Northern Superchargers Women had a mixed performance last season. The team won 3 out of 8 matches, lost 3, tied 1 and one match ended in a no result. Their last match was against London Spirit in which the batting flopped – captain Hollie Armitage did score 58 runs but the team could only reach 99/7. In bowling, Linsey Smith took 3 wickets but the opposition chased the target easily. The team needs consistency and strong performance from the middle-order.
Welsh Fire Women had a wonderful performance last season and were at the top of the points table. The team won 5 out of 8 matches, lost 2 and 1 had a no result. But in the final, it lost by 4 wickets against the London Spirit. Jess Jonassen played an important innings of 54 runs but the whole team was under pressure. In bowling, Shabnim Ismail gave the fight back by taking 3 wickets but due to small target, the match slipped out of our hands. The team has match-winners, they just need to give them the final touch.
The Pitch at Headingley, Leeds is mostly batting friendly in T20 matches. Scores above 180 are often made here. Batsmen get a lot of help from the ground but if there are clouds in the sky then fast bowlers also do well. When there is cloud cover the ball swings and a wicket can be taken.
Fast bowlers get a little help but spinners struggle. Approximately 1.5 wickets fall in the powerplay, 2.4 in the middle overs and 2.5 wickets fall in the death overs. The team winning the toss likes to bowl because batting becomes easy later on. The square boundaries are 66m and straight 72m, so it gives great shots too.
Northern Superchargers Women and Welsh Fire Women have clashed 5 times so far, in which Superchargers have won 2 and Fire only 1. The remaining 2 matches were "No Result" due to rain, one of which was the eliminator match of 2023 - which was very crucial for both the teams. There is a strong rivalry between these two in the women's tournament, and whenever the match is completed, it remains very close and competitive. Their last completed match at Headingley ground in 2023 was quite amazing. Northern Superchargers scored 144/4 on the back of a brilliant 69* innings by Marie Kelly. After that their bowling unit restricted Welsh Fire to just 128/8. Welsh Fire's start was poor - both openers were out on zero. Laura Harris did score 37 runs, but wickets kept falling and the match went in the favor of Superchargers. This match shows that when the match between these two teams is over, Superchargers has the upper hand - but Welsh Fire can turn the tables anytime.
