The World Test Championship final is played in the red ball form of the game, means for five days. We have seen many matches in Test cricket, which don’t produce results despite the teams play out for all five days and that too without any interruption of the rains. At the same time, there are some red ball matches also that doesn’t last for all five days because the winner is declared before that.
The Test match between South Africa and Australia at Lords in London will be played like a normal red ball match even if it is an ICC WTC Final in 2025 and if the result is not produced than this all important red ball game will also be considered as no result or a draw. But if the rains play a spoilsport than the International Cricket Council has made a provision for that as well.
If the weather in London isn’t suitable for playing the World Test Championship final starting from Wednesday, the ICC has added a reserved day which is scheduled on Monday, 16th June 2025 and if this final is drawn or tied than according to the ICC rules, both South Africa and Australia will share the WTC trophy in 2025 and they will be named as the joint winners.
ICC Champions Trophy 2002, Final – The 2002 ICC CT 2002 final was played between India and Sri Lanka at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. That final was played for two days according to the reserve day rule of the ICC. This One Day International match had 110.4 overs. But despite that it didn’t declare a winner because of the rains.
On the first day of the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 finals, the home side, Sri Lanka batted first and scored 244 runs for the loss of five wickets. In reply, India started their run chase with 14 runs without loss of any wickets before the rains stormed in and the play was stopped. On the second day, India reached 28 runs for no loss. But the rains came again and the whole match had to abandoned. That’s why India and Sri Lanka had to share the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002.
ICC Champions Trophy In 2017 – India and Pakistan played the CT 2017 final, which the Men in Green won. But the Aussies couldn’t reach that event’s final because of the unpredicted rains in the UK. Australia had to share points with New Zealand and Bangladesh in the group stage. With that, the Aussies lost to the host of that ICC event, England and because of that defeat, the Aussies were out of the ICC Champions Trophy in the 2017 edition in the league stage itself. Now Australia will not want the same thing to happen. They will not be out of the tournament in the WTC Final 2025. But at the same time, they will want a full game so that the trophy is not share. Australians are a different beasts in the ICC tournaments.
