There were only six wicket-keepers who made a stumping in IPL 2024. Rishabh Pant was the wicket-keeper with the most stumpings in IPL 2024. Back from his horrific accident in 2022, he was a great addition to the Delhi Capitals as a keeper. Pant had five stumpings in IPL 2024. His success came thanks to a potent spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. KL Rahul, Heinrich Klaasen, and Wridhiman Saha made two stumpings each. Rahul played at the Ekana stadium for the most part which assists the spinners. Klaasen and Saha on the other hand played on wickets assisting the fast bowlers more than the spinners but still impressed everyone with two stumpings. Sanju Samson and Dinesh Karthik were the other two keepers to make a stumping each in IPL 2024.
MS Dhoni is the greatest wicket-keeper to ever play in the IPL. Even though the veteran keeper made no stumpings in IPL 2024, there is no doubt about his abilities. Dhoni has the most stumpings in IPL history. The former Indian wicket-keeper has made 42 stumpings. His quick reaction time has allowed him to make stumpings within the blink of an eye. Dhoni has an unorthodox style when compared to other keepers. While the other keepers move their hands backward while collecting the ball, Dhoni moves his hands forward.
Due to his unorthodox style, Dhoni does not practice keeping in the nets.
Talking about his keeping, Dhoni said in an interview in 2018, “I think it’s because of my unorthodox keeping style. Stephen Fleming always says that he has never seen me keep wickets in net sessions in his nine years of IPL coaching. I think a lot of it needs to be done in the mind.” This just shows how his unorthodox technique is superior to other keepers.
Dinesh Karthik ranks second on the list for most stumpings in IPL history. Karthik has been a great keeper in the IPL. He has 37 stumpings in his IPL career. In spite of ageing, Karthik has made revolutions in his T20 game more so in his batting. This allowed Karthik to elongate his career and retire in 2024. His fitness allowed him to have a great stance when keeping to the spinners. He could bend his knees a lot which ensured that he had a low centre of gravity. A low centre of gravity allows wicket-keepers to remain stable and have a great balance. Karthik in spite of being an underrated performer for most of his teams, has made it to many lists of records in IPL.
Robin Uthappa is another experienced wicket-keeper who has made it into the list for most stumpings in IPL history. Uthappa has 32 stumpings next to his name in spite of playing in teams where he was sometimes the second wicket-keeper. He was at Kolkata Knight Riders for two seasons when Karthik was the designated keeper. During the last stages of his IPL career, Uthappa was at Chennai Super Kings where MS Dhoni was the designated keeper. This meant that the wicketkeeping chances for the former IPL player were lesser than most others. His batting often overshadowed his ability to make quick stumping.
Wriddhiman Saha is yet another keeper who like Dinesh Karthik has a lot of stumpings thanks to his fitness abilities. Saha has made 26 stumpings. He has been a great keeper not just in IPL but as well as in international cricket. When he finally got regular chances as a keeper in the test team, Saha showed his incredible abilities, especially in sub-continent regions where spin bowling plays a big role.
The youngest keeper to make it into the list, Rishabh Pant has been a great addition to the list of wicketkeepers in India. Pant in his short career in the IPL has made 23 stumpings. Pant has had the privilege of playing with some of the best Indian spinners during his time at the Delhi Capitals. In just a few seasons he has played with Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin. These spinners in the last few years have been successful in confusing the batters with their flight. With age on his side, Rishabh Pant has a great chance to overtake those in front of him.
MS Dhoni has the most stumpings in IPL by an Indian wicketkeeper. The 43-year-old holds the record with 42 stumpings to his name. Dinesh Karthik is ranked second on the list with 37 stumpings to his name. Former wicket-keeper, Robin Uthappa with 32 stumpings to his name is ranked third. Wridhiman Saha with 26 and the current Indian team keeper, Rishabh Pant with 23 stumpings are ranked fourth and fifth respectively. The list also features other current players like Sanju Samson, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan. These three would certainly want to rise up on the rankings and will be looking to do so in the coming seasons.
Adam Gilchrist holds the record for making the most stumpings in a single season of IPL. Gilchrist in IPL 2009 made eight stumpings. Rishabh Pant follows his idol on the list with six stumpings in 2019. Robin Uthappa in 2017, Brendon McCullum in 2012, Dinesh Karthik, and MS Dhoni in 2010 have also made six stumpings in a single season of the IPL. The list also includes overseas stars Kumar Sangakkara and AB de Villiers who made five stumpings in a single along with some other Indian keepers.
