Top Five with Most Man of the Match Awards

  1. AB De Villiers

The South African legendary batsman AB De Villiers is one of the giants of IPL cricket. Known as the Mr. 360 for his unique style of batting, ABD started his IPL journey in the year 2008 with the Delhi Daredevils. He played with the then Delhi Daredevils till the year 2010. He had played some memorable knocks with Delhi Daredevils. However his move to Royal Challengers Bangalore changed his IPL legacy forever. His partnership with another legend, Virat Kohli has won a number of matches for RCB. During his IPL Journey from the year 2008 to the year 2021, AB De Villiers has won 25 Man of the Match Awards which is the highest number of MOM awards in the IPL History.

  1. Chris Gayle

The Jamaican hard hitting opener has got 22 Man of the Match Awards, the second highest Man of the Match Awards in the history of IPL. Gayle made his IPL debut in the year 2009 with the Kolkata Knight Riders but didn’t quite perform in those initial years. Gayle’s prominence came to IPL in the year 2011 when he joined the RCB as a replacement player. He played many outstanding knocks in RCB. In the very first season with the RCB, Gayle won the orange cap by scoring the highest runs in that IPL season where he scored 608 runs. He then followed it up with another Orange Cap in the year 2012 when he scored 733 runs. The memorable moment happened in 2013 when he scored an unbeaten 175 in just 66 balls against the Pune Warriors India.

  1. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma also known as Hitman for his powerful hitting is the first Indian in this list with 20 Man of the Match Awards in the history of IPL. Rohit is one of the successful IPL captains in the history of IPL. Rohit started his journey in the IPL for Deccan Chargers and played in that franchise till the year 2010. But he went on to build his legacy from Mumbai Indians when MI bought him in 2011. In the year 2013, Rohit was appointed as the captain mid season and MI went on to win the IPL for the first time under Rohit’s captaincy. After that MI went to win the IPL titles four times under Rohit’s leadership in 2015, in 2017, in 2019 and in 2020.

  1. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli, the batting maestro of Indian Cricket and RCB is fourth in this list with 19 Man of the Match Awards in the history of IPL. Kohli started as a raw talent for RCB in the inaugural season in 2008. The initial years were not good for him but from the year 2011 his legacy as a player in RCB started to change. Kohli has created a number of records for RCB with his impeccable stroke making, extra-ordinary consistency. Virat is also the leading all-time runs scorer in the IPL with over 7,000 runs with numerous half centuries and centuries. His best season came as a batter in the year 2016 with leading RCB, Kohli scored a stunning 973 runs with four centuries.

  1. David Warner

The Australian left handed opener is fifth in this list with 18 Man of the Match Awards in the history of IPL. Warner started his IPL journey with Delhi Daredevils opening with Virendra Shewag. But during his stint with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Warner had reached the peak of his performance in his IPL career. Warner joined the SRH in the year 2014. He was appointed as the captain of SRH in 2015, and immediately next year in 2016, SRH won its first IPL title under David Warner. In that season, Warner led from the front with 848 runs. He has shown tremendous consistency as a batter and won the Orange Cap thrice in 2015, 2017 and in 2019.

List of Captains with Most Man of the Match Awards in IPL History

In the Indian Premier League where all the matches are very competitive, captains are expected to lead their side by example and then often deliver match winning performances from where the particular captain earns the prestigious Player of the Match awards. These performances highlight their ability to inspire and take their teams to memorable victories. In this list, the captain cool MS Dhoni tops the list with the most player of the match award performances with 17 awards. And the second one is Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma who are tied with 13 man of the match awards. 

Both Gambhir and Rohit led from the front with their respective teams winning multiple titles. Rohit Sharma has guided MI to five IPL Titles whereas Gautam Gambhir has led KKR to two IPL titles. Virat Kohli also leads from the front whenever he captained for RCB with 11 man of the match awards. Despite RCB not winning the title, Virat Kohli’s performance as a captain always stood out the most. 

Also KL Rahul led from the batting with his tremendous batting whenever he has led any franchise. He has in total 9 man of the match awards.  KL Rahul led the Kings XI Punjab for the first time and demonstrated his batting class and led from the front. Other than the Kings XI Punjab, KL has led the Lucknow Super Giants very well too.

List of Indian Players with most Man of the Match Awards in IPL History

When the Indian Premier League started in the year 2008, it gave the platform to the Indian talents to showcase their talents in the biggest league in the world. From the young Rohit Sharma to Virat Kohli, from the finisher MS Dhoni to power hitter Yusuf Pathan, all have performed brilliantly and led from the front and won numerous man of the matches awards. 

Here also Rohit Sharma leads the list with most number of man of the matches with 20 awards. Apart from these three legends, Yusuf Pathan known for his explosive batting has also got 16 man of the matches award playing for Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. 

Then Mr. consistent Suresh Raina played a vital role for Chennai Super Kings which earned him 14 man of the match awards. Apart from these cricketers, Gautam Gambhir always led from the front for Kolkata Knight Riders especially with 13 man of the match awards.
