The New Zealand team is in tremendous form at the moment. They have won their last 5 T20I matches consecutively and topped the points table of the tri-series. Their batting line-up is consistently scoring runs and the bowling is also keeping the opponents under pressure. In the last match against Zimbabwe they made a strong total of 190 runs in which Tim Seifert scored 75 runs and Rachin Ravindra played a brilliant innings of 63 runs. In bowling Ish Sodhi took 4 wickets and shook the top order of Zimbabwe. They won the match by 60 runs. There is balance in every department and the team will enter the final with full confidence.
South Africa have given a slightly mixed performance in the tri-series. They won 2 out of 4 matches and lost 2 but made it to the final on the basis of net run rate. Some of the players in the team have played well individually but as a team there was lack of consistency. In the last match against New Zealand they scored just 134/8 in which Reeza Hendricks played a fighting knock of 41 runs and George Linde showed a bit of firepower towards the end. But their middle order collapsed. In bowling Senuran Muthusamy took 2 wickets but NZ chased down the total quite easily. If South Africa wants to win the final, they will have to show improvement in every area.
The pitch of Harare Sports Club is balanced for T20 matches. In the beginning, fast bowlers get some help, the ball swings. But as the match progresses, the pitch slows down and spinners get help. If batsmen take some time to play, they can score well.
Batting first is quite useful on this ground. So far 66 T20I matches have been played here, in which the team batting first has won 36 times. The average first innings score is 151. It is difficult to chase a score more than 200 in T20 here. So it is better to win the toss and then bat.
The T20I matches between New Zealand and South Africa have been quite tough. So far, both the teams have faced each other 17 times, in which South Africa has won 11 times while New Zealand has won 6 matches. Although South Africa is ahead in the records, however, in recent form, New Zealand has left them behind.
In the 5th match of the tri-series, New Zealand defeated South Africa by 7 wickets. This was the last time these two fought against each other. Tim Seifert played a match-winning innings of 66* runs and Santner created pressure by taking 2 important wickets. This shows that New Zealand now looks more confident and dominant in these encounters. In the upcoming matches, we will see even more exciting contests between the two.
