether the game would be played or not. When the game was halted, the reason given to the viewers on the broadcast was that one of the light towers went off. However, soon after, multiple light towers went off. The official broadcasters still gave the reason behind the match being called off as a technical glitch at the HPCA Stadium.
Arun Dhummal, IPL Council Chairman, was present at the stadium and a video surfaced where he was requesting the crowd to leave from the stadium.
The decision on IPL 2025 will be taken tomorrow. A meeting between the IPL governing body was held tonight when the match was called off.
The BCCI has also announced a special train to evacuate players from Dharamsala. BCCI vice-president, Rajeev Shukla, said, “ We are organising a special train from close to Dharamsala to bring everybody home safely. As of now, the match has been called off and the stadium has been evacuated. We will take a call on the tournament’s future depending on the situation tomorrow. As of now, players’ safety is utmost important. The match couldn't have continued tonight because of the situation. It wasn’t safe.”
If the marquee tournament is indeed cancelled without playing, there will be no winner of the season. However, the cricket board is yet to take a decision on whether the upcoming matches will be played or not. In the worst-case scenario, when the IPL has to be stopped, the BCCI could postpone the tournament until the situation becomes normal.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the IPL had to be postponed midway through the season. Not only was the tournament completed in the second half of the year, but it was also held in the UAE owing to the rising cases in India. There is a huge possibility that the tournament could once again be postponed for the foreseeable future.
The rise in tensions across the borders of both countries increased after a terrorist attack in the Pahalgam district of Jammu and Kashmir resulted in the loss of 26 innocent lives. In retaliation, the Indian Armed Forces launched a precise attack on terrorist camps in nine locations across POK and Pakistan. Since the air strikes from India in the wee hours of the 7th of May, tensions are riding high in both countries as the two nations have been put on high alert.
