The last season of Northern Superchargers was a bit up-down. They won 5 out of 8 matches, lost 2 and 1 match was canceled due to rain. The team finished in fourth position but as per the format only top-3 teams made it to the playoffs, so the journey of Superchargers came to an end. But winning their last match against London Spirit at Headingley was a good signal for their confidence. Adil Rashid took 3 wickets in that match and the team won by 21 runs via DLS method.
They are match-winners in both batting and bowling. Matthew Short and Graham Clark gave a solid start to the team by aggressive batting in the powerplay. In bowling, Adil Rashid and Reece Topley did not allow the opposition's top order to handle the opposition. If the Superchargers play in the same rhythm in the 2025 season, then they can again become strong contenders in the playoffs race.
Welsh Fire's 2024 season was disappointing. The team won only 2 matches, lost 4 and rained 2 times spoiled their match. Due to this their confidence was a bit down, and they finished at the 6th position in the points table. Their last played match was against Birmingham Phoenix, in which they had to face defeat by 5 wickets. Kohler-Cadmore played a strong innings of 54 runs, but the team could not defend that score.
In bowling, Haris Rauf and David Willey gave a little fightback, but Moeen Ali's innings turned the game around. Now the team needs a fresh start in the 2025 season. The team has individual talent - like Kohler-Cadmore, Rauf, Phillips - but they will have to show collective performance. If the team makes better decision-making in pressure situations, then it will not be difficult to make a comeback.
The Headingley pitch is quite exciting for T20 cricket. In most matches, this ground is considered to be the best for batting, where 180+ scores are normal. But if there is a change during the match, the fast bowlers create trouble with swing and seam. T20 Blast data between 2022 and 2025 shows that this ground is high-scoring, but the bowlers also remain in the match.
Fast bowlers take wickets but they are a bit expensive. Spinners do not get much help here. On an average, 1.48 wickets fall in the powerplay, 2.4 in the middle overs and 2.5 in the death overs. The team that wins the toss often bowls first because the pitch becomes a little flatter later. The ground is small, the square side is 66m and the straight is 72m, so hitting boundaries becomes easy.
Northern Superchargers and Welsh Fire have clashed 4 times so far, out of which Northern Superchargers have won 1 match and Welsh Fire also 1. The remaining 2 matches were “No Result” due to rain. There have not been many matches between the two teams, but whenever they have happened, they have been quite entertaining. Their 2024 match was also cancelled due to rain before it was to be played, so the rivalry has become even more interesting.
The last full match between the two was played in 2023 at the Headingley ground, in which Harry Brook of Northern Superchargers played an innings of a tremendous 105* runs. But even his brilliant century could not make the team win. Welsh Fire chased the target of 159 in just 90 balls, where Stephen Eskinazi and Jonny Bairstow finished the match with aggressive batting. This match proves that both teams have match-winners and any team can dominate on any day.
